It's probably worth mentioning that those with "Teacher" privileges on a Moodle course can't assign a cohort that course. Cohorts have to be assigned by a user with greater privileges - like a "Manager", for instance. That said, the teacher can disable and/or delete the cohort if they wish. Mary is a Moodle Administrator in her video which probably confuses the issue, slightly
@YourMathsTutor@conxxion -yes good point re teachers not being able to assign cohorts - I raised the issue a few months ago as teachers could see the "enrol cohorts" button when adding users but couldn't use it--they have now removed that for teachers and it's only visible for admin or managers
@conxxion Well with groups you have to make your group again in each course whereas with a cohort you make it from site administration and then when you go to groups in a course you can bring the whole cohort in in one go rather than selecting individuals. (That bit isn't yet done so it didn't feature in the video) And as you have made them globally you can select the cohort in any course you want to add them to as a group; you don't have to recreate the group from scratch.
Excellent! You should do a complete tutorial for the entire Moodle 2.x system!! ;)

Hope this helps.

Can I add for example all students from a certain city or with a specified age range?

Interesting. Can't quite make out what is the difference between setting up a group and a cohort. Also seems very convoluted.

Ah thanks. Now that does sound as if it could be very useful, although I'll have to get my head around it. Is it only available in moodle V2?

@conxxion Yes - it's only available in Moodle 2.

@conxxion says "Also seems very convoluted".
Don't worry: it isn't :-)
