I don't neccesarily think that "I still hate the gooks" McCain isn't racist, or that the term Tar Baby doesn't have racial connotations if directed at a person, but it certainly doesn't appear to be racist in this context.

tar baby is NOT in any way a racist word. Like the word niggardly, it was used DECADES (maybe centuries in some form) before PC language reared its ugly head. People need to stop whining and open a damn dictionary. This "debate" is chipping away at the integrity of the English language and needs to stop. Accept the word and stop bitching. Educate yourself!

Tar baby is a reference to a decoy used to trap someone. Yes it did come from an old story relating to slavery, but it is a story from the slaves. Not the whites. Most of these books were required acedemic reading. Lil' Black Sambo", "Uncle Tom's Cabin", and 'The song of the South". Chainey isn't being racist.

It's all about the context, really. For instance, to some, 'tar baby' is a racist term. To others, it might mean 'sticky situation'. Same thing, probably, with other things, like 'beaner', or you could go as far as 'niggardly' (a word meaning 'stingy'). These situations are difficult to negotiate.

He's right. It wouldn't be right for him to invalidate a divorce just because a party was unhappy with their treatment in court.
But that's not what Tony Taylor meant when he asked his question.
Tony asked, what he'd do to, "help protect soldier's custody rights to their children."
And that question still hasn't been answered.

This didn't seem racist at all to me. The term "tar baby" comes from the Uncle Remus stories, African American folktales, and has become a vernacular expression, the same way you might say someone's like "the boy who cried wolf." At least in the context of this clip, I don't see how racism came into play.
