This is really useful Dan. But I have a problem. I've been using Famitracker (just messing around with notes, trying to get familiar with this), but for some reason the notes I write won't play back when I click on "play". It's just silent. I was wondering if you know any reason why it may be doing that? I've followed your tutorial to a "T", but... it wont play back the notes on the pattern.
@BipoleMoment Nope. That's kind of the point of chiptunes, the original sound chips could only handle something like 3 sounds at once, so for chords there'd be a very fast arpeggio, hence the trademark blippy-arpeggios in chiptune music.
I was thinking of using Famitracker for making music for stuff, like my own games. Would you guys recommend Famitracker for that, or do you think it's a bit primitive for that?
@jlongenderfer1 they are named after what the sound wave they produce is shaped like.
Squares are usually used for the melody, triangle for bass and noise for drums. However there were many songs written differently in official NES games
Thank you SO MUCH. I really appreciate it! I'm a professional musician, and a longtime NES fan...FamiTracker is by far the most realistic way to produce authentic-sounding NES music...but it's far from intuitive for somebody who's used to working with conventional sequencing/recording software! Your tutorials are a Godsend. Thanks again!
@za909 if you look at the help file it shows you what keys a re mapped to what note. I only found it cuz i was trying to work out to work the crazy program
Since I am using just my ascii keyboard to map my notes, is there a way to set the default octaves lower? For example, the letter Z maps to c note octave 3. I want z to be my lowest c possible. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
@wulfsburg65 I only just started using the program, but I was wondering this too, so I did some looking in the help files. To change the octave up or down, press the / and * keys on your num pad.
/ will drop the octave and * will raise it. Hope that helped. :P
@wulfsburg65 Highlight the note(s) that you want and press CTRL+F1 to lower by a note CTRL+F2 to raise a note CTRL+F3 to lower an octave CTRL+F4 to raise an octave
@thegoddescomposer This is not like GXSCC, so don't expect using Famitracker to be so easy. Learning to use the program requires dedication and desire to write actual 8-bit music, but the results are far superior over anything a MIDI conversion program could produce.
Thanks for uploading,! I was finding it a little awkward navigating my way around the program until I saw this!
Do you happen to know if Nintendo would have actually programmed the cartridges in a similar fashion to Famitracker? Can't seem to find any information about what sort of equipment they used to program the music/ games!
There's something I'm wondering... What do the purple colored numbers and letters do? I see those a lot next to notes. They're in between the note and the effects section. I wanna learn to use 'em, but no where tells me. x_x
If only they had a program like mario paint with real and more instruments, change of style, and change of volume for each not............ I wish someone would make one for me :-(
@pacack825 There are lots of programs out there that are like that, e.g. Reason, Fruity Loops, etc., but they're rather expensive and incredibly complicated. It would be nice if they had some simpler freeware out there.....
Awsome tutorials! Ive always had a pretty good mind for music, but not so much with computers. Therefore, using your tutorials of awesomeness, I've been able to make some pretty good stuff. Now: Is there a way to take a FamiTracker file and convert it to mp3, so i can send my creations to my friends, put them on my iPod, etc? If so, please explain! Thank you.
Thank you so very much! I have been writing my own acoustic music, and I've been trying to think about adding something new to my style. This will definetely spice up my music! These tutorials are simply amazing! They're very clear and easy to understand. - Cody
Extremely helpful... I'm actually trying to cover metal songs with the Famitracker, so it will probably prove to be a lot more difficult than something already created in chiptunes like a retro videogame track. Happen to know which module the original NES used? Trying to keep it to the 8-bit limit, but i'm not completely sure if I'll be able to... the song i'm attempting is Brother Von Doom - The Ravenous. I'd love to hear a cover of yours so I can hear what it SHOULD sound like :P
Not sure what the expansion chip or the ability to switch songs does. So if I have song 1 and song 2, will that overlap them when I play it? Or is it more of a on-the-fly switch from one to another? I'm not really seeing the point of it I guess. :P
@hintofclover Expansion chips give you more channels to work with, they were designed and used in the Famicom over in Japan for a few games. Also, you can have more than one song on an FTM, without having to open a different file each time you want to write or play a new song.
I try to play this file I put into famitracker but no sound comes out.

@Omatusano yeah, famitracker has support for .wav exporting, and you can basically convert that to .mp3 with audacity to save disk space
