Have you understood the difficulty or rather danger of this jump? Of course he did not have to do anything difficult, but this is true for all basejumps and skydives. You only have to jump and pull quickly. Nothing hard. Basejumping is just more dangerous than proper skydiving since there is less time for everything.

Basejumping is dangerous because you have to open a rig at a very low altitude and low speed. That involves very careful packing and hoping the canopy opens in the right direction. This guy didn't have a packed rig. He didn't even have the canopy in his hands and throw it over his head when he jumped, like other base jumpers have done. The canopy was sitting on the structure above him.

Do I understand the difficulty? Yes, maybe you don't understand the lack of difficulty.

Throwing the canopy or a hand deploy device out into the air is imho not considerably more difficult than than just jumping. Packing of a canopy is certainly not a straightforward thing to do, but what aboute supending the canopy on a structure in such a way that it carries weight immediately? Is that straighforward? I believe not.

So, regarding the difficulty I would say that this jump an a base jump from greater height with a folded-up canopy is comparable.

The worse that would have happened to this guy is having a line or part of the canopy snag which would have either completely stopped him or had him fall 70 feet with a torn canopy onto a sloped loose dirt area resulting in a broken leg. When you base jump and your canopy opens in the wrong direction, all you can do is hope you live. When it doesn't deploy, all you can hope for is no pain.
