I am still very confused with music theory in general. I have been trying to teach myself things like the circle of fifths for years, off and on. I am trying to understand how the way you are showing it is different from it being a I-IV-VI-I progression in the key of Em?
I think this is a very impressive cover btw. Are you also digitally creating those great sounding acoustical guitar strums?
@craffte Yeah me too, it waas just a style choice on the backup male vocal (me), but the female lead voice (Steph) was just her with some delay, etc. and she does have perfect pitch so it was a ONE TAKE with a hand held mike.
@anointed01 On the Chordboard STAC, you have key signatures. You can go to chordboard website, watch a few instructional vids there on how that is done... but to change any of the key signatures to a minor key you press the major/minor toggle. This changes the ROOT of the key signature to a minor or a major. Then all other chords update as per the key signature.
For example, in the key of C, the root C is MAJOR, and the next chord up is D MINOR, then E MINOR, then F MAJOR, G MAJOR, etc.
@MrJennion Hi, we primarily use the Yamaha Motif XS8 synth, with some plug in sounds in the DAW, but mostly the Motif with effects and played by the Chordboard STAC MIDI controller to get that symphonic sound.
@kakahich no, vocals were in this song recorded with a RODES NT2 mic and just hand held, very basic. Ran three vocal tracks in LOGIC PRO 8 and added some effects like delay, some reverb, and an EQ curve to boost some treble on female voice. Also, used add'l effect on male voice, one track, to get some pitch correction flavor to it on lower notes. Just having fun.
STAC was used to get symphonic sound on the chord progressions.
Do what Empire of the Sun does... But a strong Delay on your voice. Do a pitch shift, and avoid the Autotune at all costs!!! The worst thing to happen to music. Appreciate the video though!
Why do we say that the Dmaj7 chord is being borrowed from the key of D? Since its only one chord we could think of it as being borrowed from many different keys, right(Like A maybe)? Do we say it is from D because D is the Fifth in G and its most common to borrow from the 5th key? IDK.
Also, how could someone come up with that kind of chord borrowing? Its like brilliant.
Interesting questions, I wish I had all the answers. Music theory is very complicated indeed. When you talk of someone coming up with the chord borrowing, can you be more specific?
you need FOUR midi controllers in a STAC, but it does NOT have to be MAudio Axioms, could be any brand that works with XP or VISTA. I use the Axioms because they are solid feel, and hold up pretty well for pounding. You will find that in playing the STAC it gets pretty percussive on some musical exploits (on this song, not so.), and having strong keys is a good thing.
Well, at first when we listen to it, it's nice but... at a certain time we're getting born, why? you put too much effects in the voice. The technic is very important, you have it, but it seems too me that you don't put enough feeling when you play. Maybe you do but ...Technologie won't never do miracles. I don't believe in that...
You are right about the effects, that's to COVER my voice :), but the video of the keyboard parts that are shown are just accompaniment and the feeling is in the timing and velocity of the performance. Some sounds on synthesizers are not as sensitive to variations in velocity, so that is part of it, the sounds used.
When you say you are getting born, what do you mean?
Technology does do miracles, really, when you think of how the personal computer has evolved from a dark screen and a blinking cursor waiting for TYPING to input a command, to what we have now? Now we have a mouse, a click, video windows, sound, and colors, it is an amazing change and evolution of the technology, and 20 years ago, this WOULD have been a miracle to them.
Dude you have got so many chords wrong - I should really post a response. I think i will do that. The second chord of the first verse etc is not Am/D. That happens in the chorus/main change. It is in fact B7sus4, and then Bm7sus4 thicko.
Yeah, its just that ONE chord that I have spelled wrong, should be a B for the iii minor chord and not for the ii like I did (an A minor). In making a video, you copy and paste text and use it again and again, and so that chord got the mistake repeated. I believe all other chords are correct in the video.
Now you named the chord B7sus4 and Bm7sus4 and I named it a mix between the iii chord in Key of G and the V chord in Key of G. Would you agree with that? I played notes in iii and V there.

Check out video response above as that video explains more on how the STAC works.

What you are hearing is symphonic sound, especially at 1:00 where the background is enhanced with additional STAC TRACKS.
