I give them credit for trying to create something worth listening to, something creative, but ... it's not swinging at all. When they get into Vandermark's solo, playing straight ahead swing, it's just NOT swinging at all. For those who say "so what", or "they swing their own way", no. No, they don't. Once you start playing straight ahead you are fair game to be judged on your ability to swing, and this is stiff as a board. A lot of the "avant" players are like this, they take swing for granted.
@gretschjazzer Ok yeah, but seriously, so what? Is your point simply that "avant" players are inferior technicians of swing? With all due respect, as criticism, it rings pretty hollow. At best, you're giving uninitiated listeners the impression that "straight-ahead" jazz is for pedants and connoisseurs.
I'm 18 years old and i like acid jazz and smooth jazz. Yesterday i noticed Vandermark was going to play at my town and i went to the show out of curiosity, because eventough it is not my thing i like classics like coltrane, davis, monk, ellington and so on. I got out of there with one word in my head: AWESOME!
Beautiful, beautiful piece. It does a great job of combining avant garde sensibilities with groove and rhythm that makes you wanna move. Great drumming, too.
in my opinion, this is one of the very best groups in contemporary jazz!! i just love this groove, how they´re able to put together the funky and the avantgardish together in one unified thing. thanks for this vid!

Wow! Pretty awful!!!! they sound like they are playing on broken instruments, and also like they lost the music. They should try playing 'together', but don't think they understand the word.
you can hear a lot of ornette coleman and eric dolphy influence in here. i like it alot although ive never heard of this guy before. im happy i did now.
He enchants to me Ken Valdermar, but I prefer with Adam Lane in 4 Corners. its sound is just as a great ball that grows with the noise and advances of a very creative way
The more I watch this, the more I love it. Obviously, the cello comments speak for themselves and reveal much about the writer's ear. For this Hunter Gatherer, the Vandermark 5 has just about everything I look for in music.
Love this video...thanks for posting!
