  • do you think i could i could skimcoat the wife she has lots of cracks and looking old

  • @hanghoodiescum Well, that's certainly would be a novel approach, if she would stand for it. I think you would have to convince her it is for her own good, but in all honesty I cannot recommend it. Sorry.

  • how is this a DIY video.

  • @adrywallfinisher the video shows some basic tools for doing skim coat. Check out my information and you will be directed to my web page for skim coat instruction.

  • can i skim coat over painted textured walls

  • @powderhound231 Yup, sure can - as long as the painted surface is clean and

free of dirt, grime, grease, cleaning agent residues etc.

  • @powderhound231 fwiw, you can also apply PVA to a painted wall before you skim it. water it down 1:3 (1 part PVA, 3 parts water) and apply 1 coat with a roller. skim once the PVA is tacky. that helps to even out any suction on the walls without killing it completely.

  • Hey have a look here PlasterPerfection looks like a useful site for us plasterers please get posting

  • take off the old coating and do it right

  • They sell 1/4" drywall which is perfect for installing over a rough plastered or old drywall with 100 coats of paint on it.

  • Yes, true. But this also may create issues with

the trim around floors, doors and windows.

In older houses with three-quarters thick trim, this may not be a problem but in newer house with thin trim, then it must be removed and the jambs shimmed out, and then trim reinstalled and painted.

    Quite a lot of hassle.

  • I have a 1903 house and popcorn is not plaster...I thought it was something else...however; I don't have that problem I have another..the paint won't stick to the walls since we had a fire...so should I skim coat and I have redwood lathe and plaster; I have scrapped the walls free of paint and down to plaster...NOW WHAT?????

  • If your walls are now paint free, then you can either repaint or if the plaster is not nice looking,

you can skim coat - then retexture if you want.

It might be be a good idea first to wash down the walls, to remove any dust or remaining smoke residue.

  • And/Or get an Alkyd or Oil based primer. That will definitely help with the seal so your new paint will adhere properly, it will give it "tooth" or "teeth"

  • lol get a plasterer if you need a plastering job done. aint no way a non plasterer or diy-er can plaster a nice shiny flat smooth ceiling or wall

  • I beg to differ. I have clients who do just that, after personal instruction from me or from my

    skim coat manual.

We are talking about using drywall compounds, not plaster.

  • Thanks you so much. I have been trying to find alternatives to rid myself of the ugly popcorn ceiling. Now I have the answer and Now I will do the job myself

  • Just remember, you will need to scrape the popcorn off first. It is not easy to skim popcorn because first, it is so rough, and secondly it tends to come off when made wet - which is what skim coating will do.

  • to make old popcorn look new mix drywall

with water to a slurry about like sour cream then paiint it on with a roller. when dry at least it looks new again.

  • sadly i see there is no website info

  • To find website info, just look to the left of

the video, in the description box. The URL

    to the site is there.

  • Thanks !!...getting reaqdy to remove a popcorn ceiling ...skim coat and then skip trowell texture....not really worried about the asbestos...just going to be reqal careful ..respirator mask...plastic everything off...etc....
