Presently, you have to prove you have an ancestor listed on the Dawes or Guion Miller rolls, which were rolls taken of only the living Cherokee in Oklahoma in the early 1900's.

Nowadays, there are few true "full blooded" Cherokees. Lots of them intermingled with African-Americans and Irish. One of my grandmothers was Lower Creek, but I didn't find out until a few years ago because at the time it was very taboo for a white person to marry a Native American.

I agree. I look white, but I'm not fully. My great great grandmother was fully Cherokee and her bloodline makes me so. The United States not only stole from our people, but they are indebted to us. We aided the colonists and the British during the French and Indian War when we could have chosen the other side with the other tribes, we served in the Confederate army during the Civil War and our unit was the last to surender. The USA wouldn't exist without us! We never give up and never will.

I believe it is important to remember what happened in the past, but not to dwell on it. Why are we focusing on the past which can not change? If you are all Americans, you should know we support equality to all - white, black, red, and yellow. You help the white and the black in need, why be so reluctant and pissy about helping the red in need?

The Cherokee had the right idea. they didn't treat others diffrently because of their skin color, race, or family. they respected each other. they only faught the pilgrims when the pilgrims stoll their land. they occasionally faught with other tribes over buffalo and stuff, but that was diffrent. now the white men are polluting the air, killing off the animals, and destroying the forests. i would rather live in the time when buffalo ran free.

Hmm, I wonder when the Cherokee nation is going to allow descendants of real Cherokee, who survived the Trail of Tears, to join the tribe? Presently, you have to prove you have an ancestor listed on the Dawes or Guion Miller rolls, which were rolls taken of only the living Cherokee in Oklahoma in the early 1900's.

I hate that schools (in GA) teach mainly about Black slavery, but they just don't teach about Cherokee and the Trail Of Tears. I also dislike that many people bother with claiming that they are native, but have blonde hair, blue eyes. I'm not full Native, just about 40% Seminole and Cherokee. I took after my Native side on EVERYTHING, except I have one green eye (other is brown). I'm usually mistaken for Hispanic or Japanese, though.

Google Cherokee Braves also, the Cherokees even had their own Confederate flag. SOME cherokees helped runaway slaves like SOME WHITE southerners helped runaway slave. Stand Waite was the last General to surrender to the Union and he was a Cherokee! I'm 1/2 Tsalagi, trust me, I know my stuff.

You my friend, even with 15% Tsalagi blood running through your veins can be a full blood if your heart is 100% in it. I see what you mean by race too, both me and my sister are half white and half Cherokee, but I look full blood and she looks white, so don't be too quick to judge on color.

and an estimated 23 tribes accross north america had large percentages fighting for the Confederacy

Look, it was horrible, it was wrong, but its been done.
The people living there today didn't take your land, and the Cherokee living today aren't the ones who lost their land. What about the natives who lived in the part of Oklahoma the Cherokees now live in? Or the descendants of slaves owned by the Cherokee? The problem with owing people based on heritage is that you can't undo a wrong without creating another.

@nomadicsky The problem with owing people based on heritage is that nobody knows what my heritage is. I'm 3rd generation Irish and Native American. My ancestors never owned a slave nor did they take native land; they were native and both sides were oppressed. I'm tired of being generalized by my skin just as much as the next man is.

@essillius don't let it bother you, its what lies inside your heart thats what truely counts. i'm irish w/ no native blood, but that doesn't mean i don't respect tribal ways, everyone came from tribal ways anyway so what difference does it make. your either ignorant or not, no matter who you are!

i am cherokee along with 4 other different tribes and very proud of my heritage. i dont know why some of you are arguing over all this. the past is the past. let it stay there and make now much better than back then. geez. and again....i said "SOME" not "most" or "all".

Nowadays, there are few true "full blooded" Cherokees. Lots of them intermingled with African-Americans and Irish. One of my grandmothers was Lower Creek, but I didn't find out until a few years ago because at the time it was very taboo for a white person to marry a Native American.

@blueigurlie They probably came from what's now known as Asia. During the Ice Age the Bering Straits were frozen, and nomads may have walked it and settled what's now known as the Southeastern US. But, that's only one of a couple of theories. Archaelogical findings suggest it as well.

You guys were here first, you guys had the better perspective on how to live in harmony with the natural world. I am ashamed of my heritage, you atleast can be proud. The native Americans in my opinion were the free-est richest persons to ever inhabit North America.

@giroroCM This is the most ignorant thing I have ever read, man... What was done to the Indians was so amazingly barbaric... Slavery, the Holocaust, the "Inquisition" of America by the Europeans... Should it all be forgotten? Should it be conveniently placed to the side because it is unpleasant? I say they should teach it more in depth. What man does to man is incredibly sickening. @giroroCM The "you all" have mostly move on as far as I know but songs like this are to make sure that we don't forget that it wasn't very long ago that we weren't equal and this is something that should be taught more in schools because kids know so little about it and as the saying goes "Those who not know history are forever doomed to repeat it" and I am really glad you aren't one of our political leaders because with people like you we would all be back in the Stone Age

@giroroCM We still celebrate the American Revolution. If we wish to commorate the positive aspects of American history, we must keep sacred the painful memories as well. I'm proud of my heritage. The Irish, the English, and the Cherokee.

I agree. I look white, but I'm not fully. My great great grandmother was fully Cherokee and her bloodline makes me so. The United States not only stole from our people, but they are indebted to us. We aided the colonists and the British during the French and Indian War when we could have chosen the other side with the other tribes, we served in the Confederate army during the Civil War and our unit was the last to surender. The USA wouldn't exist without us! We never give up and never will.
