no paso nada? who put the rule that u must have swing or "sabor" in your solos? its all about expressing urself based on talent and interpretation. if u want to throw some swing or "sabor" fine, but this is just a tradition, and it doesnt make the player better than the other when really, this instrument has developed so much that improvisations have also changed. i can guarantee u that if he played like this in the 70's, there would be some serious jaw-droppings even amongst the greatest

Perhaps I am wrong in my beginner's assessment, but the slap technique (with the cupped fingers) he uses is usually 'not recommended' by almost any conguero. Is there some special reason he is using it here ? I know slaps can be done faster and cleaner with the right technique ?

Their is more than one type of slap

Muffled slap, closed slap & open slap

Muffled is where you put the other hand down before hitting the drum

Closed is where you cup your hand and hold it on the head

open is where you just let yor hand strike and come off

their is a difference in the tone created

Correct if I'm wrong, but those were Remo congas, yes? Those things have a pretty good sound as far as I could tell. Some people seem to dislike Remo's synthetic heads, regarding them as 'ringy,' but I didn't hear any excess 'ring' or reverberation on Joey's drums.
