I met my husband when I was a belly dancer at the Averof ....and he was playing that snakey oboe wtih George Abdo and the Flames of Araby. He is on all those wonderful albums. Thanks for posting this and for dancing with them! It's still my favorite belly dance music genre.
Wow ! That is so amazing! I love George Abdo and The Flames of Araby. We use a lot of their music in our classes and performances. Thanks for your nice commentary!
Do you have any videos of you dancing? Would love to see some.
Alas, that was back in 1978 -1981...I didn't have a video cam , barely have any photos of me dancing (though my husband says he will scan one into our computer so I can have something to show for those days), and people thought you were a stripper when you said you were a belly dancer! I am really enjoying your videos ...you are very good and I am so happy you are passing this excellent , joyous art along as part of a personal training program! Signing up for your newsletter.
Oh that is too bad that you don't have video. I would love to see a photo. People still have the stripper idea when you say you are a belly dancer unfortunately. I am a student of Riskallah Riyad/ Dolores Matzen. Have you heard of her? She is amazing and also was a dancer in the 70's. I am passing it along through her teachings and am thrilled that I met her and found my true love!!!
For those who want to enjoy the special flavor of George Abdo...Smithsonian Folkways bought Monitor Records and thus, all six albums by the Flames of Araby. Smithsonian condensed the best ones into a single, wonderful CD : the Best of George Abdo. Your dancing and your costume are both very lovely and classy. thank you for keeping the art of bellydancing alive and well!
Thank You . I passed along this information to Dolores/ Riskallah Riyad,. who by the way also encourages her students to make their own costumes...Thank you for the lovely comments.
