I can understand why a lot of people are upset about his answer. It's just a matter of fact that English has become THE universal language and a minister of foreign affairs should be able to speak it. BUT in a certain way I understand his reaction (and I want to point out that I neither like nor dislike him). Even if most YOUNG people nowadays learn and use the English language, that is still no reason for a BBC reporter who was sent to Germany not to bother asking in German.

Man merkt schon sehr dass er um jedes Wort ringen muss. Zumindest wie die Satzstellung sind. Ich hatte in meinem ehem. Betrieb Deutsche Kollegen die besser und flüssiger englisch sprechen konnten. Als evtl. Außenminister bräuchte er definitiv mehr Übung. Und das war keine Disserei sondern Tatsache (an alle gerichtet die Westerwelle Fan sind) :-P
