Spice and Wolf is an anime that introduces one of its protagonists through fan service. It does not focus on Holo without cloth though. My overall opinion is that it is really good. This trailer does not depict or hint what the plot is about which I like better that way. If you were even the least bit captivated by this trailer or very interested in this trailer then it is highly recommended that you watch it, if not, then it is not recommended that you watch it at this time.

Go to the site mentioned at the end of the video. They have all the first 25 episodes (Season 1 & 2) Season one id dubbed and also has the original Japanese with English subtitles. Season 2 just had the Japanese with English subtitles. If you can bare that whoever...it is still a good watch.

It's just that the novel Volume 3 I think already reaches episode 3 of season 2, and seeing as there are 16 volumes to the novel, it seems like there would be plenty of material to create more seasons, but there's just no information on a new season even being released yet.

Hmm. Uh...hmm. Mixed emotions with this one for me. I adore Spice and Wolf. It's possibly my most favorite anime of all time and I adore Holo, or as the fans prefer to call her Horo, is one of my most favorite anime characters. Personally I feel as though they made her voice a little too deep. Although it's possibly the best they could have found for american stores, it just seems like she lost...something. At the same time I love the English voice and definitely look forward to hearing more.

this is a great anime. its very classy, the voices are spectacular! they are very mature sounding and don't ruin the original. the storyyline is beautiful and very much grown up:) can't wait till season3!
It bugs me that they call her Holo. I know that a lot of people believe that the Japanese always swap their "L" and "R" sounds, but in the original Japanese version they clearly say "Horo." I just know I'm going to hear a lot of people butchering her name now...
But if you read the original spelling of her name, "ほろ" it is spelled Ho"ro". In Japan the american "L" can have an "R" sound. So her name is still pronounced "Horo."
Concerning the spelling of Holo's name, Name in japanese seems to be spoken as "Horo".Yen Press has stated that they "were instructed that the proper spelling of the character's name is indeed Holo" by translation.
Actually, the Japanese confuse Ls and Rs so often because in the Japanese language they are the SAME. There is only one consonant sound for "L" and "R", and really it's more of a trill right between the two for which there is no direct equivalent in the English language. So technically, "Holo" and "Horo" are BOTH correct translations.
But in the end, if you actually listen to the Japanese version, they are pronouncing it with an "R" like sound. For example, when the Japanese pronounce "Belldandy," you can still hear the "R" sound, but it does sound close to an "L."
Say they dubbed "Kara no Kyoukai." I'm sure the fans would be angry if they called Ryougi, Lyougi.
By your logic that would be correct...but they are still changing her name. It may be correct on technicality but the spirit of the name is lost.
Look, do you actually know anything about the Japanese language? They are not pronouncing an "R" sound in the Japanese because THERE IS NO R SOUND IN JAPANESE. There is no "L" sound either. Like I said, there is a trill that resembles and is used in place of both. The sound is more commonly translated to English with an "r" (e.g. Akira, Rei) but it is equally acceptable - albeit unusual - to translate it with an "l" (e.g. Leiji Matsumoto).
When the more uncommon "L" romanization is used, it's generally because the owner/creator of the property/name in question either doesn't know the difference between the two letters or specifically requests that the name be romanized as such (or both). Either way, both are correct - or rather, both are incorrect - because the Japanese equivalent for both letters is a sound that DOES NOT EXIST in the English language.
I know quite a bit about the Japanese language. I've been studying it for quite a while now. However, I won't go into it because I can't prove that as FACT. I never once denied what you said. I just said that there were times when certain english translations are more accurate than others. To be more accurate, if you really want to get into the nitty gritty, it uses a combination of the "L," "R," and "D" mouth positions. That's where the trill comes from.
So if you understand that "Holo" is a legitimate translation, why are you complaining that professional translators who are being paid to do their job and are in contact with the show's original studio "butchered" the name? Sorry, but it all just screams weeabooism to me.

Maybe you should watch the original and then form an opinion then. I also found a forum that discussed the same points we were talking about but went on to explain why an "R" sound would have been better.

Other reasons were given but this seems to stand out.
I'm not discussing the actual quality of the show, merely the translation of a name; therefore, whether I've actually seen the show is unimportant, since that's not the actual topic of discussion.
And that reason doesn't contradict anything I've said, because there's no difference between "Holo" and "Horo" aside from the English pronunciation. They're the same word. Unless the Ainu have a different set of consonants with actual L and R sounds, it's a moot point.
Just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that "Horo" wouldn't have been a more conventional and less awkward translation, but... well, two things. 1) It's still a CORRECT translation, so saying that it "butchers" the name is just plain wrong, and 2) given that the sound is almost always translated as "R", I doubt Funimation's translators would have romanized it this way unless they were under specific instruction from the Japanese studio. Kind of like how "Kaoru" from Evangelion became "Kaworu".
Okay, let's get certain things agreed upon and we can put this whole debate behind us.
1) Both are technically incorrect but both could be considered correct due to the sound not existing in the english language.
2) Translating it as "R" would "probably" be a less awkward translation.
Anything else is fabrication or opinion. Example: While it is true that the correct romanized name is "Holo" on paper that doesn't mean that it couldn't be pronounced "Horo" as well.

I LOOOOOVE Brina's voice for Horo. She's got a sultry devilishly sexy purr mixed with a soft as fur texture of proud regal elegance. I always thought Horo would sound more Dreamy and Proud (like one of Neil Gaimens 'Endless') but Brina gives a wise adventurous & sexy read that just warms your heart and makes horo mezmerizingly addictive to watch.
I really liked the voice work for her, sounded really good. Wasn't the usual annoying high pitched annoying shit I usually see in anime. Gawd I hate that!
I fell in love w/this series after watching the two seasons subbed and eagerly awaiting the Studio in Japan that is behind this to bring out a 3rd season. Sounds like the voices picked out for Dubbing this sound rather interesting choices for it
looks like fanservice, and 0:05 looks so much like elfen lied its kinda funny. im not bashing this or anything, but if the story has a good plot line and interesting characters, like this from what i can tell, why ruin it w/ a shitload of fanservice? save that for titles like 'cherry juice!!' or 'PRINCESS princess p0P!1!1"

Maybe you should watch the original and then form an opinion then. I also found a forum that discussed the same points we were talking about but went on to explain why an "R" sound would have been better.
Here's a bit from the discussion. I could give you a link if you care to look at it yourself.

I'm not discussing the actual quality of the show, merely the translation of a name; therefore, whether I've actually seen the show is unimportant, since that's not the actual topic of discussion.
And that reason doesn't contradict anything I've said, because there's no difference between "Holo" and "Horo" aside from the English pronunciation. They're the same word. Unless the Ainu have a different set of consonants with actual L and R sounds, it's a moot point.

Just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that "Horo" wouldn't have been a more conventional and less awkward translation, but... well, two things. 1) It's still a CORRECT translation, so saying that it "butchers" the name is just plain wrong, and 2) given that the sound is almost always translated as "R", I doubt Funimation's translators would have romanized it this way unless they were under specific instruction from the Japanese studio. Kind of like how "Kaoru" from Evangelion became "Kaworu".

Okay, let's get certain things agreed upon and we can put this whole debate behind us.
1) Both are technically incorrect but both could be considered correct due to the sound not existing in the english language.
2) Translating it as "R" would "probably" be a less awkward translation.
Anything else is fabrication or opinion. Example: While it is true that the correct romanized name is "Holo" on paper that doesn't mean that it couldn't be pronounced "Horo" as well.

Yeah: If it's a correct translation, don't go saying that Funimation "ruined" it. You can just as easily say something like, "If I were in their position, I would've translated it this way," and not look like a total weeaboo.

I'm pretty open minded and I admit my mistakes, but I don't exactly like being belittled, via sarcasm, when I admit those mistakes.
I just admit that my wording was harsh in my original statement, and that I shouldn't let my opinion get in the way of reality. All in all, I think the dub is pretty good.
It still isn't a correct translation. Neither translations are correct. You said so yourself. That is reality. However, the fact that "Holo" is the accepted translation is also reality.

I LOOOOOVE Brina's voice for Horo. She's got a sultry devilishly sexy purr mixed with a soft as fur texture of proud regal elegance. I always thought Horo would sound more Dreamy and Proud (like one of Neil Gaimens 'Endless') but Brina gives a wise adventurous & sexy read that just warms your heart and makes horo mezmerizingly addictive to watch.
I love the scene with the potatoes - very cute.

I fell in love w/this series after watching the two seasons subbed and eagerly awaiting the Studio in Japan that is behind this to bring out a 3rd season. Sounds like the voices picked out for Dubbing this sound rather interesting choices for it

looks like fanservice, and 0:05 looks so much like elfen lied its kinda funny. im not bashing this or anything, but if the story has a good plot line and interesting characters, like this from what i can tell, why ruin it w/ a shitload of fanservice? save that for titles like 'cherry juice!!' or 'PRINCESS princess p0P!1!1"
