  • "Tar Baby," like many phrases, can be offensively. In this case, it was not. Stupid.

  • would u rather be in africa dieing of aids or in america where aids only infests the fags honestly people need to quit pointing their fuking fingers around cuz theres some pointing right back

  • Some individuals always look for racist things that are just not there. But I think for those people who have spent there lives getting called "tar babies" the word is a hot button. They need to get over it and quit thinking there is a racist around every corner.

  • Its meant as a sticky situation, i dont think he meant it in a racist term, but as a figure in politics, mccain probably still should've been careful in choosing a term, because some people may find racist somehow

  • For you ignorant morons - from the dictionary:

    tar baby

    -noun

a situation, problem, or the like, that is almost impossible to solve or to break away from.

    Origin:

after the tar doll used to trap Brer Rabbit in an Uncle Remus story (1881) of Joel Chandler Harris

    -

Quit looking for racist shit where it doesn't exist. Morons.

  • @dyinman I agree with you. Shit like this has to stop, people are so ignorant these days!

  • I find the word and many other word to be dehumanizing. For someone that is running for a position like president you would think is vocabulary would be a bit more broad. And as an African American I am not looking for sympathy I want respect.

  • For you ignorant people who do not have an education tar baby in any context is offensive. If black went around talking about you crackers or you fag bags or anything that is offensive people would have so many questions as to what context the phrase is meant.

  • @msjnoble

Just because you are offended at a completely non-racist word doesn't suddenly make it racist slang. It's not racist, and it never has been. It means a sticky situation that's hard to get out of. What, should it be called molasses baby instead? Give me a break. Making the use of this word racists only perpetuates the actual racism problems we SOMETIMES run into today.

Sorry they don't make a white tar. Sheesh.

  • its not racist. its means any sticky situation that is made stickier by trying to fight it. its like a quicksand analogy, that the more you struggle the faster you sink or the more you get stuck to the tar baby in this case.

  • B'rer McFox.

  • We're currently dealing with this same situation in Canada where an MP used the term in the House of Parliament in the same context. People need to fucking get over it already. Politicians at their finest--never dealing with issues, just trying to score points.

  • pretty good sure as your born!!!

  • eeeww!!

that chick at the end, Candy Crowley, is soooooo ugly!!!

  • if anyone that is too young to know what he meant, they need to watch what happens when you start punching the tar baby.then you might get it

  • Well said. A tar baby is a situation that just gets worse, and the term didn't start with Uncle Remus--that legend's been around in various forms for hundreds of years. It's like saying the term "white noise" is racist against caucasians. One has nothing to do with the other, except in the minds of people looking for it.

  • "in the minds of people looking for it" Al Sharpton AKA PILE OF SHIT comes to mind. Why did McCain feel he needed to apologize for something that he didnt do?That is the problem...blacks want whites to walk around feeling guilty about nothing....slavery was a long time ago, get the fuck over it....it was their own African people who sold them into slavery anyway so why dont they go to Africa and ask for sympathy!!

  • "Why did McCain feel he needed to apologize for something that he didnt do"

Do you mean he didn't need to apologize for saying "tar baby"?

Which he clearly did say; so what didn't he do?

No one wants you fucktards to full guilty.

It's YOU who keeps assuming that.

  • shitt!! Whateva

  • I dont think he meant it as a racist comment.

  • racist mutherfucker

  • Not too bright are you?!

  • LMFAO!!

  • Scarface was right about this FAGG.

  • I am sick of this racisim crap! When will we all be Americans? The phrase was not used as a racist remark. However, during his campaign a lot of ugly raciest things were allowed to be said. Especially from his stupid running mate.

  • the tar baby was a disney song in the 40s and the story of br'er rabbit goes back alot farther than that. the tar baby was a decoy made of tar to trap the rabbit...a sticky trap...a sticky situation...racist? he wasnt referring to blacks...or even a person for that matter. to say that what he said is racist proves to me that most of you are stupid.

  • dats not the only thing he said. he made more racist comments if u did the research u'll kno or read the media. duh dummy!!!!!

  • first of all, that IS all he said in this video stupid. second, a word of advice...before you go spouting of, reread what you typed and how you typed it. you made yourself look like a fucking retard lol. please reply, i could use a good laugh.

  • it may fuckin mean something in a disney song or a sticky trap, but now n days it does refer to black people. ur definitely not black dats y u dont kno. he may not say all da racist words in one video, but he definitely did other times.

  • im not saying that tarbaby isnt a derogatory (that means bad) name for black people...what im saying is that it also has another meaning. it makes more sense to me that he said "thats a tarbaby of enormous proportions" meaning 'thats a huge sticky situation' as opposed to 'thats a big ole nigger of a problem'...i mean really, did your mother smoke crack while she was pregnant with you? its stupids like you that keep the ball rolling...always playing the race card out of turn...you fail at life.

  • wat da fuck is wrong wit u. now u like talking shit. first of all dont bein talkin abt my momma. i didnt talk shit abt ur momma so dont even go there homie. ur fuckin ass need to get a fuckin life n grow da fuck up. ur a immature mutha fucker. yeh rite i fail in life ur da one dat cant grow da fuck n keep dis shit goin. so i dont kno who da one dat cant get a fuckin life.

  • there is absolutely nothing wrong with me...and ill say what i damn well please. you started with me by calling me a dummy, and that in turn opened you up for whatever i feel like throwing at you. the reason you are in such a bad mood is because you see now that what i said adout the tarbaby comment makes sense and you dont know how to deal with being wrong...dont worry, judging by the way you type its to be expected. Hukt awn Fonix wurkt fer mee!

  • lmao.

im reading ur comments and they are making my day. it is ignorant people in todays society holding us back...and this dude doesn't even know what he is talking about, oh and by the way, growing up is when you stop using 'ebonics' and speek real english...

  • lol (that means bad)

  • fuck mccain!!!!! he's a racist mutha fucker. wen someone confronts him, all he does is dat he's sorry n will no longer use the words. he's doing all dis apologies cuz he's running for president just to get into da white house n become a president. there's no way he would will get dat far cuz of wat he says to different ethnicities.

  • wow first of all i'm black and i'd like to speak for the rest of us and ask you not to defend us ever again people like you make us look like we havent moved forward i dont think mccain meant it in a racist fashion but thats beside the point you really dont have the intellectual capacity to render a plausible arguement on either side

  • Well you can't speak on behalf of African American. Tar baby might of meant something else a long time ago but just like the word fag or gay, it is now a racial put down.

  • Oh yeah...It was an honest mistake, just an honest mistake made by a racist white-devil muthafucka in bed with the Illuminati...WAKE THE FUCK UP...2012 AD...

  • Dude...shut the hell up. You're a retarded, waste of a brain.

  • lol

    2012

the bible says that no one can predict the end of the world and it will be without warning

so all this 2012 stuff is complete BS

  • ASSUMING the bible is true.

  • assuming bunnies can actually kill?

whats wrong with you...do u celebrate christmas?

  • Christmas now is a hallmark holiday celebrated only by toy companies who's prices suddenly rise during that season.

I celebrate family, friends, and love during "Christmas". But hey, we all have our different views. What world would it be if EVERYONE believed in Jesus. No diversity. no fun :-P

    And bunnies can totally kill

OH YEAH!!!!!!! there is a new theory of when the world will end every time one theory's date passes.

  • The bunnies can kill with its diseases and just ask Brer bear and fox ,"Brer rabbit was a killer." He was also a spoiled brat. He beats up things on the road and assumes everything he meets can talk. He is a dumb bunny. I hope gets plague that affects only rabbits and gets mange.

  • Oh my god...he totally meant "this is a big ol' nigger of a problem..."...That is hilarious...He's being portrayed as some beacon of morality while he says shit like this and even went on record saying he'd NEVER TRUST THE GOOKS...His words, not mine...RON PAUL in '08!...Sadly i'll prolly choose the lesser of two evils-OBAMA

  • dam racist asshole.... he is so terrible...

  • What logical reason would he have to say that word?

McCain hasn't been living in a bubble for his whole life, he knows that is a racist term to be using. Would it be any different if he said "we are getting into a n!gger of enormous proportions"??? Tar-baby is a lesser used but still as hurtful phrase used to describe black people by racist whites. Why would he let this out of his mouth and then pretend he didn't mean anything by it? Not an honest mistake if you ask me.

  • I have to agree with you here. Even if he didn't mean it directly to blacks, he used the meaning of the term as a metaphor. The foundations of that word still have racial meanings. His usage of the word may have sub-conscious, but it still implies that the meaning of that term resignates home to McCain's thinking. Poor old man!

  • If there is a non-racist use of that word, most people don't know it! Therefore there was no logical reason for him to use THAT as a metaphor. I am sure he could have used something more conventional that would have made sense to the majority of America, and that would have been non-offensive. "We could be getting ourselves in a sticky situation of enormous proportions". that would not have offended anybody.

  • Spoken by a man/woman of great common sense! You're right. Again!

  • Well I'm not trying to defend but he does come from a very old school mentality. So I guess that due to his senile state he slipped. It was wrong nevertheless.

  • rascist old man

  • candy crawley loves mccain because he feeds her

    THAT IS ONE HUGE BITCH

  • we see here why those blacks vote for democrats

  • Elaborate on your post a little more. Your reply was just a little vague.

  • hahahahhahahahhaha

  • OMG! How can so many of the people commenting here deny that it's not a racist term. Forget the CONTEXT in which McCain used such a disgusting term. It's a term that should not be in anyone's vocabulary, especially someone aspiring to be our next president. FYI, the term was used loosely in the Antebellum south (prior to Civil War) to demean black children. So to those of you constantly denying that something is or is not meant as a racial slur, go back & hide in your racial closet of denial.

  • John Kerry just said tar baby last week. Where is the media?

  • John Kerry isn't running for president

  • nice choice of words...not

  • omg

  • Tar Baby and gook and Obama's the racist one because he knows someone who might be racist. This being white thing is amazing, you can be a racist and still people wouldn't care.

  • Didn't really sound racist to me. I really don't get it. I am black btw.

  • Not the way he used it. The fact that he used it. Whats going on behind his eyes?

  • Oh my! I can't believe anyone still has that terminology in their vocabulary yet today? Maybe he didn't mean what he was consciously saying, but must wonder about what really going on in the deeper recesses of this man's mind?

    Go Obama!!!

  • Go McCain 08!

    No Osama MUslim Hussein

    Barack Obama = 1 1

    11/09 9 1 1 = 1 1 ...

    pX5z3gVUqpI

  • "tar baby" is an offensive, racially-charged, and outdated word

funny how so many people claiming its not offensive are also telling us they are black . . . I am not black, but I am offended by racist terminology, so I take McCain apologists with a grain of salt

  • A tar baby of giant proportions.....

A big ole nigger of a problem is what he meant...

I ain't racist but Mcain is, remember he voted against Martin Luther King DAy as a holiday in the late 80's!!!!!

  • Disney got in shit for this, so will he. but he was describing a sticky situation, the same thing Disney was describing with the phrase in the 1st place. the context was right, the choice of words was wrong.

  • John McCain is Mr. Magoo

  • that is rediculous........he did not mean anything racist by that ...........I am black and know about racism....I see it on FOX News all the time.........this is not......and I don't always agree with Mcain...

  • TarBaby is what Ronald Reagan changed the name of his horse to when he was in the movie Stallion Road. The horse was named for the novel stallion horse and was a filly. Rode the very same horse while he was smoking a cigar--the four stogies of the Apocalypse--as a Confederate officer--Calvary Charge(1951).

  • Just listen to the sentence, he obviously wasn't trying to use the term in a racist manner. It's not like he said "I'm not going to act like no tar baby and make that law" or "If I make that law, those tar babies are going to love me". Context, people. And I'm black.

  • im black and i know the word tar baby from the african folklore meaning "sticky situation".... i never knew it as an offensive term.

  • @jamaicafutballa09 shut the fuck you stupid tar baby

  • Let me guess McCain can't remember ever using the words "tar baby". Senile fool!

  • fuck mccain hes another gwb i hate mccain so fuckin much he better not win

  • mccain= bigot, warmonger

  • mccain= bigot, warmonger

  • I don't neccesarily think that "I still hate the gooks" McCain isn't racist, or that the term Tar Baby doesn't have racial connotations if directed at a person, but it certainly doesn't appear to be racist in this context.

  • Tar baby is most certainly not racist. I'm really sick of you people looking for words to offend you. That's right I said, "YOU PEOPLE!" I don't mean Blacks, I mean whiny PC crybabies of all races. Besides, do you think your vocabulary is spic and span? Do you think you've never had a chink in your armor regarding racial sensitivity?

  • tar baby is NOT in any way a racist word. Like the word niggardly, it was used DECADES (maybe centuries in some form) before PC language reared its ugly head. People need to stop whining and open a damn dictionary. This "debate" is chipping away at the integrity of the English language and needs to stop. Accept the word and stop bitching. Educate yourself!

  • have you ever been black?......didnt think so, so stfu.

  • The truth doesn't matter to a liberal jackass. Notice how only republicans are evil dictators but then look at the behavior of liberal dumbasses by just looking up all the "obama baby" videos of indoctrination of the young.

    Liberals are disgusting.

  • plinko747

oh it was used decades ago. decades ago they were using that term for blacks and stll today

    idiot, whats next grease monkey

  • grease monkies are mechanics.

  • yeah sure D.J LOL let u tell it. u guys have cover up definitions for it lmao

  • now if by you guys you mean white people then I'm not you guys. I am a black person.

  • Take a moment and learn what something means before you label it racist. But take comfort in knowing that the Bozo's at CNN are apparently as stupid as you.

  • he laughed before he said it.

  • Tar baby us a story from uncle remus, are you guys stupid? WHy would he compare a war to a black person you idiots.

  • He wasn't talking about the war. He was answering "CaptainTonyTaylor"s question about protecting parental rights for no-fault divorce defendants - well, trying to answer with some nonsense about invalidating divorces. And, Taylor was the only black person in the room at the time.

  • McCain is a weasel just like the Clintons, the Bushes, Obama and most mainstream politicians. I don't dispute that he evaded answering an important question, as usual. But that doesn't make this cockamamie idea of "Tar Baby" being a racist term any less stupid.

  • McCain is a traitor - google McCain POW special treatment.

  • It's like the word niggardly. Has nothing to do with race, but due to the past, it has become taboo to say it now. McCain's not racist, but I'm sure he's learned his lesson from this. At least I hope so.

  • So let me get this straight.

Ron Paul is smeared beyond belief over a newsletter that he didn't write.

But McCain is caught on tape numerous times using racist slurs like "Tar Baby" and "Gook" and he's defended?

  • Research John McCain's ties with KEMPER MARLEY. What a coincidence? It leads to Cindy Hensley (McInsanes' 2nd wife), the daughter of JIM HENSLEY and a criminal organization.

Research McInsane's role in the KEATING5 scandal where he NARROWLY avoided prison.

Do you really think a politician backed by criminals runs for office just to be of service to his fellow man?

Be sure you know your candidate before entrusting them with your country.

Well McInsane, this Bud's for you.

  • how about the fact that wolf blitzer himself stated the people of new orleans are "so poor, and so black." i never heard an explanation from that quote.

  • It isn't a racist comment. Tar Baby is a figure of speech to discribe a situation that is hard to get out of. What he said was in complete context to what he was describing.

  • Tar Baby, Noun: A situation or problem from which it is virtually impossible to disentangle oneself.

  • The termcomes from the "Tales of Uncle Remus" by Joel Chandler Harris,a compilation of actual folk tales collected from african slaves. To quote wikipedia "Tar-Baby was a doll made of tar and turpentine, used to entrap Br'er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br'er Rabbit fought the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he became. In contemporary usage a tar baby refers to any "sticky situation" that is only aggravated by efforts to solve it."

  • errr... McCain....

  • Wow. Didn't even know about until now. Sick of these racists.

  • Tar baby is a reference to a decoy used to trap someone. Yes it did come from an old story relating to slavery, but it is a story from the slaves. Not the whites. Most of these books were required acedemic reading. Lil' Black Sambo", "Uncle Tom's Cabin", and 'The song of the South". Chainey isn't being racist.

  • It's all about the context, really. For instance, to some, 'tar baby' is a racist term. To others, it might mean 'sticky situation'. Same thing, probably, with other things, like 'beaner', or you could go as far as 'niggardly' (a word meaning 'stingy'). These situations are difficult to negotiate.

  • Wow he's in a real nigger now, isn't he?

  • Don't worry, Liberals can find racism in the word "opaque" so I wouldn't take this seriously. It just seperates the paranoid from the logical in the camp of spin.

  • he has my vote!!!

  • 50 points to whoever can tell me the meaning of the term 'tar baby'.

  • He's right. It wouldn't be right for him to invalidate a divorce just because a party was unhappy with their treatment in court.

But that's not what Tony Taylor meant when he asked his question.

Tony asked, what he'd do to, "help protect soldier's custody rights to their children."

And that question still hasn't been answered.

  • This didn't seem racist at all to me. The term "tar baby" comes from the Uncle Remus stories, African American folktales, and has become a vernacular expression, the same way you might say someone's like "the boy who cried wolf." At least in the context of this clip, I don't see how racism came into play.

  • oxford dictionary:

    tar baby

    noun (informal)

a difficult problem that is only aggravated by attempts to solve it.

ORIGIN: with allusion to the doll smeared with tar as a trap for Brer Rabbit, in J. C. Harris's Uncle Remus.

  • Blah blah blah blah blah. Tar Baby is an old cartoon (maybe a racist cartoon, but still a cute awesome cartoon), and I'm sure he was just trying to draw upon the imagery that this old cartoon had with an OLDER audience who would have grown up with that cartoon.

    jeeeebus people, chill out.

  • While I wasn't going to vote for him, this had nothing to do with racism in context.

  • Too late John, you are a racist and you've lost my vote. I will vote now for Rudy :/

  • Likewise. I dont think he is all together-mentally.
