  • Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??

#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)

#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) TERRY METCALF???

#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)

  • Damn! i cant believe he not an H.O.F. most underrated runner ever NFL must hate him, he didn't even make the top ten elusive runners even

  • i know him real well. he's a good guy. stayed at his place few times and everything.

  • @losaturn for real? my aunts friends with him so ive stayed at his place few times. he's a great guy

  • Redskins killer

  • Remember Metcalf as single receiver for punt returns. The other teams learned to kick the ball out of bounds. Hart had the full house backfield in those days and an arsenal of receivers like Jackie Smith and Mel Gray. Air Coryell--as it was known-- lasted five seasons, the Cardinals captured two division titles (there was no wild card) and went 42-27-1 for a winning percentage of .607

  • Wonderful compilation. However, I wish you had put NFL Films music to it. I met Terry at an autograph/sports memorabilia show a few years ago here in St. Louis. He told me that he was a high school football coach in Seattle. He has gained some weight over the years (haven't we all?), but very fun to talk to and talk about the glory days of the Big Red.

  • St. Louis never really won, also Bidwell's ownership of the team truly sucked!

  • @losaturn Get me his an autographed photo for me!!!!

  • Why is he SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO under-rated???????

  • This is a great video but why do people feel the need to ruin it with awful music?

  • U can't tackle air, made high stepping fun to watch and those thundering spikes were over the top...plus run K/Os FOR BIG YARDS!Terry knew how to follow his blockers,by the way great video of one of the greats.

  • I think blocking was better back then, plus there were no crackback rules.

  • My cat had more moves than exlax....

  • I knew this guy was good, but he's Dorsett good, with more size. However, holds the ball very loosely.

  • Change uniforms put a M I Z Z O U #9 on him and their virtual twins THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK TO PLAY ON ""A N Y ST.LOUIS PROFESSIONAL FOFOOTBALL TEAM"" ! nuff said

  • I was a big fan of Metcalf as the Card's were my second favorite team in the NFL, next to the Steelers - I loved it when the Card's would beat Dallas on occasion. When Metcalf jumped the NFL to the CFL, he's signed on with my beloved Argonauts for big coin. He was a total bust, running away with only money. He was so disappointing to watch in his later years. Based on the crazy money he was paid up here, and the limited running yardage he gained, I think it worked out to $5K per yard.

  • HE was in my top players to watch when he was playing.

  • The Cardiaccardinals era of the 70's with Gray, Metcalf, Dobler,Banks and Dierdorf.

  • @Cynical31 Shit, DADDY! Not even close.

  • @roquey44 Son had the longer career.

  • He was before my time but my dad was a die hard card fan until they moved. Said Terry was an amazing player but he did fumble a bit much. These are the first videos I've seen of him and he did seem to run with the ball away from his body quite often. I mainly watched it to see Dobler, Banks and Dierdorf in action. Good footage though. They had some awsome years in the 70's but went to pot in the playoffs I heard

  • I don't know why but I just have memories of Metcalf's rushing and I just wound up googling him. No matter what praises he gets he is still under-rated. The D usually wound up tackling air. A great player and athlete!

  • He was either loved or hated in St. Louis. As this video shows, his acceleration, elusiveness and flexibility were second to NONE. Unfortunately, he was probably the most prolific fumbler of his era or any era. I tended to overlook the fumbles, I loved him. He always punished the hated Cowboys. I remember him signing an autograph for me at a Famous-Barr store. (Wish I still had it!!!)

  • @65kowalski .......LOL I got his autograph at Sears, the one that was on South Grand . I also got Jim Harts autograph there. I now have neither .

  • He was gale Sayers like....

  • @travelswithdave Gale Sayers with a little bit of a Barry Sanders hop. 2:37-2:45 is absolute mastery and control... and Sayers.

  • Too bad Terry played on all those crummy St. Louis Cardinal teams. Had he played for the Raiders, or Steelers, or a good team back then Terry would have been 100 times better than he was.

  • @rayjr62 bullshit. the cards werent crummy in those days but they choked in the playoffs. metcalf had the benefit of playing behind a great offensive line.

  • @bpotp if memory serves me they made the playoffs in 1974 and 75, but missed the playoffs in 1976 despite going 10-4. And both times they made the playoffs they got beat in the first round. So, like I said- If Terry had played for the Raiders or the Steelers, not only would he have been better but he probably would have played in a Super Bowl.

  • @rayjr62 if terry's aunt had balls she'd be his uncle.

  • @rayjr62 Cards had three pro bowlers on the o-line, plus Mel Gray at WR, Jackie Smith at TE, Jim Hart at QB and Jim Otis at FB. I don't think he could have possibly played any better, but he would certainly have gone to a Bowl.

  • How would you compare Metcalf to Lydell Mitchell and Chuck Foreman? All three were at the top of the league in the mid-70's, and all seemed to disappear quickly and quietly due to contract problems/unhappiness.

  • Terry Metcalf was an excellent Hybrid Player for a few years a combination of a HB, WR & KR which his son Eric inherited

  • Terry Metcalf had more moves than Ex-Lax, but he couldn't hold on to the football if it had a handle.

  • With the death of Don Corryell I am reminded that he was the grandfather of the Greatest Show On Turf (Rams 1999-2003) offensive style used by so many teams today. And that Terry was the predecessor of Marshall Falk in that style of offense. Those were fun years in St. Louis, both eras of football with Falk and Metcalf. 50 years of football with only about a half dozen worth cheering about.

  • Love 70's football! some of the best of all time and some of the most classic games! I was 7-16 years old from 1970-79. A wonderful era for sports! wish I could go back in time!

  • @losaturn his son Eric played with the Browns, and Falcons between 1989 and 1996 too

  • yeah, his son played his HS ball at Bishop O'Connell. He was great. Gorgeous video, by the way. Well done.

I think your coach is probably his son.... Eric Metcalf, no? Also great.

  • Terry HAD to come to Canada to play in the CFL 77 7 78. I've got 2 orig. games on dvd if anybody wants to come down to earth on the end of his career. OK, when at Louis, he was great. Anyone know why he had to join the Argos?

  • @GGRONFORS I'm pretty sure he went to Toronto because Bill Bidwell is a cheap bastard.

  • Proobably the sweetest spin move in the history of the game. He would've been one of the best ever had we given him more of the work... The game was still in the multi RB stages.

  • @1stclasspercussionis no, he wouldn't have been one of the greatest running backs ever, i think ur getting carried away, he was pretty cool though

  • @mnvikingsfan36 I think he could've put up the HOF type numbers... He only played like 6 or 7 years, and he only had 13 career starts but he definitely had the talent to be one of the top backs of his era...

  • @1stclasspercussionis ive got a ton of games with him in it, theres a reason he isn't starting, hes great for wut he doesn't but hes not a full time startingback, specially in his era, its not like everyone else around the league thought it was a travesty he wasn't starting or anything like that, and to for 1 second think a player who never was a starter could even be compairable to the greats is short sighted

  • i see terry every wendsday he works at my school im so serious he's 58

  • Awesome video- And Terry was one of the games' greats. . . too bad his talent was wasted in St. Louis. Had Terry played for the Raiders or the Cowboys back then, he would have been a super star (and he probably would have played on a Super Bowl champion, too).

  • 4:33 what's up with the blocker?

  • There was an Oiler player on his knees near the sideline that most likely did something to that blocker, or maybe it was just an innocent collision.

  • lol terry metcalf is caddy shack 1, eric metcalf is caddy shack 2. get my drift ;)

  • Great stuff. The 1970's Cardinals are my all time favorite players. They were always fun to watch

  • This guy was amazing.

  • In some of these highlights he fumbled the ball, Terry was known for fumbling alot, still he was a good runner though, and an excellent kick returner. In my opinion, his son Eric Metcalf was a better player.

  • You've got to be kidding. Terry Metcalf was probably the most gifted running back of his time. How many star running backs today return punts and kick-offs? For a long time he held the NFL record for most total yards (it was only bested when the NFL went to 16 game seasons). Eric Metcalf was a thrid down back at best. He did not possess the running skills of his dad. Watch this video again and remember, Terry Metcalf played at only 185 lbs.

  • Ever heard of Joshua Cribbs? He broke Eric Metcalf's record, and for you to say he didn't possess the running skills like his dad is bullshit, Eric has surpassed his father when it comes to kick and punt returns, not only that but he was a better runner in my opinion. Terry has only returned 3 kicks and 1 punt in his career, Eric returned 12. Also, Eric didn't fumble the ball as much as Terry did.

  • You said it - this is only your opinion because the stats don't back up what you're saying. Did you ever even see him play? Terry's career yards per carry average is 4.6. Pretty darn good (Eric is less than 4 by the way). He also averaged more yards per kick return and punt return than did Eric. As I stated before, he holds the NFL record for most combined yards in a 14 game season (2462 yards). Even your boy Cribbs can't do better than that in a 16 game season.

  • Thomas Henderson said that Terry was better than his son Eric. He said that Terry was like trying to catch a rabbitt. He sweated a lot of trying to cover him on 3rd and short during pass plays.

  • wasn't even close. Eric never really played as a full time runner. Terry was the starting halfback. He ran back punts kickoffs caught passes and threw touchdowns. his 2240 total yards in just 14 games may bnever be broken. 800 rushing 600 recieving near 600 ko and the rest punt returns. Barry sanders copied his running style. notice Barry's number 21 at OSU> Being from kansas he always seen the St louis Cardinals just across the border.

  • Lol. I know this guy. Family and all. I went to chirch with him. He lives down the street from me in Seattle,WA

  • he used to kill the cowboys

  • Reminded me of Marshall Faulk too.

  • I was too young to watch him play growing up (born in 71) but luckily for me there is YouTube and people that trade and collect NFL games. I now have about 4 Cardinals games in my collection so I can see this guy play anytime I want. Go Cards! He may have been the 1st "3rd down back", granted along w/running and catching the ball, he returned punts and kicks. Very explosive player but didn't break a lot of tackles. All Cards fans, look for the 77 StL@Minn game to watch.

  • Great Video! My all time favorite era for the Cardinals. Would like to see more videos like this for other Cardinals of the 1970's.

  • I live nowhere near st louis but as a kid had all the football cards---people talk about the chargers offense with dan fouts, The Cardinals were like them just a few years before. Jim hart was a top notch QB as well.

  • In case you didn't know, Don Coryell was the coach in St. Louis right before he took Air Coryell to San Diego!

  • Terry Metcalf was one insane runner! Damn, how I hated seeing him run all over the Giants-and the rest of the opponants for that matter. Had he played in New York, I'm sure he would have gotten the recognition he rightly deserves.

  • what high school is that?

  • @ajmat2 renton high he be clownin lol

  • @ajmat2 Renton High School

  • @ajmat2 Renton washington according to wikipedia

  • In any era he would be ... pound for pound the most exciting player on the field. He was Devon Hester 30 years ago ... suspense and chills every time you thought he would touch the ball because he would break the big one or make someone look stupid, or fumble ... a notorious fumbler, he was MUST SEE TV when the Cardinals played. As a Cards fan...loved to see him touch the ball, but held my breath every time he got it because he held it like a loaf of bread...great compilation of highlights

  • After the AZ Cards just clinched the playoffs this year, I had to look up Terry Metcalf highlights. Amazing broken field running just as I remembered as a kid. Thanks for getting this together.

  • As a longtime Cardinals fan this brings me right back to my youth. I almost forgot just how electrifying a player he was. thanks for finding this and putting it on the web!

  • What made old-school running backs so good is, their ability to change gears!!!

  • there's running backs in the NFL now that are better than Terry Metcalf. L.T. for example

  • BAD ASS#21

  • it sucks because ive always heard of Eric Metcalf and everytime i meet someone for an interview they say o terry metcalf great football name when my name is Keri Metcalf. and whats even worse is i have a brother name Terry Metcalf and we nasty in football !!!

  • Wow. He was amazing. For me, he was the most exiting player of his era, including OJ Simpson.

  • Awesome...I still remember a 94 yard kickoff return that Metcalf made against the Eagles - I saw it with my grandfather at the old Busch stadium in the mid-70s. It still worries me to see the way Metcalf carried the ball, though - a fumble just waiting to happen.

  • MR. V-E-S-A-T-I-L-I-T-Y!!

  • Although I'm a life long Eagles fan, I always liked the Cardiac Cardinals of the 70's and Terry Metcalf has always remained my favorite running back. Thanks for the time you invested in providing this presentation.

  • Great Player, amazing field vision.

  • check out my chanell u'll find sports vid rap vids and much more.

  • fuck all u terry haters

  • go terry. i still think he's beter then eric but. there both realy good.

  • Eric Metcalf was better, Terry used to fumble the ball all the damn time.

  • so wat terry's in his college hof ha. but eric is awsome 2 i know both them terry is my ants friend thats y i like him so much anbd eric is obliously terrys son.

  • Hardly surprising. Watching this vid, I notice Terry NEVER has more than one hand on the ball and rarely has it securely tucked away. Must have driven his coaches absolutely up the wall.

  • I've always said Daddy was better than son. Son was "cold." But his daddy was NASTY!!

  • Terry metcalf is a awesome running back. that was eric's dad. the video is great. eric metcalf wears the same number like his dad. number 21.

  • I remember Terry Metcalf had a great season in 1975. He was a dangerous runner if he could get pass the line into the secondary.

Ajmat2 this is excellent NFL footage. I really like this video.

  • This is a great edit, brought back some great memories. And I'm glad it leaves out the 1.5 fumbles per carry.

  • As a former teammate of Terry's at Long Beach State, I was witness to some incredible displays of athletic skill. In a 1971 night game against the University of Hawaii in Honolulu at old Aloha Stadium, Terry ran for approx. 250 yds. and scored 4 TDs., helping us blowout the Warriors. After the game, a number of us went to a night club near the U of H campus where they were having a dance contest. Terry entered it and won!! I won't forget this amazing display of youthful endurance and skill!!

  • He was a great running back thanks for posting that.

  • he's our football coach! amd secruity guard.. haha

  • dorris

Metcalf was sheer athletic genius. Perhaps only Barry Sanders had open field moves as unbelievable. Plus, notice the blocking in some of these runs. St. Louis should hire that special teams coach. Where did you get the film to edit this highlight reel? The editing is outstanding. I would buy an original reel if you would tell me where to inquire.

  • what moves the dude had. I remember very well along with QB Jim Hart. they were always in a dog fight with the Cowboys for the playoffs

  • so u a cardnals fan? he needed a super bowl ring don't you think.

  • i'd rate him in the top 20 RB of all time

  • go terry

  • Hey Janboblarry, did you actually edit this yourself? Absolutely perfect choice of Soundgarden for the pace of your editing. really one of the best NFL highlight/Rock music ones I've ever seen. The second part of Rusty Cage would be a cool change of pace, since it slows down and gets pretty gritty. Puts ESPN to shame! great job.

Actually I think a lot of people get Terry confused with his son Eric, who was also pretty damn good, but IMHO, nothing like Terry.

  • no i didn't but i'm hopping to add one that shows better highlights then this. besides no 1 else noes how to get highlights from his collage carrer but me it seems.

  • Thankx for the great video. It almost made me forget how much he fumbled. Speedy, shifty, patient, good receiver. He could do it all. Unfortunately he left St. louis due to a contract dispute with Bill Bidwill while still inhis prime. As I recall he ended up in Canada but is remembered fondly. Did't get hurt much either. Thanks for the memories.

  • after he whent to canada he went to the redskins where he got cute the year before they won the super bowl.

  • great highlight reel. I remember him being one of favorite broken field runners along with Joe Washington, Eric Dickerson, OJ, Sayers, ...

but to see this put together was great.

what a smoothe RB. LT should watch this guy a lot!

talk about vision and patience and balance, and when he got to the end zone he showed how defiant he was in getting there.

    thanx

  • if you ask me he should be in the hof

  • One of the GREAT underrated Running Backs of the 70's. The Cardinals of the late 70's were HOT. That was the beginning of the Don Coryell offense that later became great in Sand Diego.

  • Thank You! Thank You! I'm a huge Metcalf fan, and even I had forgotten how fun he was to watch.

  • any running back can do anything if they have a o-line

  • yeah the st.louis cardinals had a great offensive line. you are an idiot, did you even watch the video?

  • People don't mention this guy when they talk about great runners, everybody's stuck on Payton, Brown, and Sanders. What about Lenny Moore, Joe Perry, Emerson Boozer, and Joe Morris?

  • Renton High School Varsity Football Coach :) & we love him dearly. he's filthy.

  • Wow, how is it that he is never mentioned with the great runners?

  • Thnx Ajmat2 for posting this great vid.

  • a forgotten star and a thorn in ron hornsby side

  • A lost treasure...one of Barry's favorite runners growing up and you can see some of Terry Metcalf in Barry Sanders...though Barry took it to a whole other level.

  • Great stuff. Loved those Cardiac Cards. Let's Go Cardinals!

  • Awesome vid. I can't imagine where you got all that great footage from. Terry was super elusive and agile as a ballet dancer.

  • Great vid! Enjoyed keying in on the blocking involved.Love those 70's uniforms.

  • A very exciting player during his career. Music soundtrack should of been stuff from the 1970's but still good vintage clips. His son Eric also played in the NFL and was just as exciting.
