@acbennett17 I was taught by several "Pan Men" when I was 13 years old (I'm 39 now) and have been playing and performing for most of my life. I now teach it to adults and kids alike.
The sticks for steel pans are called mallets and they can be made with wooden dowels or aluminum piping and surgical rubber or deep sea spear rubber for the tips.
Thanks for the comments and interest. Much appreciated.
It was hard when I first started and they pasted the notes for me to find them. It's been sooo many years since then, you just learn where the notes are and there's actually a pattern that's easy to follow once you learn it. That's for the comment
Most excellent. ThanX for the ska bit. I love the steel drums. There's a little reggae store in Oceanside here that has expanded to surrounding buildings and put in a Caribbean market. I wandered in there one afternoon and they had these two dudes just chillin' in the back playing the drums. They let me get on the giant steel barrel drums and my gf get on the steel drums. Super irie. They taught us how to play The Righteous Bros "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."
that's awesome dude, it's an instrument I think a lot more people need to hear and know more about. If you can ever find a way to teach it at Goucher College you should, but until than I do hope the MD. government helps you out :/
btw man, just realized you mentioned in one of your videos that you're in the baltimore area... I go to school down their during the year, right in Towson, we could use some good musical talent down there! haha, keep up the good work and the kick ass videos.
Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate them. I actually teach this instrument to 7th and 8th graders in Takoma Park, MD and would one day want to teach it closer to home. Looking to get some government funding to start a class. Wish me luck! ;-)
another incredible video... great job man, you've really introduced me into how awesome this instrument is since I very rarely get a chance to hear it being played.
reminds me of under the sea, lil mermaid
