It is always appreciated when an attempt is made to re-create the actual sound of the music from another period. As a new subscriber to your channel, I thank you for disclosing it to me.
But why use a baroque orchestra for a 1791 work? I wouldn't expect the English Concert to play Beethoven...Damrau is great. The orchestra is crap. The punches are to punched and the orchestra disappears between the punches. That's not what I call accompanying the solist.
@LordHettrick I used to agree with you, but after seeing them live with Diana at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées last year, I am convinced that the problem with this recording was actually the recording location and the placement of the microphones. They sounded great, live!
@Lilith89ibz I'll take your word for it, as Diana Damrau has not cared to make a stop in Quebec yet. Curious, you would think that the sound engineers would know what they are doing.
@LordHettrick In 1791 they still used gut strings and baroque type violins and wooden flutes and valveless brass... They didn't just started using modern instruments in the classical period... The orchestra as we know it today was only formed in the late 1800's. So, they are playing as closely we can play to Mozart's time
After listening to her version on stage of this aria I just realized that this version is on a lower key than the one she sang on stage which is the original key. She did an awesome job on this version too, but it seems to me like it was harder for her to sing this with the same power and clearness in this lower key. This usually happens a lot with coloratura sopranos, they should´ve left the aria on it´s original key cause she can sing it perfectly.
@IshyIMB017 Actually, they are playing in the original key, but they are tuned according to the original tuning, which is A415 instead of A440 or A442 which are what we are used to hearing nowadays.
This was not done to accomodate Diana's voice at all (you are right, she was more comfortable with a higher pitch because of her muscle memory), but to fit the baroque orchestra and the recording location.
@Lilith89ibz - Wow, you are so smart and I mean that honestly. I have decent relative pitch but not perfect pitch. I didn't realize this recording had been lowered. It's ironic you should mention A440 vs. A442. The violinist I work with has her piano tuned to A441! I totally agree with you in terms of Diana's kinesthetic response to the key; she doesn't seem as comfortable singing slightly lower; I just couldn't put my finger on it. Thanks much for the information. She's still wonderful.
I think you have to really be perfectly studied, in the mood, amazingly talented, and have run around the block jumping up and down for 15 minutes prior to this--in order to perform this song well. suffice it to say, diana damrau is really an incredible woman!
She's amazing, but unfortunately, so is not Jérémie Rhorer. He's far too insisting on the punches and not enough on the accompanying. The brass is too heavy.
oh. my. god. are there any other words needed? im 16 years old and i dont no anyone who lives anywhere near me who even know what opera is let alone how moving and magnificeint it really is. i feel privlaged to know that i was able to live in the same era as Diana Damrau. thank you for making me cry, <3
Vollendung in höchster Form.
Yes, I love it when Harry Potter disappears under the music stand. Damrau sings brilliantly - her characterisation adds a dimension to her voice of sexy hatred. Incredible.
oh man i love damrau. Anyone else notice that this is not the original key though? either that or they raised it for her performance. Which one is the right one? I don't have a piano so I can't really check if this one is low or the other one is high. As always though, damrau does an amazing job. definitely my favorite soprano...
i had the pleasure of meeting Diana Damrau after one of her performances as Gilda (Rigoletto) at the Met. she was very sweet. I asked her about the queen of the night. She said (in her cute little german accent) that the role is one of her favorites but its one that she will retire soon. "Its just so intense. You have to give 110% every time"
No, it's not the video. It was tuned down for the recording. I am not happy with that either, but well... Baroque orchestra, original instruments, original pitch. It had to be everything, or none of those lol
Well, the reason for that is simple. I'm talking about violins, now, that is what I know about. Back then, the strings of the violin were made out of gut, and technology was not so great. I mean, lots of people use gut strings nowadays too, but metallic strings are becoming more popular.
Those strings did not respond in a good way to much tension (to tune upwards you have to stretch the string, obviously).
Hmmm.... i see what you mean, but I still thought that standard A was a semitone higher which would still pull the tuning upwards rather than downwards. Anyway, my memory is a bit shaky so I could be wrong
I already heard several Queens of the Night, but there is just something about her voice that makes her the best of all. She has a really marvelous voice.
Just wondering, when she does this song and other songs live is it pre-recorded? Because it seems like it takes A LOT out of her, and she cant look like that on stage, and she usually doesnt. Or is she just able to hold it together when shes live?
Here she isn't so good as she had been at the Covent Garden. Take a look and prove my words. There she was extremely wonderful. I simply loved her taking the Queen. Here it's not quite convincing as there. Please, watch it. And please, if you know the name of this young and great and very beautiful conducter. I loved him. He has lots of energy. Bravo, guy! I'm in doubt who I would marry! :) but I think the guy! ihihhihi He's so cute!
Yeah, well, it's not the same to record a CD than to be acting on stage. And, well, great as Jéremie Rhorer may be, Sir Colin Davis was conducting in Covent Garden! ;-)
Ok! I know it too, but she could try to be as if on stage, at least putting one third of what she has done in that production, but I know also, now it's a new conducting. Ok! My comment does't mean she's horrible here. No! She's still good, but it lacks the magic power present in the live interpretation on stage. But despite everything Congratulations to her! And thank you for saying me the name of the conducter. :)

Oh, well, that's because she was probably recording all day. You can't be like on stage when you are recording. There are a lot of things missing! :)
