@nusdorfer just like they did to Brian Jones. The contributions that Mick Taylor brought to the Rolling Stones are ten fold. He brought so much. I once read an interview with him, He said "being on stage with the Rolling Stones seemed feel like 3-4 hours, where playing with other bands, time would fly." Truly doesn't get enough credit as a writer or as a Rolling Stone.
@lennonrevolver If you had read what i said, i said it was recorded live in a studio, ie, they sat down, the in studio, played through the stuff and recorded it is they went. This, by definitition, makes it live.
@lennonrevolver Yep, there's a distinct lack of visible piano in the clip, though piano is the most prominent instrument in the mix. Someone else isn't being given due credit here as well.
Wasn't Taylor a beautiful boy?! (And that's a quote from Jagger!) Taylor was without question the best lead guitarist the Stones ever had.. but would also credit his performing with Keith as the most satisfying, too. Fortune smiled on the Rolling Stones-- every single bandmate (including the non credited ones: Ian, Darryl, Lisa, and Bernard)-- all of them are first rate musicians.
@ed3432 you are a first rate idiot. YOU obviously are well in over your head and know nothing about singing. A true artist is not suppose to move or impress you.......a true artist/talent will move themselves and as a result move the listener as well. Go play with your sugar pop crap and leave Sister Morphine and Chimes of Freedom in peace. I will not respond to any reply from an idiot such as yourself..........I have better things to do. I just could not believe what I saw in your post .
Wow - never saw much live footage of Mick Taylor, only still shots and I knew he was lovely, but HOW!!! He's very sweet. Never saw the Stones in concert although I was a kid when he was with them. He has a sensitivity and tenderness about him that comes across in the images ... Thanks for posting.
@Roscoe1144 I don't know what sort of shape Ron Wood is in these days. He has had sobriety issues, not sure if that means alcohol abuse or what, but maybe Mick Taylor could be a viable replacement if Woody can't do it anymore. I'd go see them on tour if Mick Taylor were back in the band.
THE definitive live Stones film is "Ladies and Gentlemen..." from the '72 US tour...musically and technically at their peak and Mick Taylor is on fire...most of the film is viewable on Youtube in snipets...haven't ever been able to find a decent copy of the whole film... Any references?
I've not been forunate enough to see them live (only being 17) and they rarely play in Ireland. But having seen their performance on 'Shine a Light', and other live footage, i personally think they are the best live band ever. And listen to their Forty LIcks cd. Thats all recorded live. Masterpiece.
Stones rule...but Shine a Light is garbage. Do yourself a favor, get a copy of Let's Spend the Night Together or Rock and Roll Circus. Both are much better representations of their majesty.
I love the Stones too. But, Shine a Light is not too spectacular. Forty Licks is not "all recorded live." These comments are a bit odd. I know I am sounding like a begrudger as the Irish would say. The Stones kick ass despite odd fans. Tiochfaidh ar la. Rent Gimme Shelter or Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones. They blow away Shine a Light.
When i say 'live', i mean recorded live in a studio, ie they just sat down together and blasted the pieces out as a band, rather than the individual track recording and overdubbing.
But i shall have a look at the dvds you suggested, if they're anywhere near as good as everyone says, i will be exceptionally happy!
When i say 'live', i mean recorded live in a studio, ie they just sat down together and blasted the pieces out as a band, rather than the individual track recording and overdubbing.
It's not true that Stones are not as good live, in fact, they are a great live band. Much better than the Beatles for instance, who admitted themselves they are not as good live.
I would agree with limunan, Mick Taylor sounds better on the live version than the version done in the Studio. Still think he makes really sweet sounds, whether it be in studio or live.
Whether they are the greatest band in history is a matter of taste. Good studio albums, brilliant songwriting by Jagger/ Richards, but live? rubbish, Keef just hasnt got the musical ability for lead guitar. Jagger is increasingly a parody of hinself, his stage posturing is becoming laughable. Better that they stick to the studio than continue to make geriatric spectacles of themselves. Live rock is a young mans game, sad to see them unable to face up to that.
There is no precedence for how rock icons should age. The fact that they're in their 60's and they can still rock is fine with me, and I'm not alone. Hundreds of millions of other fans agree. They're also not the only rock stars to be continuing to play well now that they're in their 60's - both studio and live.
Just a couple more points. I prefer Led Zeppelin, but it's not even the same genre of rock. Zep is hard rock, Stones are blues rock. In their genre, the Stones are the best, and the best by a huge margin. You can't argue that. So don't bother.
Live rock isn't a young man's game. It's a "whoever can do it well" game. I've seen guys in their 40s and 50s blow away 18 year old guys on stage. There hasn't been a band as good as the Stones, Beatles and Zeppelin since the 70's.
well said.....music is music and music has no age.
It is in the air, in the souls, in the water, in the atoms, in the universe...eh people stop and think..where it comes from?..notes that we put one after one and you can cry or smile..it is a mistery like our life, there is no music for young or old, music is not coming from the brain or from the heart..music is a part of the ALL
It's exactly the opposite. Yes the albums are good and the songwriting brilliant, obviously. But the ace in the sleeve with this band is the show. They are the world's greatest rock band AND best performers in history. There's nothing wrong with Keith's lead and there's no one to come even close. It's not about musical ability or mastering an istrument like a god. It's about the heart he puts in it and the charisma he has built in. "Young mans game" says who? Stones have more energy than anyone.
This is from Don Kirschner's rock concert. There's another take of this with Mick Taylor on piano and Mick Jagger in a different (fruity) costume. Looks like the vocals are the only thing live here.
I think this song was an emotional retort to "Let It Be" however the muse with Jagger is a lover, not his mother, as was the case with Paul, yet same emotional pitch to the songs.
Yeah, this is a complete farce. Charlie isnt even touching the drums, and mick just looks on awkwardly, as he has nothing to play. Bill just looks like he'd rather be chasing after the nearest girl with a mother who is 20 years his junior.
But yet somehow I still love the stones. Just not this meaningless pish.

The stooges holding the instruments aren't even playing! It's the same music off the record -except they're using some different vocals is all.

And the guitar playing is as phony as a 3-dollar bill.
