  • @cahihi It was four months ago and I misspoke. I don't know why I said oriental, don't know who says oriental anyways, probably bc I didn't remember her background at the time. The only thing I meant to say is she is a beautiful Korean woman which of course is not difficult bc hello Asian women are stunning! So please try not to be soooooooo offended, I am not a jerk, No I don't fancy myself ignorant, and there was no intentional offensive subtext towards her, you or anyone else, get me?

  • replace the (s) with an (r) in 'asian', yoink

  • Korean Canadian Pride :]] ♥

  • 1. Can I get some sources on that? You can't just make up some statistics to prove your point when you don't know if it's true or not.

    2. We are not so stubborn as to ignore technological advancements. Were you expecting us to be like what you see in movies and shows about ancient Asian societies?

    3. Name a few Asian celebrities who "bleach" their skin. Is that possible? And most Asians who dye their hair nowadays are the younger generations who are more open to different ideas and looks.

  • The sources are all around you. Just have an open mind and you will understand as I do.

  • Well most of my Asian girl friends dates and only considers Asian guys, so where else should I look?

  • How about dating your own race for a change?

  • I do...and?

  • 1. Why dont we look at another angle? Maybe asian men think white women are just too unattractive.

    2. "computers, skyscrapers, televisions, etc.." Who the FUCK says that THAT is white culture? It is definitely NOT white culture. And we're not replacing any culture, we're simply GROWING from it.

  • 3. It's not that asians are trying to look white. Asians typically have black hair and tan skin. Most asians' idea of beauty is one that sets a person apart from the rest--therefore lighter skin and hair. Like the Japanese aristocrats in earlier times: they made themselves look paler in order to set them apart from the tanned lower class.

  • jesus is asian

  • yes he was a skin head, notice sometimes he wears a swastika? just look for it on google, ancient swastika

  • They believed the poor would work outside and become tanned

While the rich stayed inside and had food brought to them

  • @YahooLaRose, cont.

Speaking from your viewpoint: "You don't see Whites dying our hair Black unless we want to fit into a Goth clique." And yet, WHITE PEOPLE ARE SO OBSESSED ABOUT BEING TAN. If "white people skin" is so beautiful, then why tan?

  • Whites develop tans because our skin is not conducive to the environment in North America or other places on Earth. It is a survival tactic to tan one's skin.

But dying one's hair a lighter color does not provide any benefit other than pursuing a more Caucasian appearance.

  • Don't use that BULLSHIT on me. How is skintone even "conducive" to the environment? White people dont "DEVELOP" tans, they GET tans. White people go to the fucking beach, lay down on the sand and wait for their skin to burn. Or they get damn spraytans. And SURVIVAL TACTIC? Are you STUPID? If tanning is such a survival tactic, then wouldn't pale people be extinct by now? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure there are still pale people left out there.

  • Dyeing one's hair doesnt mean they are pursuing a more "Caucasian appearance," dipshit. We can dye it any fucking color we want and it doesn't have to be because we want to look more Caucasian. Just like white people can tan their skin and it doesn't have to be because they want to look Asian. I noticed you chose not to respond to the first two points. Your points are completely wrong anyways, so just shut the fuck up.

  • Not all white people tan and some white people are naturally tanned. Just because your a white person does not mean your pale white and not tanned or that you try and get tanned. There skin is beautiful and clear

  • NO SHIT not all white people are pale and not all asian people are tan. jesus christ you shitheads are so fucking stupid. There are some asians who can have eye colors other than brown, and there are rarely ever any white people who have full on black hair. "Plain as fuck with only black hair," to be as bitchy as you thats like "At least asian hair doesnt look shitty, brown shit & tangled." More people tan than bleach their skin, what does that say about your "beautiful" pale skin? DUMBSHIT.

  • humans rock?

  • i born in central america im chinese ftw xD

    im decent

  • lol... Look! 이모! ㅋㅋㅋ

  • i find it funny how people ask her, "what's it like to be an Asian American?" when she's actually an Asian-Canadian. lol guess I'm just being picky

  • well speech.

  • i wonder how whites feel growing up in Korea..?

wow. i bet Koreans really make young whites feel right at home,...right..?

And i bet Korea offers lots and lots of opportunities to adult whites to become RICH and FAMOUS(like the actress Sandra Oh)..? right..?

    *cough cough*

well, then again, i could be wrong about this one.

  • You are.

Koreans actually idolize white people that live among them. There are a lot of International schools full of different races, so it's not like white people only see Koreans around. The students in Korean schools have to learn English, and they look up to Americans, as if they represent a symbol of fortune and fame. I would know since I have lived in Korea for most of my life...you actually have it all wrong.

  • well, i think your opinion is valuable.

as i stated below i may be wrong.

you've lived in Korea for most of your life.

But are you asian or are you white..?

If you are actually a white person who's lived in Korea, i'd love to hear your opinion.

But a Korean person talking about what its like to be white in Korea is about the same as me(white) telling an asian person how to feel about life in USA.

You would discount my opinion as biased.

  • So, to conclude, why should i listen to an asian persons opinion on what its like to grow up white in asia, in this case Korea..?

If you're not white AND grown up in Korea, how would you know the reality..?

I still doubt strongly that Korea or Japan, for that matter, really offer the SAME equal opportunities in terms of education and job advancement to white people that they offer to their own (asian) citizens.

But i'm certainly willing to be proven wrong on this one.

  • I understand. Thank you.

  • uh i'm korean and i don't "idolize" the white people that are around me. why would i? maybe if they were some great respectable person, but not just because they're white, that's silly. there are actually more koreans around me that i would "idolize"

  • You live in America.

  • woot. go asians. we dominate your colleges. lol.

  • Go Sandra! Asians *DO* rock! I am Asian!!!!

  • sa iyo ang mga tao ay rasista

  • Thanks for sharing; it gives me insight though I'm not Asian. Other minorities have also gone through similar situations regarding identity.

  • HEHE ..

    GO ASIAN NLANG ..

    HHAHA

  • I'm so proud to be Korean :)

  • mm thanks for your knowledge! :) good stuff.

  • haha you are funny.

  • why am I supposed to get offended? we deserve it, right? :) Asians always get offended. so, I'm used to it. I don't get offended anymore LOL!

  • wow....I would have never handled that, that way.

I tip my hat to you that was impressive.

  • I adore Sandra, she is one of my favorite actresses, I love her personality, she is very inspiring. And I wish I had her gorgeous curly hair!

  • woow .. didnt kno she's korean- american.. she looks more like chinese .. no offense , bcoz she got 2 cute small eyes . ..

  • don't you know that korean usually has smaller eyes than chinese.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH i watched the season finale of greys and wooh i loved her in the show

    i'd tap that :DD

  • c selle ki joue a gres'anatomy

  • So your parents came from Korea and eventually decided to be the only Asian family in Nepean?

I'd appreciate hearing the thought process that went into that. There are plenty of Asian communities in Canada to choose from, why pick a place like that?

  • I'm feeling her. I totally understand.

  • haha "all other months as well " xD

  • That's why they get Bobby Lee to play Cristina's role in MadTV's Grey's Anatomy spoofs.

  • she's very sexy!!!!

  • simply that she has talent. and in hollywood beauty is not the only basis to become famous.

  • Yeah that and the fact that the american majority wants to portray Asians as asexual beings who do nothing but study all day and work hard as doctors and scientists.

  • I saw Sandra's first film way back when.. "Double Happiness" at the Cleveland International Film Festival (I met the direcor Mina Shum.) Since then I've been Sandra's fan! :)

  • Shes's Canadian thats why she's cool ..

  • all i can say is... you go, girl :D

  • I like her sooo much. She is good actress, I think.

  • For those who dont know where you fit in..be friends with those who dont make you aware if what you are at all. I am Hmong and i hung out with blacks, white and my own ethnicity group..never once did i feel out of place because it was the people i hung around with.

  • WHEN YOUR SMART YOUR BEAUTIFUL..sandra oh is a very intelligent women by the way she speaks without judgment and criticism. when she comments upon coming from a white community-her point is that she didnt see asian role models and glad she can change that view for other who might be going through the same thing. I love her!!

  • Canada has more peopel of Asian descent per capita than the the USA. 5% of the U.S. population is of Asian descent, whereas descendants of Asians comprise 11.2% of the Canadian population, so that just goes to show you contradicted yourself there. Do a little more research before making such inaccurate assumptions.

  • people*

  • The African Americans also have a month and there is nothing wrong with racial recognition. If someone is against that than they are a racist.

  • not necessarily though.. depending on the reason.. :)

  • i am fully blooded korean. you should always be proud of your heritage. GO ASIANS!!

  • My previous comment was for Miss900bpm.

As for Sandra's comments, I grew up in a mostly white neighborhood too. In College, I went to an Asian Student event, but no one spoke English so I left. Back then I repeatedly dreamed about being in the hallway trying to figure out where I belonged: a room with all White people or a room with all Asians. I woke up before choosing. Now I'm friends with both. It took time to feel comfortable in my own skin. Hope that clarifies things; no offense intended.

  • Sandra is just so amazing! She's my favourite on Grey's anatomy!

  • same here! cld but funny, all at the SAME time!!

  • sandra is amazing! she is by far the best character on greys (which is also the best show existing) so many bests ;^)

  • I am part Asian, but I look almost entirely white. I get judged by asians saying I'm not asian enough, and you have white people who say I'm not white enough. Where do I fit in? I never knew the asian side of my family, so I never knew that culture. I grew up in white America and didn't know about my heritage until recently. Where do I fit amongst all the argument? Where's the bi/tri/quad cultural month?

  • My children are half Korean & half white. I'm Korean and was adopted into a white family. So I understand what you wrote. I have come to see myself as American first and then Korean. You get to decide what your cultural identity means to you based on your personal experiences. Those people who told me that I did not belong because I don't act white enough or Asian enough, are NOT my true friends anyway. I hope my kids (& you) learn that too and that you are you and that's what's important. :)!

  • They should make an Asian Month

  • @chinesemo May is Asian heritage month.

  • this is an amazing interview, i was raised in a similar situation like sarah, and i feel the same way

  • so who is this "sarah" you speak of

  • el oh el

  • Inspiring

  • She does play a VERY stereotyped role tho; it's called: 'asian person who is happily integrated with her non-asian fellow americans and has nothing EVER angry or critical to say about white men, white america or their treatment of asian american men and women." Her character promotes the stereotype that asians have NEVER gone through racism or hate crimes and violence because white americans are perfect, and to avoid tension between black and white male audiences she dates the black cast member.

  • Do you not watch the show at all? Her character addressed this very issue in the "nazi patient" episode.

And she's not "dating the black cast member". Her CHARACTER dated another character who is portrayed by a black actor, and I don't see any problem with that. And in addition, the Burke character left 2 seasons ago and now her character is dating a character played by a Scottish actor. So honestly, what is your problem? Is her character supposed to be ranting angrily all the time?

  • And by the way, real-live people don't go around ranting about racial injustices all the time either. They have adult conversations about the topic when it arises. If Sandra Oh's character encountered racism on the show, then of course her character would confront it. Did you honestly believe her character would simply turn a blind eye? (And by the way, her character DID confront it when Bailey, one of the characters, unwittingly discriminated against her.)

  • No they do rant - but you'll never hear an asian woman fake or real, criticize a white man fake or real, on TV that white children watch. They will never have anything but love for white men on TV- and asian characters written by white screen writers will miraculously grow up never seeing white men call their fathers, brothers, and botfriends 'chink' or 'gook', at school or while they are working . She sings Madonna but her character can't ask why only white children can sing on MTV.

  • Btw, it was the Chief who discriminated against her because he used her to do surgery on a Nazi believer i think it was in season 4 (mostly likely it was)

  • No. It was Baily, not the Chief. I'm a hardcore Grey's fan and I've seen every single ep.

  • what a lovely person. i definitely am a fan and you made me feel more "included" and accepted through your articles and the interviews you do.

  • what month is that?
