It should be noted that Walter Spies didnt die because a bomb did hit the prison-shop "Van Imhof" he was on. He died with about 400 other germans because the dutch sailors did leave the ship while leaving the imprisoned germans on the boath _allthough_ the rescue vessels had enough capacity to take most of the men. The dutch sailors did also damage rescue vessels they left behind. About 50 germans did made it to "Nias" in one of those damaged vessels using padels.
