Lastly, the website includes a game that allows you to make your own AKB48 member and name it. The are using the commercial and website to promote the group. Period.

First of all, its just a commercial for a CANDY by Glico and the girls are modeling for it. Secondly, they teamed up with the Candy brand to make a website to promote the group AKB48.
Lastly, the website includes a game that allows you to make your own AKB48 member and name it. The are using the commercial and website to promote the group. Period.

@gngakiau There are actually 60 Members right now. They've been AKB48 when there were only 21 members, and they'll still be AKB48 even if they have 100 members.
48 was basically a meaningless number originally, it had nothing to do with the number of members. And even if it did, from a marketing standpoint it would be ridiculous to raise or lower the number in their name every time a girl either graduated or got promoted.
