Pretty cool- you can see the first shot is a real physical model because it never shows below the feet (Probably where it was held off the ground) and when it switches to CG the pants are a different shape.
Actually, computer animation was in existence at the time. It was simply in its infancy. Not well known. remember the movie Tron? It came out right around this time period as well.
Doesn't mean it's not impressive though! Consider that at the time, direct transfer to video wasn't possible. You had to PHOTOGRAPH each frame of animation direct from the computer screen and then string it together as film! Arguably harder work than traditional cel animation!
@snowboarderjohn Before Computer animation???? wtf ... computer animations took off in the 1970s; arguably in late 60s. Hard to believe how ignorant the POST-Gen X generation is about the 80s.

I think it's the anti-gravity thing (or magnetics) so there would be no exhaust. Mr. Spock says that it's logical.
