@sabres397 The Sabres might've won that game if the goal was called off, or another Dallas star could've scored it, sure. But with home ice advantage, and easily the much more talented power house team, the Dallas Stars would've taken game 7. I'd put all my money, future income, and house on the Stars to take it at home.
the problem is when he shot the puck into the goalie he lost possesion. unless you an argue that he had possesion while the goallie was making the save. the rule at the time said you could not have a foot in th crease. Dumb ass rule but it was the rule and man teams were screwed out of a goal that year. So he shot the puc on goal goalie losing possesion when he got the rebound his foot was in the crease. When he regained possesion. SO no goal by the dumbass rule but it wa a bad rule
@squantotheboywonder At the time of the goal, No one (except for the deffending team) was aloud to be in the crease at any time for any reason. His foot was in the crease that gave him the edge to get the goal. Its suposed to be no goal
@x30xSabresFan even though only one foot was in the crease? i still say goal but thats my oppinion and thats what they called soooo... thanks for the info though lol
@squantotheboywonder Yes but at the time of the goal, goals were being called "no goal" because of only a single skate, it doesnt matter if only one foot was, at that time its NO GOAL
The NHL Made a rule change the next day as EVERY network was showing it and how it was suposed to be NO GOAL
Remember, they were more strict back then, now you can be in the crease when ever
They didnt change the rule because people didnt like it, they changed it because ppl were fucking idiots "like buffalo fans" and didnt understand the rule. no where in the rule book did it say you can not be in the crease Period. it said you had to have possesion of the puck first to enter and to play it. he never lost possesion to buffalo its a good goal. end of story.
This play was clearly the single play that changed the "in the crease" rule. How many f'n goals got waved off because some guys lace was in the crease on the opposite side of the net when a puck went in back in those days? Who can't agree that that rule was so brutal to the game.
@bodeyc ok WE suck? that was the Stars only stanley cup win that shouldn't have happened. The rule was that If the player enters the crease prior to the puck and scores, then the goal doesn't count. After Brett Hull scored his goal, some memo that no one had ever heard of was passed to legalize the goal. The goal should not have counted. Now I'm not saying that the Stars might not have won it later on, but what's the point of winning a championship if your not gonna do it the right way?
@Chiefsplayr17 -- 12 years later -- and you Buffalo fans (and other apologists) can't seem to understand the definition of possession. A player in possession of the puck was allowed to precede the puck into the crease. Hull kicked the puck (intentionally) and his pivot preceded the puck into the crease, all the while, Hull maintained possession. It is not a hard call to understand if you actually READ the rule book for the 98-99 season which defined WHAT CONSTITUTED POSSESSION.
@SelfAccountable Do your reasearch dude. The original ruling was that if the player enters the crease when the puck is not also in the crease, then it was no goal. Brett Hull went into the crease when the puck was not in the crease. After this game, they passed some random memo that was never seen before saying that it was suddenly OK to do what he did. You tell me to read the rule book for 98-99? Read anything before then. The rule was randomly changed and cost everyone a good year of hockey.
@Chiefsplayr17 I did my research on it (over a decade ago) and am not stuck in some b.s. revisionist/apologist alternate history of Buffalo. Go read the official rulebook for 1998/1999 and read specifically about how a player in possession of the puck is allowed to enter the crease. The rules were NOT changed for this game, despite claims otherwise.
@Chiefsplayr17 A good year of hockey? I'm sorry but if you didn't know that 98-99 was one of the most explosive seasons the NHL had since Gretzky days, then you're not a fan of hockey. The rule was actually stated backwards from what you said, and trust me I know the NHL rulebook cover to back and I'll argue that it was a goal that they were probably going to acquire anyways.
@blizzes08 You know this seasons Rule book. In 1999 no person (except for the deffending team) was aloud in the Goaltenders crease at any time for any reason. His foot was in the crease and is sorry WAS suposed to be No Goal.
They changed that rule the next day to what it is now
@x30xSabresFan I knew the rule book then too dude. I knew that it wasn't a goal, but regardless they were going to win because the Stars were the better team.
haha, what if sabre's fans weren't a bunch of whiners. Thats hockey, Buffalo shouldn't have put themselves in that situation. Stars outplayed them and won. Get over it.
I love all the comments saying something about the rules. it's funny because they say you don't know the rules, but you do. to all you idiots, back in the day you couldn't be in the crease when you scored. the rule changed a few years ago
@mybaseballlife and everyone knows they ALWAYS get the call right in hockey. you guys are something else man. like i said before, buffalo put themselves in that situation.
I know a perfect one for baseball. It shows the 2003 ALCS when Pedro Martinez was left in the game too long and the Red Sox blew that lead in Game 7 against the Yankees. "What if Grady Little used his head"? Lol.

@neely7878 Wrong. The rule stated that a player with possession is allowed in. Hull obviously had possession since he was the shooter. The goals that were disallowed that year were when one player was shooting while another had a toe in the crease. Hull's goal was not the same. People need to realize that. Its been 11 years already.

I dont know why sabres fans still whine. Like first of all it was 11 years ago, second of all they were down in the series 3-2 wasnt looking good for them anyways. And early in the game hasek let in a horrible short side goal, maybe if he never let that in they wouldve won the game bring it to 7

Besides, it wasn't just Sabres fans who were pissed about the goal, it was a lot of other fans too. NHL fucked up during the biggest game of the year.
man Being from buffalo and forever a Sabres and BIlls fan my whole life it feels so depressing knowing that every heartwrenching and soul twisting moment always happens to you. Yet you never know what its like to feel the elation of seeing your team win it all. You need some serious stones to love Buffalo man. And people let it go it was 11 years ago, we shoulda won a cup between then and now but did we? no.
We did, Tallinder and Lydman are gone. And we swapped them for EVEN WORSE DEFENSEMEN.
Leopold is a joke, Montador is the worst defenseman I have EVER laid eyes on (painfully so), Miller has no help whatsoever, we have a cheap tightly pocketed GM who makes the most boneheaded decisions. It's a mess here.
What should happen is, trade one of the big forwards (Vanek, Pomminville, and Roy) and get a defensemen that can actually skate. Ive always liked buffalo but this year is going to be a rough year for them if their manager doesnt grow some balls.
@Oldschoolhockey91 the other day a friend told me that in terms of sports, buffalo has the biggest fan base. too bad our teams blow. *cough cough* bills. and sabres are average at most. i can't see us winning a major championship any time soon.
@Oldschoolhockey91 Being from Pittsburgh I could never relate. I've seen 3 Cups a winter classic, and 2 SB's. I will never know your pain, but when you do win, I will cheer for you, and with you, Unless it's against Pittsburgh...lol
I personally HATE the Sabres from Philly, I HATE your fans, but I at least have to respect them, they're not fucking bandwagoners like the Blackcocks and the Shitsburgh Pussies, they're loyal, they show up to the arena for away games in the playoffs, you're just like us in Philly, passionate about sports.
@sabresrule0029 If it was illegal, then I wouldnt tell you to get over it. Id be pissed too. Id feel robbed big time. But it was legal and its been explained over and over for 11 years now. Sabres fans dont want to see past that one shot where Hull's foot is in the crease. They dont wanna go further than that and realize the actual facts nd the actual rule. It wasnt as black and white as it seemed.
@sabresrule0029 You can think Bobby was better thats fine. Maybe he was. But come on man. Brett doesnt brag about it all the time. I rarely, if ever hear about it from him. If you watched his HOF speech too, you would know how gracious and appreciative he really is. People wanna act like he's arrogant just because he tells it like it is.He was a great personality and the game misses him. He planted his foot after kicking it to his stick.Thats possession. He was the shooter. That makes it legal.
Anybody who still thinks the goal should not have counted has been in the dark for 11 years now. Do yourselves a favour and educate yourselves. It was a goal. These are facts Im stating. The crease rule was made so a player "OTHER THAN THE SHOOTER" cannot interfere with the goalie and his crease. The shooter was allowed to enter. As we can all see, Hull was the shooter. He had the puck himself. Its blck and white and theres no argument. Plus the puck already entered the crease, making it in play.
"Unless the puck is in the goal crease area, a player of the attacking side may not stand in the goal crease. If a player has entered the crease prior to the puck, and subsequently the puck should enter the net while such conditions prevail, the apparent goal shall not be allowed."
@simone071 Except fot he fact that the player with the puck ( the shooter ) is exempt. In which case, Brett Hull was the shooter. Not to mention, the puck did enter the crease already, making the crease in play. It bounced out, but to who ? Brett Hull. He had possession and he was the shooter. That was a rule and thats how its been explained over and over. You cant compare it to other goals that were called back where one player was in the crease and a 2nd player shot the puck.Totally different.
@sabresrule0029 Ha ha. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Brett has more goals than Bobby, more points than Bobby, and more Cups than Bobby. You may not like him, and you likely hate him even more because he scored that goal. But you cant deny how great he was. Bobby was great aswell but dont be saying Brett will never live up to his name. Brett was great.
@Beatlemania2971 It was a goal. The reason is that Hull was the shooter himself. That year, the shooter was allowed a foot in the crease. The difference was that a player other than the shooter was not allowed a foot in before the puck entered because goalies were complaining about interference. This goal was not the same. Not to mention, the puck did enter the crease already. Good goal. Bad rule.
I think it's funny how in every single real look at this goal (not in Buffalo) it's considered a goal but Buffalo's just mad becuase Dallas killed them like 2 times in the Super Bowl and then the Stanley Cup hahahaha I think it was like 52-17 in one Super Bowl hhaahahahahah
To be honest, i believe it was an infraction, but I do believe that the stars would have won the cup anyways. Isn't it ironical that later on both Hull and Hasek won it all again in Detroit?
@sabresrule0029 just because we won the cup 40 years ago deosn't mean we dont want it just as bad as sabres fans do, besides, the sabres have some talent, they r gonna win it eventually. unlike boston, who will never win, cuz ourowners dont want 2 spend any money on new guys, but pay that oaf chara the big bucks
@semgirl4 yeah the bruins made it far alright, ' HEY LUCIC LETS WE GOT THIS SERIES"-chara "nah i would rather roll over like a bunch of stupid pussies"-lucic
@semgirl4@semgirl4 yeah the bruins made it far alright, ' HEY LUCIC LETS WE GOT THIS SERIES, WERE UP 3-0"-chara "nah i would rather roll over like a bunch of stupid pussies"-lucic
@sabresrule0029 i no how u feel i live in boston, we havnt been to a stanley cup since 1990 (in which we got pwned) all im saying is that u just have to let some things things go.
@sabresrule0029 it was the right call, dallas won, buffalo lost, but it doesnt matter cuz this was 11 years ago, wud u still be bragging about this if u won, no, so y r u still complaining?
not a sabres fan here, but that goal under league rule should not have counted or why the hell would the NHL change the rule 2 days after it, think people
heres one, what if the nhl knew how to run the league, history will be made(one day).
wtf r u looking at?! its CLEARLY not a goal! rule was no foot allowed in the crease and Hull has his foot in the crease. they called everything and reviewed everything that year but apparently not for a clear series decider as this 1
how about he didnt cheat...he tried to make a goal, yea at the time this goal was illegal but its not like putting a skate in the crease changes how you make a goal like that...so it not cheating! this is dumb
@tombradychampion12 Because they were 100% screwed over by this busch league call. If you were a German, would you say the Jews need to stop whining about the Holocaust in 1956?
@tombradychampion12 Because they were 100% screwed over by this busch league call. If you were a German, would you say the Jews need to stop whining about the Holocaust in 1956?
@tombradychampion12 Im not a sabres fan by any means but that wasnt a goal...His Skate was in the crease and i dont know if you know anthing about hockey but that means that that isnt a goal
@Razgriz100000 i dont know if you can read im know it wasnt a goal but sabres and bills fans are the biggest whiners ever all im saying is whats done is done
dallas has their name on the cup and buffalo doesnt and never will just like bills for superbowls. buffalo had four shots and the screwed up everyone and i bet the fans will blame it on the refs no matter what. pc out im done with this whine fest
@CROSBY871487 Well if you know it wasnt a goal then u would understand that they have a reason to complain, and judging by your name, im sure you know all about whiners
@tombradychampion12 whats that supposed to win, its not supposed to be a goal its the same as taking the puck and throwing it both break rules both shouldnt count

Leopold is a joke, Montador is the worst defenseman I have EVER laid eyes on (painfully so), Miller has no help whatsoever, we have a cheap tightly pocketed GM who makes the most boneheaded decisions. It's a mess here.
Oldschoolhockey91 1 year ago
@Oldschoolhockey91 your exactly right.

But the city of Chicago has won
6 NBA Titles (Bulls)
1 Super Bowl (Bears)
4 Stanley Cups (Hawks)
2 World Series (Cubs)
They have championships at least, Buffalo has none
Oldschoolhockey91 8 months ago
@Oldschoolhockey91 whitesox won too, but that's not the point.

It wasnt as black and white as it seemed.
tjcurrie 1 year ago
@sabresrule0029 You can think Bobby was better thats fine. Maybe he was. But come on man. Brett doesnt brag about it all the time. I rarely, if ever hear about it from him. If you watched his HOF speech too, you would know how gracious and appreciative he really is. People wanna act like he's arrogant just because he tells it like it is.He was a great personality and the game misses him. He planted his foot after kicking it to his stick.Thats possession. He was the shooter. That makes it legal.

Quite possibly one of the best moments on hockey

WTH he didnt cheat?!!!!!!!?!
JustinMovalli20 1 year ago
Anybody who still thinks the goal should not have counted has been in the dark for 11 years now. Do yourselves a favour and educate yourselves. It was a goal. These are facts Im stating. The crease rule was made so a player "OTHER THAN THE SHOOTER" cannot interfere with the goalie and his crease. The shooter was allowed to enter. As we can all see, Hull was the shooter. He had the puck himself. Its blck and white and theres no argument. Plus the puck already entered the crease, making it in play.
tjcurrie 1 year ago
@tjcurrie
get your facts straight:
"Unless the puck is in the goal crease area, a player of the attacking side may not stand in the goal crease. If a player has entered the crease prior to the puck, and subsequently the puck should enter the net while such conditions prevail, the apparent goal shall not be allowed."
simone071 1 year ago
@simone071 Except fot he fact that the player with the puck ( the shooter ) is exempt. In which case, Brett Hull was the shooter. Not to mention, the puck did enter the crease already, making the crease in play. It bounced out, but to who ? Brett Hull. He had possession and he was the shooter. That was a rule and thats how its been explained over and over. You cant compare it to other goals that were called back where one player was in the crease and a 2nd player shot the puck.Totally different.
tjcurrie 1 year ago
@sabresrule0029 Ha ha. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Brett has more goals than Bobby, more points than Bobby, and more Cups than Bobby. You may not like him, and you likely hate him even more because he scored that goal. But you cant deny how great he was. Bobby was great aswell but dont be saying Brett will never live up to his name. Brett was great.
tjcurrie 1 year ago
@Beatlemania2971 It was a goal. The reason is that Hull was the shooter himself. That year, the shooter was allowed a foot in the crease. The difference was that a player other than the shooter was not allowed a foot in before the puck entered because goalies were complaining about interference. This goal was not the same. Not to mention, the puck did enter the crease already. Good goal. Bad rule.
tjcurrie 1 year ago
what software did you use to create this? i mean to play it backwards!
Pgcito 1 year ago
I think it's funny how in every single real look at this goal (not in Buffalo) it's considered a goal but Buffalo's just mad becuase Dallas killed them like 2 times in the Super Bowl and then the Stanley Cup hahahaha I think it was like 52-17 in one Super Bowl hhaahahahahah
