  • I agree, @evilnoz51, @diodimov. Lane is irreplaceable, but saying the band should have broken up because he died is unfair to the rest of the band.

  • i just listened to duvall sing this in a 2010 clip and gave him a lot of credit for trying to walk in jesus' sandals. i take back everything i said after listening to this FUCKING MASTERPIECE! Layne is an Angel with an AirRaid Siren of a Voice

  • I always love the way so many people who never met Layne, and were probably 5 years old last time he toured with Chains, seem to know his wishes. NO ONE can replace Layne, but don't blame Duvall. He's a good vocalist, and is helping Jerry, Sean, and Mike make some good music. I trust Jerry, Sean, and Mike's opinion over what the band should do over some anonymous person on the net.

  • did she call me naaaaaaaaaaaame....!!!

i think it's gonna raaaaaaaaaain..... oh..!! when i fucking die..!!!!

  • there will never be anyone with such an amazing voice

  • around 1.28 when he breaks out into the first chorus is just a pure magic

  • I hope it doesn't rain TOO much when I die. I don't want it to wash all the grunge away.

  • @tailgunnerjoe1 Grunge comes with rain man!

  • this is great, duvall is annoying

  • this song is addicting i keep coming for more and more

  • I hope more people post videos of Alice.....so good.

  • its mike myers joined after he made waynes world

  • who is playing bass here? mike starr or inez?

  • @gothicaloticaxx Starr. Inez joined later in the spring when they returned from South America.

  • @05BabyReg It's Inez on bass. Stop spreading false info.

  • Amazing man, amazing voice, amazing band. What I would give to have been front row at an AiC show, instead of watching them on YouTube wishing I was there.

  • The little twist he puts on the chorus at 2:27 makes me shiver, every damn time I hear it. God damn, this man was fucking brilliant.

  • DONT EVER TAKE SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • let's see you try and sing that william duvall.

  • god that voice

  • Layne at his best was brilliant. Layne at his worst was still brilliant. Layne that gorgeous guy with an earth shattering voice will always be treasured.

  • man no one can do what he did.. im sorry the new AIC is kool buts its just not layne staley : (

  • @Aarondog85 The new EVERYTHING sucks! Except the internet.

  • InternetS, excuse me.

  • ..fuck

  • was watching this from a 2010 or 2011 festival with Duvall, but sorry people, nothing to do, I dont think ANYONE in this planet can replace Layne and that fucking voice that comes from the deepest pits of hell itself man, what a singer, what a loss, what a great band, they should have stayed disbanded or get a fucking AMAZING vocalist, cause this duvall guy cant cut it...

  • @afoolisharrangement you're totally right... he wasn't singing but screaming his soul out to the world.

That's something you can't replace, no matter how much talent or dedication

  • @afoolisharrangement No one is trying to replace anyone. Alice in Chains will never be the same without Layne, and they aren't trying to be the same.

  • @afoolisharrangement As much as I completely agree with you, I think that was their intention. To find someone that will cut it, but not in Laynes place. They meant to make Jerry the frontman and have DuVall take jerry's old spot. With that being said, they also told the world that they werent going to continue under "Alice in Chains' because it wouldnt have been right.... Well... here they are.

  • @afoolisharrangement Dude Laynes dead...I wanna hear Alice in Chains.....yeah Layne was a beast!!!! But there was three other band members........if you died today would people quit life!!!

  • @afoolisharrangement I gotta agree, but disagree at the same time. AIC can never be the same without Layne when it comes to the old stuff, but the new album wasn't as bad as i expected. I think it's almost like a new group in a way. Slightly different style, but just as dark and heavy sounding

  • @afoolisharrangement No one is trying to replace Layne. AIC is a different band now, they aren't and won't ever be the same without Layne. But that doesn't mean the new sound can't be good on its own.

  • @afoolisharrangement The new band is shit, it's a fucking disgrace towards Layne's memory that they even started touring again.

  • i dont think you appreciate the bands choice for still being here and still giving their 100% , we all miss layne but YOU ARE NOT THE BAND to decide whether they should stay disbanded or get an "amazing" vocalist. They already got an amazing vocalist, its just that u wanna hear layne, we all do, well.. thats way you play this so please stop blaming it on duvall. Just enjoy and respect the music.

  • @afoolisharrangement Especially cause Layne was generally a badass. People were more authentic back then imo. Analog is a more realistic depiction of real life than digital is.

  • This is one of those songs I REALLY wish they had done unplugged.

This, Sea of Sorrow, and Damn That River would have been awesome.

  • Growl, Growl, rough rough lol

  • Comment removed

  • lol I can BARELY reach that pitch in that chorus, its fuckin rediculous...

  • 2:24 epic!

  • @Screeaaam This part can't get off of my mind!!

  • I would have been just under 4 months old when this was filmed.. strange that he's my favourite singer eh?

  • 2:24

  • well i was at the seattle fountain on 8-22-2011 for laynes b-day and it rained that day in august...

  • Brandon Boyd is alot similar to layne, deffnitly similar style

  • I've never heard music from a man so broken

  • I think I'm gonna diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeaiaiaii OOOH oooon this soooooooong....

  • weird would be if it didn't rained

  • Laymen, Chris, or Eddie? That is the question

  • @zackmcnelly Layne by far....

  • did she ready to know my frustration?? Layne rules what a vocal!!

  • Fuck Duvall.

  • i think its gonna raaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAINNNNNNN!!!! OHHH!! WHEN I DIE!

  • mi tema favorito el mejor de alice!!!!!!!!

  • Love this song

  • god damn

  • i would to see someone attempt to cover the vocals in this song, just to show how great layne truly was

  • @wolfedawg90 i dont think any vocalist would have balls to cover this song

  • da läuft es mir eiskalt den rücken runter !!!!!

  • @ArtificialRed1083

is there any problem banging her after she went nuts, or was she so high on crack by this time anyone could bang her whereas before she only fucked rock stars and first rate actors?

  • The things that sucks about watching these old videos is that the audio almost always sucks even when its "good" compared to todays videos. These videos dont do Layne any justice. At least we can hear how badass the instruments sound on some videos today.

  • @notavailableisnotava That's not true. The reason stuff sucks today is because it's all recorded digitally. Tape transferred to digital sounds much better. This video is an audience recording not a pro shot, that's why it's somewhat lacking. But I still like it.

  • What an AWESOME performance by Layne!

  • PRIME!!!

  • I'm glad the whole world isn't consumed by teeny boppers that have no idea that talent once existed. Yea maybe its biased because I grew up to this music, but even the few songs I like of this day and age, can't even compare to what ruled the late 80 early 90's.

  • I think by '93, when it came to songs like Love Hate Love or this, Layne was like FUCK! WHY DID I WRITE THIS??

  • @proximity1620 He still nailed them in 1993. 1991 was his best year in my opinion.

  • @ItHurtsWhenIPee100 91 was indeed his best year. He was still fresh, and all the smoking hadn't really damaged his voice too much. I wouldn't say he "nailed" them in 93 though.. His voice had changed a lot by that point, and he sang the songs differently so his voice could handle it. So, while he "nailed" them in the particular style he was singing, and it sounded great, it just wasn't the same. Nowhere near the energy, power, or conviction behind the voice.

  • @proximity1620 bullshit. 92 Layne simply can't be beat. He also became more melodic as he became more strung out, oddly enough.

  • @MrTufflong well 92 does come before 93...

  • powerfull man!!! the best singer hever!! A.I.C great band

  • one of the best songs in history of music. layne's the man. what a voice. greatest singer of all time.

  • Ironically, it is raining now. Miss you Layne and Mike, thank you for the badass music.

  • @Rookh13 wow how ironic I heard that ind of shit happens

  • @HighNflY jeeze dude chill. It doesn't happen very much in AZ. now let's make nice and not have one of those lameass youtube wars.

  • Layne Staley is one of the greatest rock vocalists of ALL-TIME! long live A.I.C.

  • I don't know how he could sing the song better than he did on the album... But he did it.

  • And did she call my naaaaaaaaaaaaame?????? I think its gona raiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin, ohhhhhhhhhhh when i diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Fucking amazing. That's all I can think when I hear Layne sing. His voice brings feelings and emotions in me that no other singer ever could.

  • Fucking powerful vocals. I don't know how he could sing in such way.

  • I hear it rains in Seattle lol

  • @lagmuncher ya it sucks

  • @Dimebomber Word, Alice is def one of my most influential bands for my music

  • Real fucking funny.

  • There was something so incredibly Sinister about Chains when Layne was around. They're still an excellent band live but they dirtiness and grime left after the Kansas City show in 96.

    Godammit i miss Layne Staley!

  • Best rock n roll singer ever, bottom line..... any questions????????????

  • @nmsualumni05 He is definetly up there, for sure way underrated!

  • @nmsualumni05 Yes... Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Maynard James Keenan, Robert Plant, the guy from Whitesnake who's name escaped me, Freddy Mercury, etc. I love Layne, but you can't say he is the best.

  • the best, no question, the best, second to none, best.

  • @SoWachuWan "the guy from Whitesnake" was David Coverdale, buddy.

  • @aicdethfan84 I know. I forgot his name when I wrote it....

  • @SoWachuWan Wow, actually he is way better than all that you have listed bud... Whitesnake? Really? hahaha

  • @nmsualumni05 I never said they were better. NEVER HAVE I SAID THAT.

  • @SoWachuWan honestly i like them all but none of them is better than layne vocally ,none of them could sing this song...eddie vedder doesnt have a range chris was freaking amazing in early 90 but now he cant hit this high notes, i like maynard but hes man in the box was horrible

  • @nmsualumni05 Chris Cornell, sorry I win.

  • @superdude13666 it's only your opinion

  • @superdude13666 Chris's vocal range is limitless. Birth Ritual......Enough Said \m/

  • @superdude13666 Not even close.

  • @nmsualumni05 NOPE !!!

  • @nmsualumni05 yeah. have you heard me sing?

  • @nmsualumni05 most def. he gives me the chills, even 20 yrs later

  • @nmsualumni05 the best but also the most underrated i just wish more ppl appreciate layne nd hes incredible talent .....i mean this guy is so talented its ridiculous

  • RIP Layne Staley

  • R.I.P Layne <3

  • greatest singing voice ever

  • Mike and Layne Rip!

  • Miss you already Mike!! Stay off the hard drugs friends. Smoke pot. Can't OD on that.

  • @polymorphously it's so sad... RIP Mike

  • Drugs r bad, but most rocketeer do them lol

  • @leekspitfire correction: SOME drugs are bad.

unfortunately, Layne did the bad ones...

  • them germans aint stupid or deaf u sucked idont feel bad now i can do this song better than they can really a lot of folks r full of themselves i can do it

  • @TheWezid lol

  • My Favorite AIC song by far.

  • April 5, 2002: Seattle experienced 0.05 inches of rain on the day Layne Staley died

    True Story....

  • O que é Kurt Cobain perto de Layne Staley? ;x

  • OMG...That awakes memories! Saw this gig (and the gig one day later in Cologne) backstage and I will never forget it! Awesome shows and Layne was one of the kindest and most interesting guys I've ever met! Rest in Peace xoxo

  • Anyone know if Mike Inez had joined by this time?

  • @rocknroll112345 Yes he did!

  • This vid is badass.. but I am cracking up at all the sentimental comments about it raining when Layne died. IT'S FKIN SEATTLE IN APRIL; OF COURSE IT RAINED!

  • @aggrolounge what a champ

  • @aggrolounge Yeah i get what youre sayin, but your comment is still lame.

  • what a fucking voice

  • Seattle experienced 0.05 inches of rain on the day Layne Staley died

  • I'mma just one of those that "flew over the coockoo's nest" I guess...

  • sorry 2:26

  • love the little changeup in the chorus at 2:33. twas awesome.

  • @ggiwindruid The part where he says "I think it's gonna rain"? I liked that part, It was at 2:23 though.

  • Comment removed

  • ...i think my face is melting

  • god damn he was the whole package, looks, talent, etc, such a shame he died. would love to go back in time & shoot the person who gave layne his first hit of heroin. would have loved to see him live, hes singing is such an inspiration & yeah i love the new alice & have total tespect for them, they are awesome live. but layne was the reason i loved the band to begin with.

  • @shianca10 Layne's father is the one who started him on drugs. Fucked up that he is still alive out there somewhere. Drugs made his lyrics at its most passionate, but it would have been nicer if he had quit after 1993.

  • It was fucking pouring when Layne died!!! best vocals ever

  • what makes this song really sad is that it did rain when Layne died.

  • this is so illusional. sadly missed...

  • aic will never die, aic forever

  • miss ya layne

  • This is a great live performance of Layne singing "Rain When I Die." Just classic Alice. And for the record, it did rain in Seattle on the day when this beautiful spirit died.

  • @socalartgal ''Coincidentally, Seattle experienced 0.05 inches of rain on the day Layne Staley died, something that was sung about in "Rain When I Die".[37] '' WIKIPEDIA (ENCYCLOPEDIA)

  • @srekazinskas fuck i remeber that day. proud to be from there. makes me feel like i was just a little closer to him than other people ya know

  • i call your name all day long layne

  • Ahhhh yeah, one of my classic favs...Layne pours his soul into it.

  • i just heard this song for the first time and now its my second fav chains song behind nutshell

  • Didnt Mike Inez write this song

  • @GRUNGEisrealmusic No, he was still with Ozzy when Dirt came out.

  • i won't listen to AIC anymore...not without Layne. I wish they had called the band something else.

  • @leafgrrl Black gives way to blue is a great album and Duvall`s voice fits perfectly is like Layne singing trough him I recomend you to take a listen to it

  • @rapuncelinchains how old were you in 1991? I'll bet you're a kid and that explains your response to my comment.

  • @leafgrrl Love for music comes from the heart men, also from the ears and sometimes from the brain, but never from your age, I was a year old but I don`t give a shit, maybe being born at 1990 kept me away from being a madonna/nirvana or milli vanilli fan so...

  • @rapuncelinchains Layne is NOT singing thru Duvall .. I assure you .. If you knew anything about Layne, you'd know that to be absurd.

  • @leafgrrl AMEN!

  • @leafgrrl thats retarded.. layne is the greatest fucking singer ever.. period. however, jerry is a fucking amazing singer and guitarst and he wrote a shitload of alices stuff. its just like acdc.... jerry always wanted to stay in alice he never wanted to do anything else. theyre new stuff sounds just like alice therefore it would be absurd to change the name. layne was a kind man. and i think he would like the friends he spent most of his life with to go on and do what they love.

  • @leafgrrl i agree with you completely about wishing they had called the band something else. but it's not worth protesting the band. i bet if jerry came out with a band and called it something else you would be a lot more open to listening to them. i know i would. but you're right - it isnt alice in chains without layne.

  • @TheDanB99 agreed totally. INow that I think about I would listen to alot more of the "new AIC" if it was named different. I still like them but it's just not the same and it's sad because I will never again hear not only The greatest musical influence to me but the greatest vocalist :other than cornell:. Layne you are dearly missed. peace and love

  • wow, thanks for posting this!

  • i could tell u all how much i love this, but u wouldnt understand!

  • Long live Dirt

  • Layne Stayle...the voice of pain

  • Happy Birthday Layne!!

  • Greatness!!!

  • awesome band!!!!!!!

  • Layne. Best. Voice.Ever.Period.......this is right before his addiction got really f'in bad...he still looks semi healthy and his has teeth.....Gog Bless US All Who Keep This Beautiful Man's music Alive....share my fellow gen X'ERS....share this greatness with the children.....today's music's got to go......slow suicide's no way to go......'on a tuesday....in august...next week...Layne turns 43......
