impressive yes. but there are somethings i noticed...one, he bobs his head alot, the shifting of weight is very visible. Also he turns without looking first in the direction hes going. His heel also comes of the ground in stances and positions it shouldn't and the cat stance is used to "create distance without losing ground" he uses it to move foward, as an aggresive move. These things easy to fix but also to do without thinking. Kata is the most important piece of your technical training.
I do not know him, but I understand why he does kata this way. It is by no means a mistake. The visible shifting of weight is purposeful, as well as the "bobbing" of the head up and down. This is different from a beginner mistake because he does it at very purposeful moments, for specific reasons. Think about it, you would never practice jujitsu at one level. Imagine the distance of the fight much closer, and maybe what he is doing will make more sense.
Wow! That was a great performance of Matsubayashi Shorin ryu. You did it very very good. Nice strong and dynamic like the way karate should be. I do shotokan and shito ryu and Ryuei ryu. But my favorite shorin ryu style is, Matsubayashi ryu. Thanks!!
You are a talented martial artist. I'd like to see you demonstrate the kata showing your fighting applications. Not Bunkai, fighting kata. I'm sure it's just as good.
Looks fine to me. Very well done. The same katas can be done fast or slow depending on what the teacher is trying to prove for the application. If you go and watch the original katas being performed by the masters etc they are doing these slowly. Doing them way too fast will cause imperfections in balance, stance and technique. Again as I said, it's the application of the kata.
Funakoshi changed many kata names and kata movements. His kata are original only in part as for showing the reasons behind the movements other than the basic obvious ones they are not meant to be seen no matter how you do them. That is oyu or hi den waza the secret teachings and even a lot of instructors dont know them.
Obviously, this kata is based on Shotokan's Heian Nidan. It is interesting to see another karate style's take on the original Japanese version. The Okinawan version obviously is THE original :)
Its true. I think Master Funakoshi changed "Pinan" to "Heian" to sound more Japanese. Just like he changed the symbol for "Chinese Hand" to "Empty Hand."
Master Funakoshi trained in Shorin Ryu and Shorei Ryu on Okinawa and then simplified and combined the two to create Shotokan. He changed the names of many of the katas to make them seem less foreign to his Japanese students. Pinan was changed to Heian and Wanshu was changed to Empi, as well.
At our dojo , they dont want you to burn thru the kata at light speed, plus if he did most of us couldnt follow the movements, Im trying to use these vids to learn. He did an awesome kata!
This is a poor performance of a modern kata. The movements are slow, with no real understanding of the principles and reasons behind the movements. It is crisp, yes, but slow.
The fast, forceful movements make this guy look very intimidating. Are they used in any kind of sparring, or is it just kata movements? Is there a sport where these techniques are practiced?
My sensei actually demonstrated how this kata is used in sparring last night. This guys movements are very crisp ... it's how the black belts at my dojo practice their kata.
This is the one I have to learn next! I really love these videos because they help me at home... I tend to forget what they taught in class because they go so quickly... so this way I can look, step-by-step! This guy ROCKS, btw!
... wow

FYI ... Shotokan's Heian Nidan is based on the original Okinawan Pinan Shodan.
