  • forgot what real music sounds like...

  • I picture a Union gun boat making incursions into diehard confederate back waters during the civil war. A young man whose older brothers are off fighting stands his ground on his families riverside dock. In a fit of youthful bradagio he no sooner levels his hunting rifle and his face is shot off into the sky. Then his fleeting spirit energy surveys the scene in the last verse.

I can just see that boat coming

It's a good sounding song and I like how it transports you to another time and place.

  • love this song ... one of the best ever from our dear Neil, the world is a better place with him and his music ...

  • Neil Young IS THE MAN~!!! Long May Niel Young RUN~!!

  • I have seen him w/ the Harvesters and Crazy Horse !!!!

Mr Young has such a broad spectrum of music. A true Master!

  • @xYOCOM5x But for us Seattleites he'll always be the Grandfather of Grunge...

  • lol

  • hey yeah he seen it coming damn he was to damn slow & the word was duck was not there yikes

  • does that face spash mean the gun bk fired or did himself in , lol never knew????

  • @567wolfen either that or the guy on the boat shot him first the he raised up first..

  • @567wolfen Last verse is sort of an eulogy, so I think the character bought the farm

  • @567wolfen

"...and my face splashed in the sky..." The character in the song is falling into the river in the vertigo of his last dying moments. The sky would be reflected in the surface of the water. It's brilliant....

  • @RenzoMiller I never met my Dad, but i understand what you are saying.....

  • @PlanTonto The Southern WHITE man maybe...

  • @eppurse Come on guys! Know your music history. Neil Young wrote a song called Southern Man, remember? Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote one back called Sweet Home Alabama where one of the lines was "I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man dodn't need him around anyhow..." Geez. One guy got my joke, my inbox was flooded with comments from people thinking I was ragging on Neil...LOL

  • @PlanTonto I wasn't raggin'! Neil IS the Godfather/Grandfather of Grunge!

  • @PlanTonto Lol!

  • This song, the lyricism, the whole vibe, it's all so emotionally charged. I can help but cry a little tear everytime I listen to it. Neil'll do that to ya sometimes. Bless him so.

  • @GPsgurl80 I know exactly what you mean.

  • The lead here at 3:39 is so damn good...just don't hear stuff like this any more....

  • Whuddya talking about "not a great voice or guitar"? Jimi was once asked "how did it feel to be the worlds greatest guitarist" and he replied, "I don't know, why don't you ask Neil Young!" ... Also said that he had an "intimate relationship with electricity" ..... One of the greatest Singer, Songwriter, & Guitarist of our generation.

  • @0481870 you mean the Linc/ volt project , he is amazing Im building my own electric , thanx to neils influence , mine will be cordless , really , russell the wizzard on myspace

  • This song was originally on 'Rust Never Sleeps' .......

  • @0481870 Yeah I guess thats why he put that album cover as the background to the video

  • This song just gets better with time

  • This is the best song ever made.

  • My favorite version. Sounds real with youthful concern over the government men approaching to no doubt do damage, where the original acoustic demo version just sounds beautiful.

  • Wow, what a great song; I've never heard it before. "...so the powers that be left me here to do the thinkin', and I'm only 22".. I feel like that and I'm 31!

  • this is my dad's favorite song. he used to tell me about it all the time. it's pretty much engraved in my memory... its kinda sad though. he is the greatest dad ever and i love him more than anything. But hes living with his new wife who is a horrible mean person and he drink's and wont take care of himself. it's unbereable and i cant stand to be around him. {mostly because my step mom makes it physically impossible.) and the alchohal. i just dont know what to do anymore. i guess id like advice?

  • @thedarkangel173 Put on powderfinger then read him everything you just wrote, preferably when he's sober, and alone . . . should be a good start

  • @thedarkangel173 idony mean to sound cliche but you should consider an al anon meeting. The reality is you can only control what you do and how you choose to interact with the people in your life. You dont ever have to say a word at any meeting if you dont want to, just listen to folks who have experienced similar situations. Everyone is welcome and most areas even have meetings that are open only for children of alcoholics. Neil's song is about living active. I agree. EYES WIDE OPEN. Good LUCK

  • @thedarkangel173 hope it'll get better for you..will say a prayer

  • Holy fuck this song, amazing

  • This show was recorded at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 78. Most of the music was new. Powerfinger was a song that came out earlier on Zuma

  • @robertross1949 It's no true

  • This is my dad's favorite artist. He grew up to him XD 'Im starting to like him more too! :]

  • smoked a joint with him in 98

  • My husband is laughing at your original post...he say's it does sound better:)

  • he's got the voice still of a young kid in the song :D

  • Whoever dislikes this song should recognize those "numbers add up to nothing"

  • Thank you . I have been looking for this one for a long time, and thought it was on Zuma. didnt know the name. Great writer, distinctive, but not a great voice or guitar. Still and all. what he does best covers up all his shortcomings.we got to work with what we have to make a pleasing product. you dont have to be the best musician to be a great performer.

  • Anybody know what this song's about? Thanks for uploading.:)

  • Great Album...but with current pol-adm...could almost say Trust Never Sleeps

  • Neil Young + Crazy Horse: live simply the best

  • 私のニール・ヤングの絶対曲、パウダー・フィンガー、メロで漂う、”ラスト・ネヴァー・スリープス"で登場、この頃から彼のギターが引っ掻き神の境地へ・・!

  • best neil young song for me

  • I heard he submitted the tune to Lynyrd Skynyrd to record.

  • @Kripesake That's odd as one would think there is little love lost between the two of them over Neil Young's "Southern Man" and Lynard Skynard's response "Sweet Home Alabama". But stranger things have happened in rock music.

  • @eyesthatshine Been a LONG time, but I believe the liner notes on Lynyrd Skynyrd's One More From the Road album, includes a quote from Neil Young stating that he was honored to have been mentioned in a Lynyrd Skynyrd song.

  • Just heard the acoustic; this is amazing! :D

  • It's about a young first nation man in a village when he see's his first boat from 'outside'. he was left there because everyone's hunting. 'when the first shot hit the rail i saw it comin..' 'shelter me from the powder (as in gun) and the finger (as in shooting). 'i saw black and my face splashed into the sky' (got shot)...so ya; not about vietnam i dont think..but pretty sure they can relate!

  • anyone know where to find a studio version of tis?

  • F@cking amazing. Neil Young & Crazy Horse. One of the greatest combinations of all time...

  • Some day I'll figure out why people come to a site to diss an artist. Hey Douche Supreme. What band are you in? And how's the Day Job at Bob's Big Boy? And who is your favorite songwriter? Geddy Lee?

  • We used to cover this song...I hated it so much. Neil is totally not my style but now it brings me some sort of peace. Good ole days. Live in the moment it passes fast.

  • Long live Old Black!

  • The best version of this song is this version. Neil is not only a brilliant songwriter, but a pretty damn good performer too. A distinct guitar sound. No one else has it.

  • this song is a great story song. I heard it and I fell in love with the way some great song writers can write great songs

  • best song ever

  • Just amazing... even after all these years. Red means run, son, Numbers add up to nothin' ...

  • HITS YOU RIGHT IN THE GUT

  • WHAT A SONG

  • look out momma theres a white boat coming up the river

  • One of the greatest song writers of all times and also a great singer.

  • @deweywestdeerpa The best song writer ever. This man is a little bit closer to god than you and I.

  • @deweywestdeerpa singing no, song writing yes. eitherway he still rules though

  • @deweywestdeerpa And also a great person!

  • What studio LP was this from? My mind is blank. I think it was the same LP as Pocahontas.

  • dumb question but what is this song about?

  • @fufunding I think it's about a man in a village during the vietnam war. Americans come down in boats and he runs out with a rifle and gets shot and killed.

  • @Yougetnothingulose I don't think so, bud. The names in the song don't fit Vietnam. "Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy Lou..." doesn't sound Vietnamese to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

  • @Brutarius ...or maybe you've just never heard of allegory.

  • @Yougetnothingulose You moron. How many Vietnamese are named "Big John" and "Emmy Lou?" Not many, I think.

  • "cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger" that has to be one of the best lyrics i've ever heard

  • Do fucks realize this is about a young man losing his life cause he was at the wrong place at the wrong time-morons!!

  • this song is about a prison boat coming to pick him up

  • neil young is a no talent ass hole, thats why he is so ugly

  • @MrWesWorthen You know I used to think the same thing, but just because he is a terrible singer (which I am willing to admit) and his playing style is raw, does not mean that he has no talent. He was the artist with the anxty writing style that pretty much ended the peace-loving hippie music craze, and exposed us to the darker nature of the world through his music in a way that we had never seen or heard before (see "Ohio").

  • @IBJAMZ I know virtually nothin about music or how to carry a tune but why do say he is a terrible singer? Sounds okay to me :)

  • @fufunding your opinion is just as valid as mine. In my circles, I have come to know Neil Young as not the greatest singer. I guess there are goods and bads about his music. Maybe Im biased idunno. CSNY was really good.

  • @MrWesWorthen fuck you!! what is your talent? tearing shit down just cause you dont like it? punk ass bitch

  • @MrWesWorthen did ur mom drink when you were in the womb

  • @MrWesWorthen People without talent don't make it in the music business for 40+ yrs. dick weed.

  • @ACDCRD wonderful use of the word dick weed, not used enough. golf claps.

  • good song

  • the best version......

  • Best version of this song from "Live Rust". Neil's tribute to the Van Zants. Too bad they died before hearing this song. This one of Neil's best outside of "Buffalo Springfield", "Harvest", and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere". Can it top "Expecting To Fly"?

  • I thought this was about the Civil War...

  • it sounds like its about some british invasion of the US: "red coats". Perhaps the fight for US independence

  • Just so awesome.. It's been years since I've heard it.. Still gets into my guts.. It's wonderful...

  • DONT ANALIZE IT JUST LISTEN

  • Very powerful song....it hits real people right in the heart. Thanks Neil!

  • Yep here it is. The good version on utube. You did it =D Liked!!

  • All of this Republican vs Democratic is turning brothers against brother, Dad against their children. Mothers against against mothers and it's all becomes a war against ourselves.Friends lets all love, turn off the TV,get over it.Paranoid people is the goal of the one world government,Succumb to lies and truth to where people cant differentiate which is which.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, so live for today.Love is the ultimate choice. We cant take this worldly shit to the grave!

  • @martinmand1r If only!

  • Have loved this song for so many years. And I saw black as my face splashed in the sky.. very powerful lyric makes me shiver, everytime.

  • Aussie band called PowderFinger, see on the interweb, quell suprix

  • Neil, the 70's were full of some fucked up times!!! thank you for the music to pull us through those times!!!

  • This song was about the USSR's invasion of America, and Neils young self fighting and dying to protect it. Simple, powerful, poignant, and set to a great tune. I wonder if there will come a time to take up arms against the Obama administration, the left, and the ruling elite, to restore the United States of America.

  • @timmycrw91 Yes, that's right. Neil Young, who is about as liberal as they come, wrote this song as some kind of right-wing allegory that now neatly fits into your present-day fascist paranoia. You're totally spot on, dude.

  • A true blue Canadian with a musical style and perspective second to none!

His style has been raw and in your face and to the point whether you like it or not.

He writes and plays what he wants to when he wants to.

Talent, History, Longevity and a truly gifted musical artist !

OK, I am not the biggest fan but I love his music. You can't call yourself Canadian and not understand!

  • One of the first songs I learned on guitar. Sadly my own brother took his life with a gun. I still play the song, and remember him.

  • Brilliant song. Every time I hear Neil Young the more I appreciate his great music, wonderful lyrics, et al Yeah, it would've been interesting to hear Skynyrd play this song since that's who it was intended for.

  • Audible tears from Neil's guitar make the hairs stand out on my arms and my eyes well up. How many great songs has this man produced? This one is high on my favorite list of them.

  • ニール・ヤングさん!強烈"ウェルド・ライヴ"でも披露してくれましたネ!~この頃の私のお気に入りライヴ曲"パウダー・フィンガー"

  • One Guy dont understand the Song.

  • @TheBigBangVRU - Even Neil didn't understand this song!

  • @LDixon007

no, he said that in some live concert.. dont remember witch one though

  • this song is kicking some ass

  • Fantastic song. Simple but poignant. Neil is among a handful of the greatest lyricists in rock for four decades. No wonder Neil liked Warren Zevon. Another unheralded rock lyricist. Fortunately Neil's still touring and Warren's deceased. But both are great rockers.

  • 0 dislikes... that's what I'm talkin about!

  • My close friend Mylan Pakes lost his final appeal and is currently doing a life sentense in california departmen of corrections. I was on a yard with him for a couple years a few years ago. He could play this song with his cheap acoustic and sing with pipes that'd make you cry. He got his third strike for not stopping when blue lighted, but insted driving on a few blocks home 'cause he expected to get arrested but didn't want his truck impounded. Sometimes life isn't fair...

  • watch?v=wrG5_2-OH8c&feature=related

Drive by Truckers' Ronnie and Neil, it links this as a suggestion...very apropo...Neil wrote this song for Ronnie and his boys to play but then the plane crash happened

  • If only for the fact that Neil describes what it's getting shot through the head makes it a cool f-cking song.

  • thanks a lot

  • hits it@!@@

  • I got this in 1980 for a quarter, and it's still the best.

  • Sarah Palin sucks. And its times like this I really miss H.Ross Perot.

  • DONT THINK IM LIKE U BUT THIS IS MY REALITY

  • This album is from 1979. "Live Rust". That's 32 years ago. But Neil's music is timless. "Rust Never Sleeps" is a great live rock movie. I think this is the best version of this phenomenal song. Great guitar by Neil playing "Old Black". I think this surpasses his "Buffalo Springfield" days.

  • I had not thought about this song for probably 15 years. Damn , compared to the garbage that passes for Rock Music nowdays, Neil Young should own the Rock and Roll Museum. He gave us "Heart of Gold" and today we get songs like "Porn Star Dancing."

  • @IrishMetalCop Amen! I agree, the vast majority of modern "rock" music completely sucks. There are still some good singer-songwriters who are similar to Neil, but the mainstream stuff is all crap!

  • A song that deareves a salute...from the daughter and the sister of a Marine. Kate

  • My Most Fav Neil Young Song

  • 0 dislikes speaks for itself..

  • @ezekialwheel yah and that medickorea 1973 is about the dumbist fuck i think i've seen here all night. this song is a story about the civil war and when the north arrives at the dock, the boy takes up a rifle that explodes in his face. ok i'm done with you all i'm outa here, and the next time i come i dont wanna see all this bullshit here, i wanna listen to the music, watch a video and i don't wanna here about al gore etc. and i especially dont wanna here people who weren't there talking about

  • this song is definitely NOT about Al Gore,,, so,,,WTF?

  • @DONNANDMARY yeah its about a boy defending his family

  • these kids today have no clue about songs like these, vietnam and the veterans. trying to educate these justin bieber lady GAG types is useless. their brains cannot comprehend anything outside of ipads, facebook and Glee.... sad. man.. sad....

  • Al Gore "volunteered" for the draft. He could had a n easy job state Side. He reported what he saw over there. He put his life in jeopardy.

Were you one of the people that spit on us when we returned? Inmn the US you have the freedom to spit on soldiers. Tru it in Syria, Libya, Rwanda,

  • mikeincalifornia...Al Gore manned a type writer. We had a few choices, "volunteer" before we were drafted, or take alternative service or run to Canada. I would not call any of those three volunteering.

"They wanted to kill innocent people". I doubt it. Al Gore could had a easy job Stateside. Try getting the facts before putting thoughts up that can not be verified.

  • mikeincalifornia...Al Gore manned a type writer. We had a few choices, "volunteer" before we were drafted, or take alternative service or run to Canada. I would not call any of those three volunteering.

  • im sure he did have powder fingers in the 60s 70s

  • Thanks for puting the song on, it sure sparked some rap, and not the rap of the 80's. good, well for the most part, communication. Nice job!

  • we we're drafted...did you ever have a woman approach you , loaded with grenades? It is a spooky feeling.

Do you really think very many of us volunteered for a tour of Vietnam? John Kerry probably did not either.

Is this grammar good enough for you?

  • Comment removed

  • @medickorea1973 -- Actually both John Kerry and Al Gore volunteered to go to Vietnam. They were NOT drafted. They wanted to kill innocent people and they took advantage of an opportunity to do so. They were warmongers then, and still are to this day. This song is about people like them.

  • @mikeincalifornia man where the fuck r you from! it takes alot to piss me off and you/ve just done it. you r so with out a clue that you r just talking out your ass. you're a fucking idiot!!! man, these politictions "volinteer" because their daddy's have enough money to get them into desk jobs so they dont get hurt, but can later say, '" see what i did" to help them get elected. and this song is about the civil war. the north was comming for them and this young boy was the only one left to hold

  • we we're drafted...did you ever have a woman approach you , loaded with grenades? It is a spooky feeling.

  • neil young is my favourite of all times for relaxing gettin stoned music

  • @556southdown

With Respect; Strange, but also understandable.

Although, I've never felt a need to get stoned to listen to Neil. Not during my whole life.

Of course, it doesn't 'hurt,' to enhance the pleasure.

Maybe it's just been one long "High," ride for me,, and I'm still ridin.'

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 Totally agree... Neil`s music never needed an enhancement (how could one possibly enhance this song?). He's my favorite countryman and I have always been so proud of him...

  • @dp1101dp

    Cool.Very cool.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @556southdown amen dude

  • Hey America....Who's in the "White Boat" these days?

  • For some reason it always reminded me of Nam.....

  • Canadians are the toughest fags goin' ..... and Neil Young is no fag!!! I kick ass and offer my Canadian belt to any arsehole that thinks that he is tough enough to degrade Neil Young....I know him personally and he told me to kick your fucking ass!!!

    Any person , any time......

P.s- Have a nice day you FUCKING REDNECKS

  • Don't forget Canadian products: Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson (The Band!!!!)

  • It sounds like a real Ruby Ridge kind of incident where the government shot first and asked questions later taking out some kid who wasn't really a threat to anybody whether it was during the civil war or the 1930s doesn't really matter to me

  • we dont want bieber, alanis morrisette or that fucker bryan adams. congratulations you gave us neil, the rest of you suck. when i was a kid i used to find your cheap ass money mixed in my change and they wouldnt accept it at the country store. Is it coincidence your country made their coins the same size color and weight as ours. No, you are cheapass bastards. We are taking neil for all that bs you pulled over the years.

  • @LuckyLukeHogan Apparently your parents were a couple of assholes. Look in the mirror and even your fucked up brain can figure that one out. How many people do you call Uncle Dad anyway? By the way capital letters were invented for a reason. So was spelling and grammar--but your grammar is probably sucking your sisters cock right now, LMAO. Have a nice day you piece of shit :)
