According to talking to random npcs in this game, the underwear isn't actually Hell but rather an in between world where all players are judged for their actions by queen jaydes and is either sent to Bonechill's Prison (Hell) or the Overthere (Heaven).
My Mom, a novice gamer, saw me play this stage and asked me what it was I replied, "It's the Underwhere. The land where players go when they get a game over. I should think you should know what this place is better than everyone!"
I bet you the Underwhere is being pretty much full to bursting considering all the baddies such as Goombas Mario is sending there on a daily basis. One day I bet the Underwhere will cause a crack in the ground and all the villains will escape. Then Mario will have a real fight on his hands.
This game may be a Mario platformer but how is that a bad thing? Mario is the platforming king and I found this to be one of the more interesting and fun platforming Mario games. I really would not mind if another Paper Mario was done in this style. It just needs to be more difficult and last longer. Each chapter in a Super Paper Mario 2 should have around 10 subchapters all of which are fairly long and cleverly designed. That was the problem I think. The main quest was too short.
I never really though of it as Purgatory. I still consider Underwhere Road as part of the Underwhere. It is just the outer parts of it. Therefore I still think technically Bowser ended up in Hell. I really did not bring him up in my comment because it actually makes sense he was sent there.
I love how Nintendo makes so many references to the fact that this is a video game, the writing in this game was so great. I often rant about how the first two Paper Marios were way better, but I must say, this game's writing was amazing.
@DeathEaterChic16 dimentio temporarily game overed the four heroes. mario woke up in the fountain room, luigi fell in the river, bowser got captured, and peach wandered around until she found an apple. they were all initially sent to the underwhere tho.

After I killed Dimentio I went through the whole chapter of the underwhere again. He was nowhere to be found. That means...he's still alive! Maybe he'll come back, just like Fawful did.

Apparently they all forgot that the whole reason Dimentio "killed" them all is because the Underwhere was the only place where the Pure Heart could be revived... Luigi was probably just there so Mario could find him, and Bowser is completely justified...
@zimandgir123 What puzzles me is why Peach was in the Overthere. I feel that Dimentio but them in certain areas himself. He put Peach there to lure Mario and his friends to beat Bonechill.
My art teacher, Ms Politi told me to draw somwhere in the world scary, so I drew Underwhere, but when I was explained it to her, she freaked out and thought I was talking about underwear!!!

The movie I do not think was THAT bad. I thought it was really funny. I really do not consider the movie though canon to the games as it seems to be set in an entirely diffirent continuity. That I think is the reason why it is hated. It had nothing to do with the games. They just slapped the characters in a sci-fi action movie and called it Mario. If looked at by itself and not part of the Mario series I find it to be a somewhat entertaining and humerous film.

The plot of the NSMB games seemed very lazily put together. Bowser did not seem intent on conquering the world. He just has his minions kidnap Peach sending Mario on a wild goosechase around the world. That was basically the story of both NSMB games.

That is an interesting concept. But I consider DK Jr. as a protagonist villain and thus being the first and probably only game where you are playing as one of the villains and have to defeat the hero. Mario locked up DK for a reason. He was going around causing all sorts of problems. He was taking DK to the zoo but Jr fouled it up. Fortunately DK is nice now going on his own adventures and both him and Mario seem to be on good terms now.

Yes, Mario should go to the Overthere, but everyone has to go through the Underwhere first. Also, the point is to control one member of the group and save Luigi. If you directly went to the Overthere, Chapter 7-1 would be pointless.

Wow. The fact that The Underwhere was extremely easy to go through and there was a HP replenishing fountain in the beginning, and then the Overthere was confusing and hard to find those damned apples, I'd say the Underwhere was way more heaven-like.

Luigi: Fell into the River Twygz but wandered through it and got lost
Bowser: Mistaken for Bonechill and got captured by a bunch of D-Men

Leave it to Nintendo to actually sneak a trip to Hell in a childish video game and just change the name around to make ti better.

Wow. The fact that The Underwhere was extremely easy to go through and there was a HP replenishing fountain in the beginning, and then the Overthere was confusing and hard to find those damned apples, I'd say the Underwhere was way more heaven-like.
