Too bad a nuclear device wasnt sent to Britain itself by Argentina and wiped-ot the demonic Queen and all her little demon family that along with the other 9 Royal houses of Europe and the strategically placed Moloch Axis Demoniacs (M.A.D.) in America are slowly, like hairloss, destroying the planet and turning it into a PRISON with their END GAME. Hopefully "some-day" these demonic forces will be wiped-off the map...let us pray ofr the destruction of the M.A.D. :)
its your own fault for starting the war in the first place. besides the exclusion zone was set up by the british and it was up to them whether or not to change it. belgrano shouldnt have left port if it didnt want to see action.
@jp234ify , I thank you for your information. I am sorry to have insulted the Argentinian Navy. I am sure that the lads and officers of the Belgrano did their duties as best as they could.
@chandlerbingbong what it is like to belong to a nation that promoted wars ever since its existance due to territorial ambition and to impose illegal markets like opium ? a nation that conducted illegal ops at Chagos in the 60s to turn a paradise like place into a nuclear base? a nation that overthrew a democratically elected president in Iran 1953 (operation ajax) because he wouldn´t play your oil games? or a nation that along with the US slaughtered millions in Iraq and Afgh for oil? u proud?
@chandlerbingbong fuck off fucking pirate. you and your nation survived and survive along 6 centuries by making war to other states, invading foreign territories and stealing their resources. Pick a book and read some history you idiot
EL HUNDIMIENTO SIGNIFICA LA FALSEDAD Y PIRATAS QUE SON, POR ESO LA PROXIMA, DEBEMOS PEGAR NOSOTROS Y MATAR NOSOTROS POR QUE ELLOS NO VAN A TENER PIEDAD SOBRE NUESTROS SOLDADOS, BARCOS, AVIONES....
I don’t understand how a WWII cruiser of this size went down so fast with so many lives lost? Were the crews not in anti flash gear? Were all doors dogged down as a safety precaution? I think training of the crew was lacking. Panic set in and the rest is history. A sad event, made sadder by the lack of professionalism of the Argentinean Navy in this sinking.
PROXIMAMENTE SUBIRE UN VIDEO CON MÚSICA PROPIA, HECHA CON NUESTRA BANDA, DIRIJIDA A TODOS ELLOS, A TODOS ELLOS QUE DIERON SU VIDA POR LA PATRIA. LAS MALVINAS, SON NUESTRAS!!!
@chandlerbingbong Your country support USA Army in Irak war for example, criminal lying on non-existent chemical weapons killing thousand people. That's only a single crime committed by England with his partner, should I proceed remembering you others? your country is incomparable with years of crimes against other people, accustomed to invade land without even any military potential.
Hey.....it's not a piece of shit. As I recall that ship was once an American Cruiser built before WW2. Our shipyards cranked out some fine vessels back in the day. If it's a piece of shit it's because the Argentines ruined her. She should have been sunk by a nuclear bomb instead. That's a proper way for a warship to die.
@rustikoo00 Your just jealous that your shitty conscript army was beaten on your own doorstep by a much much smaller invasion force operating 8000 miles away from home! The Belgrano deserved to be sunk, all those aboard deserved to die for invading a nation that is NOT THEIRS! You people are the pirates, you invaded a land that was NOT yours and you deserved every little bit of pain and suffering you recieved for it! Falkland Isles ARE British and always will be you greasy CUNT! RULE BRITANNIA!!
@LORDMCHUGH in all fareness it's rightfully british and was inhabited by britsh not argentine, they never ever owned the island so it should be british.

The people do not want that. This goverment dont support the war, we go to the UN but you didnt heard they. We solicit mediations and meetings and you do not accept them either.
You think that I support and goverment that wants war? I never said that. I would like that in the islands raised an argentinian flag and not a British one, but if for that one person should die (british or argentinian) i wouldnt. I did not vote the actual goverment, but is who represents us and i support it if we do not go to war.
Argentina declared independence from Spain. When we did it, the islands became part of Argentina. That's why we are taught in school that the islands are ours.
For "the people" you are talking about the Islanders?
Well, they are are descendants of British and they learned that Malvinas are british territory and consider themselves British, although many Britons do not consider them equal. Of course they dont want to be argentinians, but if you see a map, the islands are in Argentina. Please, dont understand me, i dont want fight with you, is only my opinion
Proximity doesn't define what country a 'state' is part of, if that were the case them people would have no right to live there.
Argentina hasn't got the legitimacy to claim representation over the people there.
And I know you dont want to fight I don't either we lost more people to suicide post-war than we did during the actual war so it says something about the effects it has on people
The loss of so many lives on this ship just shows what will happen, people trapped in iron coffins sinking
want to apologize for my comment about my comment on 07/07/2005. But this is an issue that we all Argentines curls. In the attack on the Belgrano, 323 lives were lost, half that of the entire war (649).
Good of you to apologise on that point. This issue stirs passion, anyone could cross the line.
For me I have to say I disagree with the geographical argument for Argentine ownership. Being close doesnt make something Argentiniian.
Self determination is key. UK had massive empire that rightly ended (like Spain) but what's left is self determined. As an colonial population I do not accept Argentinian indignation on colonialism. And I dont accept Spanish claim being stronger than British.
@sanjavierino17 why should a argentine flag be raised? Your argument for the islands is weak at best. You are taught wrong. They were British before they were spains, so that argument is bullshit. If anything the french should be caliming the islands.
And with much older technology than yours, we cause damage severely the aircraft carrier Invincible, which you never acknowledged.
The last thing I want to say is that I have no shame of Argentines who died giving his life for my country. I am ashamed of the government that we had at that time.
The best weapon Argentina had was Exocet, a weapon that was perfectly up to date for the time. I agree that UK military was generally more modern but that doesnt mean Argentina was fighting with toothpicks.
Well, let me see. I was born in 1983, so I did not support the government in the 40s.
It was a mistake? Of course. But you cant talk about war criminals when you go to Irak not for the freedom, but for the oil and give the world lies about weapons of mass destruction, not in 40s, it was in 2003. And now that Saddam is death you still stealing the country? Many Argentines fought as volunteers flying Spitfires. So do not you dare lecture me about the WW2.
You dont understand the feelling here. For us you you took by force some islands that were Spanish and when we declared our independence became part of our country. When you said "Argentina will never get the Malvinas back", you declare that they are Malvinas and no Falklands. I think that Argentina never will back the islands, but i still say that are Malvinas and Argentiniam
There are people that live on the Malvinas. They speak English and they have no desire to be reunited with Argentina. I am American, by the way, not British. I have toured Argentina before and understand their desire for these islands.
It is a measure of the intelligence and mindset of Argentina that the best this backward country can do is lash out and bring Ireland etc in to the debate. That is none of their buissness. What is their affair is they saw the power of H.M.S.Conq and the might of her Majesty's navy. They took on the British and that is not wise as they discovered.
umm...Well, the British invaded the island around the 19th century...Argentina wanted it back. Plus, the British used NATO forces and Argentina only used it's own..It's unfair when you think about it. The British were idiots for also sinking the one and only survivor of Pearl Harbour.
'around the 19th century' Actually it was in 1833 and the argument about who owned it started hundreds of years earlier -
Spain first sighted the islands, Britain first landed on them, the British and french founded the first colonies (each unaware of the others existance) spain annexed the French colony, then attacked and conquered the British colony. The island was then abandoned, the argentinians built a prison there that the US destroyed with a warship, the brits recolonised 2 years after
cheltcanary, Ignorant people is everywhere, and guess what smart ass? YOU AREEEEEEEEE!. VIVA MALVINAS, SON Y SERAN ARGENTINAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One more time, your commentaries non sense, sailingforde04. Why you don't make a referendum in IRELAND now?, aha, aha!. Also you talked about power. Obviously Britain has more power than Argentina, but world is changing, and never you know what country is helping us. Argentina lose a war, but no Rights on Malvinas! Looking beyond, you will see our flag flying in MALVINAS. MALVINAS SON Y SERAN ARGENTINAS! If you want our citizenship, we can consider that, Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
USS Phoenix, may you rest in piece(s). This hunk of junk was a floating graveyard, the argies should never have put it to sea against nuclear-powered submarines, it was suicide. Did they think the brits would just leave their subs at home???
The argentinian government bears responsibility for all those dead sailors.
There is non sense in your opinion. If We are planting 3000 Argentinians on Malvinas, guess what? What result should be the referendum? So, don't be a child, and do basis on common sense. For history and Geography MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is only 2000 people in Malvinas, that Englnad planted there for occuppation only, because for geography and history there is not Englan´s Rights to be there. That why Argentina has all the Rights to own Malvinas. Also, Argentina is a democracy, evereybody can make opinions, protests FREE. Big countries make propaganda about Argentina TO LOSE PRESTIGE, because has this or that govermment. ANSWER: big LIARS. No matter what, MALVINAS ARE AND WILL BE ARGENTINIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the people of ireland too be independent!WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS??referendum is not legal because is argentinian territory is that the county of sheffield can be free and not part of the uk!understand lol!! greetings from argentine
Look , all I am saying is it is completely wrong for a country to gain , or attempt to gain territory by using force. It wasnt right on Germany's part in the 1930's , and it wasnt right on Argentina's part - especially as the territory was taken against the peoples will. Whats more pathetic however is the fact that the Argies thought they could pitch the ww2 era naval forces against the best navy in the world !
Only they won't, becuase they're the Falklands. The people have chosen our rulership in a referendum. Our flag flies over it, we successfully kicked Argentina's military off of it and that was while we were holding back too. In fact, Argentina should thank us for holding back, imagine if we'd decided to bomb your mainland or even nuke you. That wouldn't have been very nice would it?
Nah , mate - now what makes the Falklands British , is those 2000 people "planted there" want to be British and there is no way our government can go against them and hand them over to Argentina. You are aware that Falklanders can apply for Argentinan nationality and only 2 out of the 2000 have - what does that say to you about the validity of your countries claims !
The only part of Ireland that is not independent is the northern part that is mostly protestant they want to remain part of the UK because the rest of Ireland is Catholic and if they were to unite with the rest of Ireland than they would be a minority.
That doesn't make any sense, what the hell are you talking about? Ireland? We've been independent since 1922. Please explain to this irishman just what the hell you are on about.
First to sweetygirl1975, ask to Pierre Clostermann how Argentina hit your fucking royal navy and then talk. Second, to sailingnoway04, tell me what kind of soverignty England has? Simple, Islas Malvinas are in Argentinian Continental Territoty. So first to talk, learn about International Rights, Geography and History. England has not rights on Malvinas Argentinas. Beyond any kind of govermment on Argentina, MALVINAS, ALWAYS MUST BE ARGENTINIANS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I accept that Britian is a long way away from the Falklands however it is my view and the view of the people on the Islands that they should remain British Argentina is a democracy right? why would you want to go against their will My point is if Argentina want the Falklands they will have to do that through negotiation Then yes international rights well they are not completely geographical they have a lot to do with the people you cant say China should rule Tibet because its over the border
Fuc... Britishs you killed half of Argentinians soldiers on the General Belgrano. That seems you are WICKKKKKKKK. Why you don't killed them on the ground. Only one answer: You have NOT enough balls. So, just wait. WE'LL BE BACK TO THE FINAL VICTORY. MALVINAS ARGENTINAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unlikely mate ,unless of course you get yourself another hardline Millitary Junta Every possible Government that we have over here is committed to keeping the Falklands British Now the Falklands war was a tradegy and the deaths of men on both sides cannot be taken lightly but everyone has to realise if you invade British soverign territory or the soverign territory of any country for that matter there will be a response and sadly the sinking of ARA General Belgrano was part of that
Belgrano was hit and sunk with actual footage which was a good thing, whilst the Invince was never hit and never sunk you thick, goat fucking,Spanish speaking Daygoes.Fucking Argies....Britain WON the FALKLAND War,so give up the stories about the Invince being hit.Muppets.
In regards to sovereignty, I find Argentine complaints quite odd. Complaints of evil British colonialism seem quite absurd from a colonial nation. If you were a country of native Americans I would understand, but you're not :- look at Wiki and you will see you didnt even colonize the islands first.
Ultimately, the current population is British culturally. Ideals of self determination (supported by the UN), not Imperialism, show that the islands should not be Argentine.
If you read into the situation of 1833 it was not an Argentine colony - There was a mixture of nationalities living there as fishermen, when an Argentine governor decided to try and expell non Argentines. And the geographical location of the islands is irrelevant - if you think the Falklanders should move back to UK (which the majority of Falklanders have never been to), maybe all Spanish speaking Argentines should move back to Spain. Manifest Destiny arguments are pretty weak.
@ARA202 Listen ok, because i shall say it only once. We discovered the Falkland Isles in 1592.
The Falklands have been British since 1690. The first British settlers arrived in 1765, and their decendents live there to this day.All three dates are a long time before Argentina was even a country.you have NO claim to the Falklands at all!
@ARA202 Oh my god it really is hard trying to explain history to you. HOW CAN IT BE YOURS IF WE PUT A PRESENCE ON THE ISLAND IN 1765? You really do not get it.We were there first, we discoveres the island, we put Brits on the island to live.Oh also, if you claim to have evicted us from the island in 1770 you forget one thing.....Argentina was not a country then, so Spain invaded not Argentina! Stay out of the FALKLANDS, they are not yours and you will never get them back!
@ARA202 Well whoopi do....we forgot to put a governor on the island.Probably did not think it mattered since we had found it in the 16 century, settled it in the 18th. If we should be fighting with anyone about who give it back to it should be Spain! As it was them who had ruled it not you!
But anyways, thats besides the point. We are there, we are staying there and theres not a thing you can do about it!
@ARA202 You will never retake the Falklands! There is a permanant garrison stationed there, there are 6 eurofighter typhoons there, capable of shooting down anything Argentina has with out losing one single one of our own planes! The Navy are there also. Any invasion by Argentina now would be crushed very very easily. Lets face it, your forces still use the same weapons as they did in 1982. The British army is just too modern for you to deal with.We are highly trained, you are conscripts!
@ARA202 No they will not. They are NOT argentinian!! The FALKLANDS are British. They have been since discovery in 1592, they were settled by British in the 18th century, you have NO claim to them what so ever and you will never take them back peacfully or violently. They are not yours to take, and the 3000 residents of those islands are BRITISH. They do NOT want to be Argentinian. The UN say that they are British, belonging to the British islanders.1/2
@ARA202 Only in the deluded world of Argentina lol. The Falklands will NEVER be returned? Whose going to make us? And no it is only latin american countries that recognise your bogus claim to the Islands. Europe does not recognise your claim, United Staes do not Rocognise your claim either. You may as well give up, the Islanders do not want to be Argentinian citizens and its them who the ultimate decision will come down too.Its theyre land, they work it and they live.1/2
@ARA202 2/2 And the final decision will be their decision and they will NEVER say yes to becoming Argentine. If Argentina ever did take the Falklands they would move the residents from the Islands, and the UN will NOT sanction a forced removal from their homes. At the end of the day you may aswell get used to the fact, we're never going to return to you what is not yours....simple. So you may aswell look for another group of islands to protest about, because thats all you can do-Protest!
@Saxonsoldiers geographic localization? the islands are inside Mar argentino/argentine Sea. We don't want them to be argentinian, if are british why when don't come back to their country?
@wmatts They are British, they have lived on those island for 4 centuries. Why should they go back to Britain? The Falklands are THEIR home, they do not have to leave. If they should go back to Britain then all Argentinians should go back to SPAIN, ITALY and GERMANY and give the land of Argentina back to the Indians who lived their first. Practice what you preach. You stole Argentina from the Indians therefor the only people we should be returning the land to are those same Indians!
@Saxonsoldiers We don't stole Argentina Land from americans native, we independence from Spain and thats quite diferent. Malvinas Islands are inside Mar argentino, you can't refuse that. But in my opinion...Malvinas are a little bit of island, for geographic, we should own natural resouces, but not, you UK from miles and miles away stole our seas resouces! You said that island people are british...them why do not come back home? We don't have argentinians living far away usurping non ARG. lands.
@wmatts NO!!! Your are NOT the original inhabitants of the country of Argentina, you are decended from Spaniards,Italians and Germans (much later addition). The true Argentinians are the Diaguitas, Huarpes, and Sanavirones, indigenous peoples of the land BEFORE you arrived! Also the Incas were there BEFORE you. So therefor if you think we have no right to Island 8000 miles from our shores then you have no right to be so far from Spain!! Get your facts right!
@Saxonsoldiers Argentina and England are defined by territorial limits. You're talking backwards on purpose to give substance to your argument, we all know that the land belonged to other native inhabitants, your land too, but it truly is not helpful to what we're talking twenty-first century man. 8000 miles away, the islands are just a few miles for us in the Argentine Sea. stop stealing our land and valuable natural resources!
@wmatts The Engaylish don't even have a native land, they were just bastardised evil invaders who came from eastern Europe and stole the land from the Welsh Britons after the Romans left.
The English are the only non native people in the land.
The Welsh and Scots and Irish are native to their lands though.
@ARA202 Our government will not even talk to Argentina about the subject....why? Because there is no issue to discuss. The islands are British, always have been and always will be. Do you really think they will be returned by us now that we have found oil there? Thats the only reason your pathetic claim to the Islands has resurfaced. The last time those islands were held by anyone but the British was by Spain.NOT ARGENTINA! You are starting to sound like a broken record!!
@ARA202 Right ok, then maybe you should go back to Spain, Italy, Israel and Germany or where ever else the people of your land originate and return Argentina to the native inhabitants!
2 arguments exist on this post - should the Belgrano have been sunk, and should the islands be British.
Belgrano was legitamate target; exclusion zones have never been a promise that no action will be taken outside the zone, more of a promise action WILL be taken within it, and a warning to neutrals to stay away. Argentine authorities have admitted she was a fair target.
That said, some comments here have been disrespectful - all deaths are sad. British, Argentine, anyone.
ARA General Belgrano was a legitimate target. Every single commander of Argentine Navy from Jorge Anaya on down knew the British had SSN's. Did any of these professional Naval officers seriously believe they would not be used? I can't believe that. They knew the risk. The 2 nations were at war. They gambled & lost. They were very fortunate not have lost the carrier also.
What Flag flies over Stanley....wake up and smell the Coffee...OK Ill give you a clue..Its Got Red, White & Blue...Now that should make it easy for you...You may not understand the red & blue ...But you do know the white...yes thats right you surrendered as you got your ass kicked...
UK attacked Argentina so many times, including two invasions to Buenos Aires and they invaded the Islands when we kick her asses from continental Argentine. We try to recapture our islands and we are the attackers now?? men... take a book of history, they dont bite, and no a UK versioned one. UK was the County with more wars on the world and they have the reason every time lol. All the of countrys on the World are againts UK! lol... OMG!
At 0:18 you see the USS Phoenix, later General Belgrano, steaming past a burning ship with a lot of black smoke. That is from a film of her leaving Pearl Harbor a few hours after the attack was over on December 7, 1941.
She was present at the Battle of Surigao Strait and fired on the Japanese battleship Fuso.
As gerico67 said, we should keep silent in respect for the Americans and Argentinos who lost their lives on this historic ship.
The General Belgrano actually started life as the USS Phoenix. She survived the attack on Pearl Harbor (a few photographs exist of her during the attack) and assisted with the escoting of surviving ships out of the harbour once the attack was over. After this her career included takng part in the Battles of Leyte Gulf, Bataan and Corregidor. She had a fine and distinguished career and it's a shame she had to go out the way sh did.
I don't know. Getting sunk during war lands a ship more prestige than rotting away at a breaker's yard. I wonder how many of Phoenix's (not sure about the plural of that word :/ ) sister ships will go down in the history books?
Is anyone on this website that knows anything about naval warfare going to claim that you can deduce the intention of a warship in open ocean from its instantaneous bearing?
The sub would take hours to get into an attacking position, and definitely would NOT be relaying to london what the updates on the bearing of the cruiser were.
The Captain of the Belgrano later admitted what his orders were, and it wasn't tourism.
The heading a ship can be changed at any time, it's the location that matters. Just because belgrano was heading away at time didn't change the fact that she was very close to the zone.
The sinking of the belgrano trigered the argentine air force to strike back, a consequence which was already known by Thatcher. She did also need war in order to increase her popularity in Britain.
That sinking is widely considered a crime of war because war was not declared at the moment of the sinking.
If you ever tell the family of those who could be alive today, they would surely think you are absolutely wrong.
>war was not declared - War was declared on the 2 April, one month before Belgrano was sunk. And I'm fairly sure that attacking another country's territory constitutes a declaration of war.
> argentine air force to strike back - The Argentine airforce was already attacking our ships. But true, the attacks increased following the sinking.
>increase her popularity in Britain. - That's also completely true, the Falkland's war landed her another decade in office. But we didn't start it did we?
Yes, it did have the desired effect. After the Belgrano was sunk the Argentine navy returned to port and was effectively eliminated for the remainder of the war.
It was also a great morale boost for the British forces landing on the islands and at home.
Who considered it a war crime? The Argentines attacked and deserved what they got. I mean really, didn't they have anything better to do like torture civilians or default on some debt.
So the shadow of the Falkland/Malvinas conflict is still here. The other side says the ship was sailing away and the other side that it was still operating. So what's the truth? Well, if there was a militar junta in the other country and Thatcher's regime in the other country, I guess there was both to blame. The sad thing is that almost 1000 people were killed in a conflict. What the politicians lie, the people will die.
this is the best comment i read so far! however Belgrano was out of the zone that set by British and the biggest tragedy is that the crew of the submarine which sunk the ship, didnt stopped to help the belgrano crew as required from war laws.

@HerbSuperb44 It was when it was sunk. It was a marvellous warship when built but out of date and past it when it was sunk.

The people do not want that. This goverment dont support the war, we go to the UN but you didnt heard they. We solicit mediations and meetings and you do not accept them either.
sanjavierino17 2 years ago
You think that I support and goverment that wants war? I never said that. I would like that in the islands raised an argentinian flag and not a British one, but if for that one person should die (british or argentinian) i wouldnt. I did not vote the actual goverment, but is who represents us and i support it if we do not go to war.
sanjavierino17 2 years ago
Argentina belongs to Spain!
I'm using the Argentinian Government's logic of course.
MrTom07 2 years ago
@MrTomo07
Argentina declared independence from Spain. When we did it, the islands became part of Argentina. That's why we are taught in school that the islands are ours.
sanjavierino17 2 years ago
That's all well and good, except Spain didn't own the Islands at the time either, making such an assertion inaccurate.
Ergo they have never actually been Argentinian.
And to be honest I myself doubt a war too, but if it came to war to defend the people there I'd support it
If the coin was flipped I'd be in your place, I wouldnt support attempts to take the islands
However there is one very important thing, you might say they are called the Malvinas and are Argentina but the ppl there don't.
MrTom07 2 years ago
For "the people" you are talking about the Islanders?
Well, they are are descendants of British and they learned that Malvinas are british territory and consider themselves British, although many Britons do not consider them equal. Of course they dont want to be argentinians, but if you see a map, the islands are in Argentina. Please, dont understand me, i dont want fight with you, is only my opinion
sanjavierino17 2 years ago
Proximity doesn't define what country a 'state' is part of, if that were the case them people would have no right to live there.
Argentina hasn't got the legitimacy to claim representation over the people there.
And I know you dont want to fight I don't either we lost more people to suicide post-war than we did during the actual war so it says something about the effects it has on people
The loss of so many lives on this ship just shows what will happen, people trapped in iron coffins sinking
MrTom07 2 years ago
want to apologize for my comment about my comment on 07/07/2005. But this is an issue that we all Argentines curls. In the attack on the Belgrano, 323 lives were lost, half that of the entire war (649).
sanjavierino17 2 years ago
Good of you to apologise on that point. This issue stirs passion, anyone could cross the line.
For me I have to say I disagree with the geographical argument for Argentine ownership. Being close doesnt make something Argentiniian.
Self determination is key. UK had massive empire that rightly ended (like Spain) but what's left is self determined. As an colonial population I do not accept Argentinian indignation on colonialism. And I dont accept Spanish claim being stronger than British.
AykayUK 1 year ago
@sanjavierino17 why should a argentine flag be raised? Your argument for the islands is weak at best. You are taught wrong. They were British before they were spains, so that argument is bullshit. If anything the french should be caliming the islands.

DarkestManager 2 years ago
'around the 19th century' Actually it was in 1833 and the argument about who owned it started hundreds of years earlier -
Spain first sighted the islands, Britain first landed on them, the British and french founded the first colonies (each unaware of the others existance) spain annexed the French colony, then attacked and conquered the British colony. The island was then abandoned, the argentinians built a prison there that the US destroyed with a warship, the brits recolonised 2 years after

Look , all I am saying is it is completely wrong for a country to gain , or attempt to gain territory by using force. It wasnt right on Germany's part in the 1930's , and it wasnt right on Argentina's part - especially as the territory was taken against the peoples will. Whats more pathetic however is the fact that the Argies thought they could pitch the ww2 era naval forces against the best navy in the world !
sailingforde04 2 years ago
Only they won't, becuase they're the Falklands. The people have chosen our rulership in a referendum. Our flag flies over it, we successfully kicked Argentina's military off of it and that was while we were holding back too. In fact, Argentina should thank us for holding back, imagine if we'd decided to bomb your mainland or even nuke you. That wouldn't have been very nice would it?

Nah , mate - now what makes the Falklands British , is those 2000 people "planted there" want to be British and there is no way our government can go against them and hand them over to Argentina.
AykayUK 2 years ago 12
ARA202 2 years ago
If you read into the situation of 1833 it was not an Argentine colony - There was a mixture of nationalities living there as fishermen, when an Argentine governor decided to try and expell non Argentines. And the geographical location of the islands is irrelevant - if you think the Falklanders should move back to UK (which the majority of Falklanders have never been to), maybe all Spanish speaking Argentines should move back to Spain. Manifest Destiny arguments are pretty weak.
AykayUK 2 years ago
ARA202 2 years ago 4
ARA202 2 years ago 2

@ARA202 Listen ok, because i shall say it only once. We discovered the Falkland Isles in 1592.
The Falklands have been British since 1690. The first British settlers arrived in 1765, and their decendents live there to this day.All three dates are a long time before Argentina was even a country.you have NO claim to the Falklands at all!
Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
ARA202 1 year ago

6. Hasta 1833 las islas tuvieron 4 gobernadores Argentinos.
7. Argentina hace 177 años que reclama las islas.

Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
ARA202 1 year ago
@ARA202 You will never retake the Falklands! There is a permanant garrison stationed there, there are 6 eurofighter typhoons there, capable of shooting down anything Argentina has with out losing one single one of our own planes! The Navy are there also. Any invasion by Argentina now would be crushed very very easily. Lets face it, your forces still use the same weapons as they did in 1982. The British army is just too modern for you to deal with.We are highly trained, you are conscripts!
Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
ARA202 1 year ago
@ARA202 No they will not. They are NOT argentinian!! The FALKLANDS are British. They have been since discovery in 1592, they were settled by British in the 18th century, you have NO claim to them what so ever and you will never take them back peacfully or violently. They are not yours to take, and the 3000 residents of those islands are BRITISH. They do NOT want to be Argentinian. The UN say that they are British, belonging to the British islanders.1/2
Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
ARA202 1 year ago
@ARA202 Only in the deluded world of Argentina lol. The Falklands will NEVER be returned? Whose going to make us? And no it is only latin american countries that recognise your bogus claim to the Islands. Europe does not recognise your claim, United Staes do not Rocognise your claim either. You may as well give up, the Islanders do not want to be Argentinian citizens and its them who the ultimate decision will come down too.Its theyre land, they work it and they live.1/2
Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
@ARA202 2/2 And the final decision will be their decision and they will NEVER say yes to becoming Argentine. If Argentina ever did take the Falklands they would move the residents from the Islands, and the UN will NOT sanction a forced removal from their homes. At the end of the day you may aswell get used to the fact, we're never going to return to you what is not yours....simple. So you may aswell look for another group of islands to protest about, because thats all you can do-Protest!
Saxonsoldiers 1 year ago
ARA202 1 year ago

@Saxonsoldiers geographic localization? the islands are inside Mar argentino/argentine Sea. We don't want them to be argentinian, if are british why when don't come back to their country?
wmatts 11 months ago
@wmatts They are British, they have lived on those island for 4 centuries. Why should they go back to Britain? The Falklands are THEIR home, they do not have to leave. If they should go back to Britain then all Argentinians should go back to SPAIN, ITALY and GERMANY and give the land of Argentina back to the Indians who lived their first. Practice what you preach. You stole Argentina from the Indians therefor the only people we should be returning the land to are those same Indians!
Saxonsoldiers 11 months ago
@Saxonsoldiers We don't stole Argentina Land from americans native, we independence from Spain and thats quite diferent. Malvinas Islands are inside Mar argentino, you can't refuse that. But in my opinion...Malvinas are a little bit of island, for geographic, we should own natural resouces, but not, you UK from miles and miles away stole our seas resouces! You said that island people are british...them why do not come back home? We don't have argentinians living far away usurping non ARG. lands.
wmatts 11 months ago
@wmatts NO!!! Your are NOT the original inhabitants of the country of Argentina, you are decended from Spaniards,Italians and Germans (much later addition). The true Argentinians are the Diaguitas, Huarpes, and Sanavirones, indigenous peoples of the land BEFORE you arrived! Also the Incas were there BEFORE you. So therefor if you think we have no right to Island 8000 miles from our shores then you have no right to be so far from Spain!! Get your facts right!
Saxonsoldiers 11 months ago
@Saxonsoldiers Argentina and England are defined by territorial limits. You're talking backwards on purpose to give substance to your argument, we all know that the land belonged to other native inhabitants, your land too, but it truly is not helpful to what we're talking twenty-first century man. 8000 miles away, the islands are just a few miles for us in the Argentine Sea. stop stealing our land and valuable natural resources!
wmatts 11 months ago
@wmatts The Engaylish don't even have a native land, they were just bastardised evil invaders who came from eastern Europe and stole the land from the Welsh Britons after the Romans left.
The English are the only non native people in the land.
The Welsh and Scots and Irish are native to their lands though.
TheFatalInstinct1 11 months ago
@ARA202 Our government will not even talk to Argentina about the subject....why? Because there is no issue to discuss. The islands are British, always have been and always will be. Do you really think they will be returned by us now that we have found oil there? Thats the only reason your pathetic claim to the Islands has resurfaced. The last time those islands were held by anyone but the British was by Spain.NOT ARGENTINA! You are starting to sound like a broken record!!

AykayUK 2 years ago
ARA General Belgrano was a legitimate target. Every single commander of Argentine Navy from Jorge Anaya on down knew the British had SSN's. Did any of these professional Naval officers seriously believe they would not be used? I can't believe that. They knew the risk. The 2 nations were at war. They gambled & lost. They were very fortunate not have lost the carrier also.
matapan50 2 years ago
The sinking IMHO was one of the key factors in the war.
The Argentine navy headed back to port and never ventured out again so tactically it was a masterstroke.

She lives on.

ARA202 3 years ago

Ha-ha BRITISH sunk American SHIP General Belgrano is -ex-USS BROOKLYN =)
AbsoliteZero 3 years ago
The General Belgrano actually started life as the USS Phoenix. She survived the attack on Pearl Harbor (a few photographs exist of her during the attack) and assisted with the escoting of surviving ships out of the harbour once the attack was over. After this her career included takng part in the Battles of Leyte Gulf, Bataan and Corregidor. She had a fine and distinguished career and it's a shame she had to go out the way sh did.
NathanF11989 3 years ago
I don't know. Getting sunk during war lands a ship more prestige than rotting away at a breaker's yard. I wonder how many of Phoenix's (not sure about the plural of that word :/ ) sister ships will go down in the history books?

First and only ship to be sunk by a nuclear submarine - The Conqueror was not fitted with missiles at the time, and was not an SSBN.

Oh how the Royal Navy wishes it could defend these islands by being kind to the Belgrano.
That comment about stopping to help, with two destroyers waiting, is simply stupid, and the common currency of the loud-mouthed liberal dreamer.
"War laws" he says. Where were these laws on April 2nd, 1982. Remember? Or is that different?

Is anyone on this website that knows anything about naval warfare going to claim that you can deduce the intention of a warship in open ocean from its instantaneous bearing?
The sub would take hours to get into an attacking position, and definitely would NOT be relaying to london what the updates on the bearing of the cruiser were.
The Captain of the Belgrano later admitted what his orders were, and it wasn't tourism.
TroyaE117 4 years ago
The heading a ship can be changed at any time, it's the location that matters. Just because belgrano was heading away at time didn't change the fact that she was very close to the zone.
It did have desired effect though.
SyberSid 4 years ago
"it did have desired effect though"
Wrong!
The sinking of the belgrano trigered the argentine air force to strike back, a consequence which was already known by Thatcher. She did also need war in order to increase her popularity in Britain.
That sinking is widely considered a crime of war because war was not declared at the moment of the sinking.
If you ever tell the family of those who could be alive today, they would surely think you are absolutely wrong.
sonnyk88 3 years ago
>war was not declared - War was declared on the 2 April, one month before Belgrano was sunk.
SyberSid 3 years ago
>Wrong!
Yes, it did have the desired effect. After the Belgrano was sunk the Argentine navy returned to port and was effectively eliminated for the remainder of the war.
It was also a great morale boost for the British forces landing on the islands and at home.
SyberSid 3 years ago
Who considered it a war crime? The Argentines attacked and deserved what they got. I mean really, didn't they have anything better to do like torture civilians or default on some debt.
Kenbrucelesliedale 3 years ago
The Conqueror did help she refrained from sinking the escorts as well so that they could render assistance.

What the politicians lie, the people will die.
tauroscorp 4 years ago
this is the best comment i read so far! however Belgrano was out of the zone that set by British and the biggest tragedy is that the crew of the submarine which sunk the ship, didnt stopped to help the belgrano crew as required from war laws.

her escorts were leaft to help the survivors, the british made it clear that any naval units outside territorial waters are liable to attack.
