  • This is what we can learn! Learn english before you speak to the world!

  • Given I've heard a few politicians whose first language was English speaking little better, there may be other things criticize about him, but I wouldn't ridicule his English speaking (well, not unless I heard him try to say squirrel).

  • If you can understand what he's saying then I don't see the problem.

  • english is worldlanguage. the highpaid foreigminister has to speak it perfect. otherwise a job in a factory would be better.

  • I am american and I love the german language! I have been studying it for 3 years and it will be my 3rd language and many more to come hopefully!

And I agree with the above comment, he is GERMAN...as long as he knows GERMAN isn't that all that matters ?

  • die olle schwulette

  • so what? Why should everybody know how to speak english correctly. I bet that 99 % of this fags who wrote some ugly comments about this German dude doesn't even know where Germany is. World isn't spinning around America, world is spinning around everyone. Plus if anyone here knows how to translate his speech into german let me know ( that one must be american) and we will see how "good" you speak german

  • @MetalKingLuka I bet that 99% who wrote those ugly comments are germans and of course they do know where germany is. The problem with this guy is that he is an arrogant prick. He is the party leader of the FDP whose main aims are to make rich people richer and poor people poorer i.e. the first thing he has initiated after he won the election was tax cuts for hoteliers, so that his husband (a hotelier) can make more profit..furthermore he described people who are dependent on welfare as decadent

  • @Pastilhas123 not putting down people on welfare, but the sad thing ist many people in the lower escholahns(kannt spell that word^^) do tend to not rise or try, not blaming i do sympathize with poorer people but many also dont take advantage of opportunities, there are unfortunately many homeless people who are into drugs and any help theh atain ist used for furthering that purpose, so its not fair to put them down but it ist fair to expekt them to rise with the given opportunitys

  • Sorry, my english friends....he is just a sissy, vote from a lot of sissy`s. we work on IT.

  • sorry to the world for this stupid bastard.

  • @fairgehtauch Why would you be sorry?? Because he don't speak English perfectly?? Don't be ignorant, you think that Britain's foreing affairs minister knows German???

  • @fairgehtauch That's funny!

  • " Hello, my name is Guido Westerwave...you can say "you" to me!"

  • Its actually really good, the accent makes him sexier

  • I've heard worse - he's not fluent, but so what? At least he made the effort to try and answer in English....

  • English children are made to speak French at school and if good enough(?) are allowed to take German. This is why language skills are so poor. German should be taught first as English is far more closer to the German and Nordic languages.

I pissed off that 30 years later, I'm now learning German when our schools and bookshops have completely turned their backs on languages. WH Smiths and Waterstone are like Poundland.

I can only find polish teachers of German, who are both excellent and a re

  • He wasn't that bad.

  • Where's your problem? I can understand him perfectly fine... Listen to how Russians or Chinese speak English... Partially this is absolute crap compared to Gaydo's skills.

  • people who make fun of others' language skills, are those who only speak their native English and they never tried to learn a language themselves. They just speak their native language and when they listen to foreigners they think "but why can't he speak like I do, it is so easy". Idiiots

  • His English is fine and it is his right to speak German in Germany.

So what?

  • Most of us are able to speak english much better then this fruit!!! And he represents GERMANY...

The rest of the world can say now: DIE SCHWUCHTEL IST DA!

Hahaha, economy is the dynamic of the society... Very well spoken Mister President, Sir!!!

  • About dynamic and THE AUFSCHWUNG hahahah wie geil ist das den last uns gleich alle englisch hier sprechen dann müssen die türken auch noch englisch lernen wie der rest der 88% der deutschen die es nicht verstehen! :)

  • This stupid fucked up idiot wants to be our foreign minister? Not representing me!!!!

  • I agree we British are so lazy, but ready to pick at another fault. Go to Germany and learn to speak german.

  • He speaks English quite well, if a bit hesitantly. Can you imagine a British politician attempting this respose in German?

Give the guy a break. Angela Merkel speaks no English at all.

  • @haggisman1971 "Angela Merkel speaks no English at all"? Her mother was an english teacher, Merkel speaks English nearly perfect.

  • @iwik3to16 Really? I've never heard Merkel speak English.

  • @haggisman1971 Your problem. Check Wikipedia.

  • @iwik3to16 Maybe she does speak English. But there was no reason for Westerwelle to use English at a press conference in Germany. I'm surprised the Germans didn't applaud him for sticking to his guns.

  • @haggisman1971 I agree totally with you. 100%!

  • Guidos English is too poor to get a job in business in Germany today.

This just about disqualifies him from his job a s foreign minister.

And all that aside, hes also been quite rude to reporters.

  • Im from Germany and I hate this bitch...

    He's a gaylord...-.-

    FUCK WESTERWELLE

  • I can understand why a lot of people are upset about his answer. It's just a matter of fact that English has become THE universal language and a minister of foreign affairs should be able to speak it. BUT in a certain way I understand his reaction (and I want to point out that I neither like nor dislike him). Even if most YOUNG people nowadays learn and use the English language, that is still no reason for a BBC reporter who was sent to Germany not to bother asking in German.

  • the thing is: Every average student here in Germany speaks better than this guy, it's the only thing he would have to know and he doesn't! Nobody would be hired for an international position with those language skills! A student talking like this in 9th grade would probably get a C here in Germany. Lately Westerwelle doesn't even try - he simply refuses to answer English questions, that is pure ignorance and totally embarassing for us - btw, still didn't get the point of what he is trying to say

  • Ah.. thats not that bad at all. Its not easy to speak off the cuff on difficult topics fro 2.30mins.

Not sure Hillary Clinton, Gordon Brown or many other English speaking leader could do that in German, French or anything else.

  • LOL!

  • Sorry, but I don't understand, where the problem is. Why should a minister of foreign affairs know how to speak english? On diplomatic missions, he will allways have an interpreter by his side, and I think, it's very courageous, trying to speak english in a press conference, especialy if you obviously just know what you learned in school about it.

  • @Tyrrrrr its not that he cant speak english, but how he is doing his job.

in germany he is one of the most hated politicians, because he allways talks big, without saying anything.

he is also a big capitalist and a dumbass.

  • @Tyrrrrr Because English is the world's lingua franca, if he doesn't know how to speak communicable English he should have a translator.

  • @JohnRhysMusician

It is usual to send a journalist to a press conference who's able to speak the language of the country where the conference is. So it is not Westerwelle who had to provide the translator...

  • @Tyrrrrr Again, English is the world's official diplomatic Lingua Franca. If discussing foreign affairs, it is perfectly legitimate to ask that the diplomat address the question in English, otherwise have a translator.

  • @JohnRhysMusician according to the description "This video was recorded before Westerwelle became Foreign Minister." So I think you can't argue with foreign affairs....

  • @Tyrrrrr There is another video I commented on when Westerwelle was asked by a BBC reporter to answer in English, and he refused.

  • @JohnRhysMusician Yes, that was because he answered the same question from a german reporter some minutes ago, but he offered the BBC guy to talk about it after the conference.

  • @Tyrrrrr you sir are more intelligent than most ^^

  • Line 1 correction: "doesn't even KNOW what ..."

  • @1:58 Man, I wish I could hit him hard for that sh*t! He doesn't even what he's talkin' about - damn loser. Don't wanna know what the future is goin' to look like if this dork moves on with his crap. And (Angela) Merkel still keeps her mouth shut ...

  • Actually some british know to speak german pretty well. I was impressed by myself untill I ve learnt on how close the british and the german people are connected to each other, especially the royal societies but also common people.

The British and the German got more in common than mainstream always wants to make us believe....hey...car racing, football and beer!!! No further explanation needed I guess^^

I like english language as I like the german and others. Quantity makes world colorful!

  • westerwelle is a shame. sorry to the world!

  • Excellent, very well spoken...it's clear it's not his first language but do we hear an english or even an american politician speaking another language so well?

  • The header does not match the video. His english is bad, but I expected a lot worse. Ever hear an englishman speaking German? Do any politicians speak German / French? I am nutural in this discussion, I am Dutch.

    Pieter

  • why would an Englishman speak German? English is the biggest international language and all politicians, since they have nothing much else to learn, should learn ENGLISH!!, you dummy!

  • Ok, but can Englishmen speak any foreign language? They don't even try, so I don't really know who are the dummies in this case. This guy is not perfect, but he is doing his best, I don't see that in the US or UK.

  • rofl u really think its english?u have never been in asia oder south america! .. fuck ur english. it wont help u there. just 1/5 of the people in the world think english is the most important language.( north america, europa and a part of africa)

but i guess ur right englishman are to dumb to learn a different language. with the economy of usa and uk english wont be important in the future any more.. since there are languages which are more useful and easier to learn

  • @tschubidi

It's ridiculous, trust me. I was an English teacher for years, he's pretty hopeless. Neither fluent nor accurate.

  • everybody who claims to be able to talk english in germany speaks more or less like. It's not like you don't understand what he's saying.

  • for an almost 50 year old human being who has his eye on international diplomacy, this is pretty rubbish. i can understand what he's saying mainly because it is being said in the language i would expect from any other 15 year old who only plans to pass abitur. given the circumstances in which this guy is supposed to be speaking, his english is ridiculous. it's perfect if he wants to get a 2,5 on his essay on Fahrenheit 451.

  • @prinzessinhans

I agree to your statements concerning his English skills.

I doubt that comparable skills would enable anyone in Germany to pass Abitur (GUEQ). It is kind of weird how you are trying to embed his performance to Fahrenheit 451, as we are talking a dystopia. "Montag had done nothing, his hands had done it all..." Watch W's hands...

And imagine some Clarisse who might encounter W.... Worthless, don't you think so?

As to 2.5: points, not the mark, right?

  • Well if he were 15 he'd still have a couple of years to bring it up to speed ;)

  • @prinzessinhans

I cannot help but grin. I like your sense of humour... ;-)

  • Das wird er aber nict brauchen. 'Deutschland hier. Sonst mache Schnecke, Deutschland hier, 'ey.

    Peinlich, ey. Voll Außenminister.

  • Was will eigentlich so ein schaumschlagender Propagandist als Außenminister?

  • everyone who meets westerwelle should through acid in his ugly face and kick his silly ass.

  • Hey Albert.

  • Comment removed

  • what the fuck you'll talkin bout???

  • Waht kind of english sentence is this supposed to be?

P.S.: Ich glaub hier sind 95% deutsch

  • Cockroach BBC

    Cockroach BBC

    Cockroach BBC

    Cockroach BBC

    --

BBC is called Cockroach BBC because England is called Cockroach England.

All english men are called Shakespeare cockroaches & English women as Thatcher cockroaches.

Cockroach BBC should have sent a correspondent with German speaking skills. Cockroach BBC must know that in Germany everybody speaks German.

    Nobody speaks English here.

  • Ok, I'm an American who can speak German, and I have to say, based on this video, Westerwelle's English is good enough that he could have answered that British reporter in English, instead of being a total ass, but either way, it only makes him look bad. And yes, fichbar is a stupid twat who is sadly representative of too many Americans and their idiocy and lack of culture.

  • wtf I'm sure you haven't lived in Germany long enough to determine that..

  • @bhavens

Have you ever been to a football match in Dresden? I wouldn't think of those Germans as "educated and cultured". As an American myself I have to say people like you disgust me. You repeat these tired cliches in order to make yourself feel more "international".

  • @ fichbar its loser not looser you fooool (I hope I spelled[spelt like you say]^^ it right if not sorrry. and its not there a joke instead of they're a joke. you're really a joke fichbar^^ anyway...

  • oh Gott, wie der sein Gesicht aufstützt ! And all he is talking about is that gays are now accepted in Politics. "social dynamics"

How in the world could Germany chose such an inadequate representative ?

  • It's like saying Ridiculous German Skills of the UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Milliband...

  • aladin, English is the lingua franca, the language spoken in international gatherings.

    You know that, right ?

  • There is nothing wrong with his English, it's a bit stilted but it is accurate.

  • @gary06uk

It's acceptable for most Germans. But it's far away from the level a German company would consider as "business fluent" in case this would be a job interview

  • you´re a dumbass.. we´re living in the year 2009.. the nazis were active for more than 64years..

  • Even if im not proud of it but there was a time, when the whole Worl was afraid of those "pussys". Westerwelle is i.m.h.o. a real Pussy and is definitly not my first choice to represant Germany in foreign Countrys.

Did you ever thought about the Question: "What made Hitler such an Asshole?" He thougt that the World was full of "Fucking Loosers" and that he acted like he would own the place.

  • Funny sociopath. You talk about war? We were even completely out of mind to fight against three fronts in the 2nd world war and your lovely country, which is very ashamed that you're one of it, got it's raise by forced black slaves and slaughtering the natives. And the cold war is over as well as "loser" spelled with one "o". Nobody takes you serious you dern american teen. You're like the Chinese. Lots of fools, can't stand against german men one to one. You're that Pussy! Regards from Germany

  • fichbar - I live in Montana. Come and get me if you dare, you foulmouth.

  • LOL Only thing loose is your muslimfucked wife, she told me. xD

  • Congrats fichbar, you are the living proof of the deficiencies regarding the US educational system. Dumb, aggressive, left behind and narrow minded, but always ready to insult other nations. And as it seems that this is the only language you're capable of:

Me as an 6 ft 3 german would beat you up in no time, you decadent loudmouth.

  • Schlecht Englisch

  • Bad German!

  • yaaaaaaa! das hat unser land gebraucht!

  • Ladies and Gentlemen,

please welcome the german Sarah Palin.

  • my good POOR ENGLISH...how come he became German Minister Foreign Affairs???

  • He didn`t. Well, not yet ^^ and lets pray he`ll never be :)

For me (as a german) its really embarrassing!

  • The Aufschwung ist da.....Booooaaaahhh!!

ps got to admit its gettin betta... how do u like it? ;*

  • Was daran schlecht ist? Das is ja schlimmer als meine alte Englischlehrerin -.-
