  • who is after bob wills?

  • Sorry, the Lincoln flathead V8 of the early 50s was significantly larger than the Ford and Merc version in both displacement and physical size. Looked like and industrial motor.

  • Comment removed

  • The original Hot Rod Lincoln by Charlie Ryan was running a flathead Lincoln V-12 (Hot Rod Lincoln). 12 cylinders but the bore, thus displacement, was relatively small. The intent was to give a smooth running motor. Commander Cody changed it to the more common V8 flathead.

  • What's the name of the song at 2:51?

  • @MrYoter I don't know what the name of that song is at 2:51 but I sure would like to!

  • @SouthernBigBen hey i think it's called Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy.

  • @MrYoter Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy.

  • AFAIC this is the best version of all. The song originally was written as a response or sequel to "Hot Rod Race" by Arkie Shibley which came out in the late 40's or early 50's. The first line of "Hot Rod Lincoln is "You've heard the story of the Hot Rod Race where the Lincolns and Mercury were setting the pace, that story is true I'm here to say, cause I was drivin' that Model A."

  • Bill Kirchen is bringing the supertwang, he's the king! Gotta get out to see him one of these days, he passes through our town a lot.

  • A few changes from the original;

"it's got eight cylinders" ( not twelve) "it's got four barrel carbs" (plural) "I twisted the speedometer cable off again" (not "then")

Imagine a big inch dual quad V8 Lincoln in a Model A with 4:11s and overdrive.? YEOW!

  • The original line is "Twisted the speedometer cable off the end."

  • Nope. "Twisted the speedomer cable off then". Listen to it.

  • Well, I would never argue with an expert but the lyrics are filed at the BMI site and are easy to check. I've been performing this song for close to 50 years but guess you know more than I do so I'll change it. By the way, the song refers to a 12 cylinder Lincoln Zephyr engine, the flathead V-12 used in the Lincoln Continental of the late 30's and 40's. The lyrics are "got 12 cylinders, use 'em all, with overdrive, it just won't stall. It's not a big inch dual quad V8 Lincoln. Look it up.

  • The original Hot Rod Race came out in the early 50's. Charlie Ryan wrote this and recorded it in 1960. His original version is on You Tube. W S Stevenson is often credited as co-writer but he was the guy who owned a record/publishing company in Pasadena in those days and insisted on taking half or more of any song he recorded. The first big hit on this was by country singer Johney Bond, who changed some of the lyrics. Commander Cody did it in the 70's. IMHO Bill Kirchen's version is #1.

  • in the commander cody version, it's a v-8

but the lincoln zephyr 12 cylinder makes the song way better.

  • Car passin music!

  • People who clap on one and three should be placed in a giant glass jar.

  • lol

  • People who think they contribute by clapping should be given a refund and sent home.

  • Musician humor!!!!!!

  • @bbstopit Head downward. And the jar then filled with cement.

  • @bbstopit with chloroform-laced cotton balls

  • pat travers does a gr8 version of this, and i remember a band from warrington in the uk called poacher who did a fantastic version.

  • I also heard this on XM,on x country, loved it! I don't care who wrote it or who what ever .This groupe of twangbangers made it their own .

  • Looking forward to Bill playing at Radio Radio in Indianapolis

on Friday, September 12: Bill Kirchen + Mandy Marie and The Cool Hand Lukes

  • Hot Rod Lincoln is a cover, it's not a Commander Cody original. HRL was written by Charlie Ryan back in the 50's.

  • True, but they made it popular with the younger crowd. Then Asleep at the Wheel made it popular with the twanger crowd.

  • i wished all old people was cool has this lol

  • Heard this on XM the other night on a long drive through Arizona, and was blown away. That's some good music, and some talented fellas playing it. Thank God for XM!

  • thats right he played lead on the orginal commander cody version.

  • When Bill plays it, it's not a "cover"!

  • Damned good cover, one of the best I've heard!

  • That ain't no cover, son...Bill played on the original.

  • thank you ...and if you check the other videos , he does it way better than the original singer ...

  • It is a cover, son. Charlie Ryan did the original.
