That's not a weird sound. It is the normal sound cats make when they eye birds while hunting. My cats used to chatter all the time like that when they watched birds outside our window.

I've seen this reaction from many cats when seeing a bird or a squirrel. I had an indoor cat once that made friends with a squirrel. Every day, the squirrel would come up on the porch to the door, and my cat would greet him. The squirrel would cackle and chirp and my cat, Quentin, would chirp and click back. They'd visit for about a half an hour. It was fascinating!
