'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religous toleration to offer them an asylum.' John Adams, 2nd President of the U.S.A
heh. that being said, thanks for posting this! i loved this album as a teenager and just stumbled across 'pacific express' on pandora and was blown away by how cool that track is!
@jamesedwardtheobald totally agree with you man. Its very unmusical to do all those fast licks as much as he does. which surprises me because he definitly is a musical genious... he should know better!!!!!! hahaha
@ynot69her A cover is always necessary. In concealment lies a great part of our strength. Hence we must always hide ourselves under the name of another society. --Die neusten ararbeiten des Spartacus and Philo in dem Illuminaten-Orden, 1794, p: 165
This is taken from page 491 of Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. 'Coincidentally' Umberto Eco has written the introduction to the newly printed version of Alexandre's The Count of Monte Christo.
His technique has come on loads since this clip. His technique now is breathtaking but that misses the point totally...the lines he plays now are so much more complex and imaginative than the 'shredders'. Anyone can shred with distortion/compression, Johnny can do it on an acoustic. Sorry, but George Bellas could not lace Johnnys boots.
shred king eh?ive always loved John but ...........you'll need to delve into the works of George Bellas to se how far guitar technique has actually come
Yes, but even more Shawn Lane´s later stuff with Jonas Hellborg ot the Johansson brothers. Heard his solo on Acrostic Shibboleth today. First take and 100 % improvised.

love mclaughlin the composer. always thought his soloing was nervous and high strung like a bee caught in a jar, and his tone of late is flat/lifeless
technique is never more important than music. i wish i had known that growing up and learning to play guitar.
he's faking it a lot here in this track with that open string riff, and yes i can play this kind of shit...
mclaughlin the composer is untouchable, though and i think his contribution to progressive rock and fusion is underappreciated.

@jamesedwardtheobald Who cares how difficult it is or isnt?? It sounds cool.

@funkagent think ya missed my point! that's exactly what i said! to quote myself:
"technique is never more important than music."
if it sounds good doesn't matter how it's done. the twitchy riffs do nothing for me, though.

In this clip you can hear why Shawn Lane said that JMac was the "absolute master" of right hand technique.
