I've not been back...home....since I last visited in 1998, just before I expatriated..
I used to get my biggest inspirations from riding the L, just watching the scenery and enjoying the journey. Oft times to Downtown Loop or to Midway or O'Hare.
Yes, its one of the best things about Chicago... I moved from there about 6 months ago, and the "L,", the Lake, and incredible diversity of humanity are the things I most miss.
I rode the red line before to get some Harolds Chicken, I was wit my older brother some crackhead try to jack us.. My Dad also told em his stories about red line
Hasn't it though! When it rains or snows... the roof leaks all over the place, they have to put up red cones and safety tape on the stairs... its pretty ridiculous, given that this is a major shopping stop, very busy, the equiv. of a strip mall in suburbia!
If I have a lot to bring back, sometimes I'll walk to the next stop north (which has an escalator) or just take the bus.
I've visited Philly, it has its charm and the history of it can't be beat, but sadly like St. Louis, the political powers seem to be more pulling against each other than working together... it could be so much more than it is! (I lived a few hours outside it 10 years ago.)
*Sigh*...Ah, memories...

You're welcome, glad you appreciated it! Chicago's a fun place to live, and the only one between the coasts with a decent mass transit system.

Sure beats funky Philly! I hate it here and I miss Chicago. On the "L" here it's a womans voice that is very irritating!
