Once upon a time, I went cd shopping where I came across "Chutes too Narrow". Without having any idea of who the Shins were, I decided to buy the album because I liked the art work. Best decision ever! It still remains one of my favorite albums of all time, almost 6 years later.
My friends and I just recently recorded a song called "Nylon Whale" we would really love if you took the time to check it out! It doesn't have much of a Shins vibe, but you may still dig it! Thanks and God Bless!
i love this entire album, but the skater is fucking awesome! he's at once graceful and clumsy. his skating performance is a perfect representation of my life.
Every time I hear this song I deeply regret that I did´t put it on my MP3 before it got stolen. How can seriosly someone take someother persons stuff without caring. I hope that persons parents die in agressiv cancer
The guitar he is playing looks like a Vox Phantom made on the 1960's .Brian Jones used to play Vox Guitars .It will cost you about 1500 dollars for one.
i understand music like this. my friends think its weird and have no idea what the lyrics mean when i sing them. im 14 and the shins is an amazing band. my friends can think what they want. i love the shins and they cant change that (:
@0811sky This is exactly what I've been thinking with my friends. It's really great to see that other people of my age appreciate bands like The Shins.
lol, Rather than browsing Youtube for videos related to sex, you should consider using my sweet new device for finding a gf or bf texting bud! It's cellflirt (d0t)us
Just discoverd these guys, Fleet Foxes, & Bon Iver! I'm an jaded, old, jazz funk beatnik/hippie but love this stuff too! Very Nice! I also dug "Field Music" when they came out a couple of years ago. Kind of a like a cross between The Beatles & Beach Boys. Way cool too if you've never heard of them. Check 'em out.
There is no songwriter I respect more than him. It's no coincidence that every project he jumps on turns out to be amazing.
I'm actually working on music influenced by Mercer and his genius. I'd really appreciate to hear what you like-minded individuals think of it. I have a new music video up on my channel if any of you are interested or have a free couple of minutes. Thanks!
When I first heard the shins, it were like hearing the most beautiful sounds for the first time in my life... absolutely the most beautiful sounds ever
The shins are just one of the most important bands of the past ten years in the US(as seen from the UK anyway)and this, again, sees them on top form. Maybe Modest Mouse or GBV are AS important for us lot looking in but nobody surpasses The Shins for sheer songwriting nous and passion. I've not cared so much since, IDK, Pixies in their prime or Dinosaur Jr-that's the kind of company The Shins should be mentioned in anyway.
Great, great lyrics too-which is so rare today. I miss Pavement too.
But seriously, it took me a long time to catch onto these guys...most of a decade. I'm glad I finally did. They're not the kind of band most will appreciate the first or even tenth time.
Once you wrap your mind around how the lyrics are written, nonsensical phrases become romantic, beautiful, and compelling. See Pink Bullets.
I would never never bothered if it weren't for Scared of Chaka.
this was the first song i ever heard by the shins, and they changed my entire world of music!!!! this song always gives me chillbumps, it's the BEST song to wake up to. :) every time i listen to one of their songs, i feel like making a movie :P the shins are so raging epic!
@guigemar18 I felt exactly the same way. I had gotten a mix tape from a good friend and fell instantly in love with them. "gluing tinsel to your crown" Who fucking write lyrics like that?!!!!!
@jaypeddie definitely!!! as do EVERY SONG THEY COME OUT WITH. i was kind of edgy when Mercer and danger mouse got together for Broken Bells...and it was an ok album...but i'm soooooo relieved the Shins are continuing together. my world would have ended.
@Jolly11808 awesome! i'm from clatskanie. idk if you know where it is but it's VERY close to longveiw ((washington)) so i'm pretty close to portland. [: modest mouse lives in portland too. idk if you've heard of them either. [:
@tuliplove642 yep. i know clatskanie and of modest mouse (they're awesome!!!) Also the Decemberists are from Portland as well... a lot of good bands come from there. funny that
i completely agree with you. I especially like the line "it's hard to leave all these moments behind"... it's hard to believe i 1st heard this song in 2003 & i'm already nostalgic for certain people & places *sigh*.
Remember being blown away when The Shins did the (IIRC) Late Show's busking challenge on the BBC the other year before their Man Academy gig that evening. Great band and stopped for a lovely chat on the Manchester Uni Union for a while after even though everyone was baltic! They were amazing on stage later too!
Blessed with more light and shade than a lot of US bands today(similar range to Scots bands like Delgados or Mogwai in this respect)- a rare thing to find a better band anywhere today.

Some people want young white females to mix with non-white males.
I made a one-minute video highlighting a very tiny sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.
If you click on my name “autumntree2011” highlighted in blue below this comment, you can watch my video.
