MSR makes the worst, most over priced stoves and camping gear of any company. Their products are all made with parts designed to break so you can continue buying replacements same as American cars. If you want a real honest to god stove get an optimus nova or primus omnifuel, those are all metal not crappy plastic plungers.
You lit the stove too early. Let SOME fuel into the cup then CLOSE the valve. Light that fuel and let it burn. That will heat up the generator pipe (which vaporizes the liquid fuel before it gets out of the jet). Once that burns for 30-45 seconds open the valve a little bit and the blue flame should start with a couple minor flair ups.

You buy the bottle separately. They have 20 and 30 oz. I believe.
