  • this shouldn´t be called "physics for future presidents" but instead be called "physics that everybody should know"

Every single human should learn these basics of physics... it is my belief that many people would apreciate life and the earth a bit more if everybody had this basic knowledge of physics and also help to make more rational decisions when it comes to controversal political issues

  • what a great series. i am SO thankful someone put these up on youtube! life changing. i want to study physics now but yeah... not really into the math. this conceptual stuff was amazing! thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!!!

  • I think that the Higgs Field is the point at which it no longer makes sense to set up analogies that our ape brains can intuitively understand. It's somewhat less classical than Relativity. And the idea of Einstein and/or Margaret Thatcher trying to cross a crowded room works somewhat less well than the raisin bread analogies "explaining" spatial expansion. There comes a time when we must embrace logical consistency and mathematics, and deemphasize intuition, when making sense of the Universe.

  • The Astronomy course he recommends is available on Google video.

    Search for:

    "UC Berkeley - Astro 10"

  • awesome.

  • I have to disagree about his talk about infinity, he says that it currently looks like the universe is infinite, it's certainly not viewed as such, he needs to update that information. Infinity in physics has a flawed logic, it only works in mathematics.

I have downloaded all the 26 videos, I look forward to see them :-)

  • thanks!

  • I like the way he lectures! Makes it nice to imagine!

  • About my videoreaction. Its my theory about atoms being vortexes. Its called The vortex theory.

I cooked it up during camping this summer and actually before i started to watch al those UCTV lectures and the more alternative videos like those from haraseim or 10thdim. Please do not burn me for this, it is just an idea thats still running trough the back of my mind so i take the courage to share it here and see where it ends.

  • Pfew, Made it! I watched all the 26 lectures in about 5 days. (its kind of addictive to get a lot of answers of questions i had. Thanx for this. I learned a lot and i think ik got 99%> the only problems ive got where the formulas during the relativity parts, but thats because im a visual artist and totaly suck on math. But very well done, I only wish that my math teacher at school lectured this way. Now im going to read some guerillia handbooks and throw over the dutch governemt and take power:)

  • 34:37 he picked his nose :P

  • Thanks UC Berkeley and Prof Muller for posting this terrific series!

  • He is saying the milky-way is moving. But earlier he said there is no center in the universe. How are we moving then? Away from what? From a center anyway? Why is there a doppler shift?

  • all galaxies are on average spreading out, not from a center point, but from each other. like the spacing of dots on a balloon as you inflate it, space is expanding.

BUT each galaxy has its momentum too, for example the nearest galaxy Andromeda isn't moving away from us but heading towards us! its blue shifted not red shifted

  • So the dots on the balloon are moving on the surface of the balloon so that some dots come closer together? Where do the galaxies get their momentum from?

  • nooo the dots are moving apart because space is expanding

where DO the galaxies get their momentum, good question. why aren't things staying still so the red shift is precise and things expand evenly. well its similar to the question of why there are planets and stars instead of evenly spread gas everywhere, in the early universe it wasn't perfectly uniform,so gravity gathered things towards the clumps/ripples. this may be the origin of non uniform momentum's of galaxies, and star explosions

  • - that makes some sense! Thanks for your answers...

  • Well, initially from the Big Band inflation And after that, meaning in present time, galaxies accelerate from the Dark Energy

  • Prof. Mueller is an excellent, sincere, knowledgeble teacher..... Great job from 1 to 26.

  • Oi, why did I even bother.

Fact : Conspiracy theory nuts will never actually check their facts. Forgive me for assuming you were any different.

  • fact : you need to check your 'data' with real engineers and not just listen to what a few nutcases are saying.

  • Thank you to everyone involved with enabling this lecture to be shared with millions of people.

All of the lectures were interesting, informative and very usefull.

My best subject was maths at school and i enjoyed it, but it is hard to understand the level of maths which most physics lectures use, these lectures were exactly what i needed to gain that bit more of a understanding in physics withoutt the math.

    Richard muller ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • youtube needs more actual education videos such as this one...seach the "education" category on youtube and you will see what i mean.

  • Just finished watching all the videos. I feel like I just graduated. I spent 5 years at a large university and never had a class this interesting. Well done Professor Muller and thank you to UC Berkeley for posting this course. This has completely jump started my interest in physics and I'd love to find a similar course that takes things to the next level.

  • Really great! I've so often wanted to study physics, but wasn't sure about what actual lectures were like - this is brilliant!

  • Don't fall under the assumption that this is a generic physics class these lectures were designed for students studying non science related majors who would benefit from a conceptual overview of general physics, if you want to study physics, which is cool, be ready for a shit load of math! its one thing knowing the ideas its another mathematically proving the theory thats the difference between "physics for future presidents" and physics!

  • Very nice videos, thanks for posting these Berkeley.

Question - Why does Prof Muller discount the possibility of a finite but unbounded universe? He says there is a reason to discount the idea but doesn't give any details. Anyone know what he is talking about?

  • i think its just a common belief among experts.

  • i am a highschool and i find this extremely helpful, i am so happy to come across this

  • this series should be mandatory at the begining of high school, the effect it would have would be phenomenal, i don't think there would be any doubt of it not working for the better, respect to all concerned in making this open to the public, and a big thank you to prof muller. heres hope to the future

  • Great lectures, I've just finished watching them all. Probably the most interesting, instructive and also entertaining webcast about physics and the Universe. Very talented Professor, thanks for posting!

  • Susskind (Leonard Susskind, a prof. at Stantford U) has lectures on youtube as well.

If youll for "quantum susskind" youll find the lectures.

But hes (as a prof.) not as good as Moller though...

  • Gosh, i forgot the wordt search.. ;)

    I ment:

'If you'll search for "quantum susskind" you will find the lectures.'

  • I wonder if there is a continuation of this course Oo

  • I have watched it all twice. I think I will watch it again. Thank you Berkeley University for posting this, I really wish I could go to Berkely and take this class, with this I feel like I have.

  • I would like to meet anyone who has watched this entire course web cast. I created a group on google for the purpose to see if anyone would join. It can be found at (since I can't seem to post a link on here you can piece together the following)"groups dot google dot com forwardslash group forwardslash youtubephysics"

  • I have watched all the lectures and I really enjoyed them because of videos like this I have found others just like this one and they have inspired me to farther my education and to make things better go to my page and look at my subscriptions and you will find other college lectures from big universities that will blow your mind away

  • Good on ya!
