I don't care what anyone says, for me Paul Simon is the pinnacle of songwriters, there is no one above him, but hey, that's my opinion, everyone else is entitled to theirs :) cheers
Dylan's seminal, as was Lennon, but no one's as literate as Paul Simon, both musically and lyrically, unless you want to proffer Stephen Sondheim, but then S. S.'s in a different genre.
Actually, it's not hard to argue at all. Dylan is Shakespeare and all other singer songwriters will cop to that. Brian Wilson, McCartney, Lennon, Paul Simon, James Taylor. Ask them.
@irishace11 thw way i see it , bob dylan is the greatest song writer and paul simon is the best songwriter, thhe lyyricas that bob writes are mindblowing but paul really polishes his songs to perfection , there arn't many "bad "paul simon songs.
@irishace11 It's hard to argue who's greater then who.. and kind of pointless. But I'd argue that Simon, Dylan, etc. define their generation of American songwriters and all will be remembered as some of the greatest songwriters of their generation. Simon also ended up with some of the most influential albums in press (BoTW, Graceland, Soundtrack to Graduate, etc)
@padraic2001eire Not too shabby, these American Jews! I have the impression Dylan redefined what songs could be more than Paul Simon ever did, though. Take Subterranean Homesick Blues for example. The word 'well-crafted' springs to mind with Paul Simon, much as I adore him.
que canción tan hermosa, me recuerda cuando tenia 10 años, y se parece batante a la musica de los andes del Perú, como el condor pasa, y las virgenes del sol
i'll be seeing paul simon in concert in two months here in austria... i can't say how excited i am... he's been my favorite musician for my whole youth and adulthood... i didn't think that i'd get a chance to see a concert of his. can't wait for it.
I was there on the 5th of Nov (or was it the 4th, My memory is shady thesedays :( ) at the MEN aswell, What an amazing concert - such perfection in the details simply cannot be equalled by any other artist.
Another great thing about Paul Simon songs is that do not just stand the test of time, but they fully stand the test of bad audio too.
Who cares whether the chorus has authentic Peruvian instruments or not? The new instruments do what they should do: they plant in your brain the recollection of the song as it should be. You see the condor flying, don't you? Even in spite of narrow audio bandwidth and the distortion. And every word is where and what is should be. Classic song.
Someone said without the andean instruments like in the original recording this tune is completily different, the piccolo and violin cannot just substitute the "qena and charango" played by Urubamba.
can some write down what paul says at the beginning of the video? I could translate it if I read the sentence but I can't hear what he says. Thank you :)
He said, "This song was from my first solo album. I only mention that because a significant amount of people weren't born at that time. The song is called Duncan. For those of you who weren't born, it won the Nobel Prize in Zurich."
I agree with u guys.this is an awsm song which really never finds any mention anywhere. It's just a lovely piece with a lovely story...but is highly underrated

Gorgeous. He means it.

He's definitely one of the greatest. Him, Dylan, and Springsteen.

Bob Dylan & Paul Simon are both legends.
Trying to put one over another is pointless.

i would say poet as far as word association. but legend works too

Paul Simon is a legend, end of. Art Garfunkel complements that legend too.

He is an exceptional writer.
I love the flutes :]

This song is so beautiful. I think Paul Simon might be the greatest American songwriter of the 20th century, above even Bob Dylan.

@padraic2001eire Yeah i think he's at least as good as Dylan. but IMHO, Springsteen's the best writer. Ever.
