Actually no, I wasn't being pedantic, it was a lousy attempt at a joke; would have been funnier thus: 'is an uk some sort of wok', ie: "...slices of potato fried in oil in the uk". Then again, maybe not. Let it lie why don't we! :)

chips = fried potato chunks from a chip shop, ie with fish :)
crisps = very thin wafer like slices of potato fried in oil
