  • Great stuff, took me a long time to find the title, great!

  • I think ' setteemezzo's comment sais it all, well said mate.

  • since I listen this song for the first time.... I liked it !!! Nice latin-Spanic story shows familly feith, Shame, Coraje and Gambling like life. JC Mtz

  • cockfighting will never die!!! viva los gallos!!

  • You will have to pry my Cock out of my cold dead hands!

    Viva Cock Fighting!

  • viva Los gallos bravos viva Tomas

  • Tom has so much heart, love this song, tho of course I love my free range roosters:), PETA readers, agree with other commenter that art isn't really about approving of what you are depicting, it's about capturing a moment of reality and life, or art imitating life, etc. Hilfri

  • All things considered the Fighting Cocks have a far better life than those force fed growth chemicals so they can't even walk to their doom. Bet the Bleeding Hearts don't think of that when the munch at Mickey D or KFC.

  • Love the song. Beautiful playing. Reminds me of Marty Robbins.

  • @senorpadre

I agree and it's also worth noting that both Marty and he made El Paso, TX their home.

  • So very sad. The poor rooster, exploited to fight to the death. Barbaric cruelty forced by human beings. However, the song is beautiful...speaks to the desperate situations of humans, and the deadly tragedy of forcing beautiful birds to fight.

  • @MsKelev shame on you saying their forced they love to kick ass

  • @MsKelev you could never understand them in a million yrs your loss

these birds are the bravest and most knoble of all birds and they are not forced to fight its what they live for

And their owners love them enoughto put up everything they have on their birds

  • Its a national sport televised in the phillippines, and in latin america, at least the rooster stands a fighting chance..,can the hypocrites here come into the "REAL" world, how many chickens die each day in the west, and you all eat them..,some people so far in denial.. it makes me sick.. brilliant song by tom

  • Tom Russell wrote a brilliant, controversial song that tells a story. I like this version, but I do have to say that Joe Ely has taken this song to the next level. Look for Ely's version from Italy in 98 for my favorite version.

  • I'm hungry for a drumstick.

  • Very cool. Love Tom Russell and this song is a tour de force. Check out a post about Gallo del Celo at the music blog Nightly Song.

  • Irish and drink , we have the lowest consumption per-capita of all of Europe !Check it out !

  • poor chickens we raise them...... then gut and eat them... I like it.

  • Gentlemen, on the count of three drop your cocks on the line and step back.

  • you bleeding heart cocksuckers need to go to the Barney the dinosaur videos. What a bunch of idiots

  • The fact he can write such a beautiful song about something as barbaric as cock fighting is proof(not that it's needed) of Toms enormous talent!!

  • So sad! This is a great tune though! Tom Russell is the best singer-songwriter of our time!

  • texas music. pendejos el esta hablando de Chihuahua

  • ConorSod, I'm sure that's what Tom had in mind when he wrote this. Search for Tom Russell on Letterman for a diff POV. And if you REALLY want to stir something up, mention "if the Alamo had had a back door..." Yeeha!

  • "and Americans and their ignornace..."

    yawn.

    Great, great song.

  • jkohler, get real. This is a Texas music classic. Song is probably older than you.

  • Very Immature P.O.V, if you actually listen to the lyrics you will learn that it has a lot more going on than just cock fighting. Its the story of one mans loyalty to his family, friendship, courage and ultimatley failure. And even if it had to do with cock fighting, its culture and you just have to deal with that, like the Spanish and Bulls, The Irish and Drink, and Americans and their ignornace, live and let live.

  • @ConorSod Very well said!!

  • @ConorSod

I'm sorry but I will not deal with the Spanish and bulls. The only way to deal with Bullfighting should be to ban it! You're xenophobic comments are disgusting(and what nationality do you think Tom is? Oh yeah that's right! He's American. I assume you consider him to be ignorant).

Oh and this songs about cockfighting! I'm not saying that's all it's about, but cockfighting features pretty prominently. If you don't agree then there's really no point debating with you!

  • @Broomeister lmao ....you ever think of the fact that you DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THESE THINGS?....do associate yourself with them and problem solved....

but people like you have to impose their point of view upon others and whine and moan because somone is doing womthign you dont like ......grow up and learn to MIND YOUR OWN FUCKIN BUISNESS.....i guarentee i have never told you how to raise your kid or how to live your life and i demand you extend me the same courtesy and keep your mouth shut

  • @ConorSod I have to agree. Its a hellava story about all of those things and i love the song. Not all americans are blind and and stupid tho. Im irish n we all got our story

  • Nothing like REAL TEXAS MUSIC.

    Long Live The Republic!!

  • Hey Texas Donkey

This ain't no Texas song... it's a godamn Norte California song. Listen to placenames... San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara.

  • Hey Fat friend you need to not talk in an insulting manner my direction. Tom may be an LA boy and the song may be set in that area but he is one of the premiere proponents of Texas Music. He also lives in El Paso. If you took your head out of your fat ass you might know that.

  • Take a chill pill, little buddy. The song IS all about old norte California, not your precious Texas Republic. That's all. I got no beef with you or your state. The best country music (outlaw highbilly) comes from your area. Sit back down and have another Lone Star, friend.

  • I can not find the song by Tom Russell called Walking on the Moon ,I would love to have it

  • I saw Tom Russel Live in London Tuesday this week, a fantastic show.

Russel is not only a great songwriter, he is also a great entertainer.

His Dylan impersonation was right on target.

    Allfader

  • this song is a masterpiece!

  • Wow, this is my first hearing of Russell. That I recall. Started out hearing the "Who's gonna build your wall" there and just did some youtubing. Great singer, writer and story teller.

  • This is my first time seeing Tom Russell and i like his version of this song although i prefer Joe Ely's interpretation. I'm looking forward to seeing Russell perform live for the first time next week at Joe's Pub. Hopefully, i'll get some good video!

  • Tom is number one !!!

  • We miss Tom Russell and Andrew Hardin here in Europe. We hope they will come back soon to give a great show again like they did a few years ago.

  • Yeah, Tom can write a damn good song. Thanks for this post.

  • Cowboy Real is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard.Russell is the most under rated performer in the world today.

  • Awesome! Tom Russell is a living legend!

  • Russell Rocks! I hear Marty Robbins smiling!

  • hell fire, this is the best

  • great songwriter and performer! anyone have the lyrics and or video clip of his song, "box of visions" that he recorded with Iris Dement? i'd love to see it.

  • I want to thank Tom Russell and Michael Martin for the great performance in Groningen the Netherlands on thursday 13 december

  • I saw these two at a concert in someone's house several years ago. They were like a couple of travelling minstrals dropping by, singing tunes, moving on. Andrew Hardin is a master guitarist.

  • When I saw Tom last year, he did this thing with his eyes when he sang the bit "He had one eye rolling crazy in his head".... We all just about fell off our chairs.

If you get a chance to see Tom live... don't pass it up. It is always a great show.

  • Great song Tom, loved you live in Wales at Britania Inn, love you on this video, what a duo you and Andrew are, keep up the great writing, and thanks for your new one, "Who's Gonna build your wall" its fantastic.

  • Great! I saw Tom & Andrew twice some years ago in a pub in Brussels. Tom is a fantastic storyteller, Andrew a superb acoustic guitarplayer.

  • Russell sings from the heart, he has such feeling for the songs that he delivers, his emotion is strong, his voice intense..And Andrew plays a beautiful guitar...they sound great on this song...LOVE it.

    ...........................peace, Randy

  • Thanks ... Long time no hear

  • if yall like this see if you like "tonight we ride" by tom russell, one of my personal favorites

  • I love this song. Thanks for putting it up.

  • this is one of my favorite songs. I love every version of it Ive heard.

  • This is just a great great song, and Tom Russell is a great singer songwriter. And Joe Ely does this song even better!

  • great song and beautiful guitar accompaniments.

  • I always found this tune somehow amusing, though it's a very good song. I would think this is most likely the most epic and finest song ever written about a rooster. Love Anderews accompaniment, very tasteful and talented player.
