Bonjour, vous aimez les sixties ? écoutez et podcastez mon émission "le super son des 60's" sur le site de plumfm. You like the 60's ? please, listen and podcast my broadcast "le super son des 60's", connect to "plumfm". Salut et faites gaffe au rock and roll.
A great track, introducing the band to a whole new audience, via that TalkTalk advert/X-Factor connection. I still haven't listened to Petula Clark's version. i've been meaning to all year lol
I didn't realize until this week that Alex was SO YOUNG when he did all of this. I mean, heck, he had peaked before he was 20. There was a certain sound back then, groups like the Standells, Swinging Medallians, Archie Bell, Sir Douglas, Los Bravos, Shadows of Knight ("Gloria") a kind of party music which was like its own genre. Not exactly R&B or British Invasion stuff, but just kick ass good time music.
Alex still looks and sounds as great as ever -I was knocked out when I heard him singing "The Letter" around 1967 when he was only 16 and I was MUCH younger-rock on Alex !-Donna
Thanks for this, wonderful! I have recently bought a still sealed 8-Track with all there hits including this gem. Great to see them in the wonderful 60's time!
I'm quite sure I've got all the same Box Tops/Penn (solo and backing)/Big Star/Chilton stuff. It is Chilton on those songs, not Penn. Penn has his own website, too. Write him.
Written by Wayne Carson Thompson along with "The Letter" and "She Knows How" from their 1967 LP "The Letter/Neon Rainbow" on which songwriter and Box Tops producer Dan Penn sings lead on those and most other tracks. In my opinion you only definitely hear Chilton singing lead on "Happy Times", "I Pray for Rain" and on the CD "Turn on a Dream". Listen to those and his sol stuff and you can't fail to hear the difference. Chilton simply could never sing in a very deep voice like Penn.
I was thinking about going to see them last year because I had a wicked crush on Alex when I was a kid but when I heard he treats his fans like crap,I decided against it.Heard and read feedback from alot of fans saying that about him.Its a shame to treat the people that made you, your fans, buying your records, buying your posters, going to your concerts and he thanks them by his attitude.
You would have been very dissapointed. I question if it's Alex's voice on early recordings after hearing him live and there are others who think the voice on early recordings is Dan Penn out of Muscle Shoals, Al. where they recorded Cry Like A Baby. Dan Penn co-wrote Cry along with Spooner Oldham both from Muscle Shoals. Spooner also wrote I'm Your Puppet. So there's a Shoals connection for sure and if you'll check out Dan Penn on Youtube you may feel the same as some others.
Only it was producer Dan Penn who sang lead on the record. Listen to their respective solo versions of any Box Tops song to discover the truth. Chilton still can't sing in a deep voice like that. There's not one song on his solo LPs where he does.
Yep he would have no choice but to sing lead on tour so he obviously did but I stand by my comment, having all the Boxtops and Dan Penn (who wrote or co-wrote many songs for them) stuff and having compared the respective versions, on most major tracks i.e. the singles it's certainly not Chilton singing but Penn. Listen to the odd cheap filler track and you'll hear Chilton let loose.
Paul Westerberg copped the melody of this tune for the Replacements song "Rock and Roll Ghost" from the album "Don't Tell A Soul" I like the 2 uneasy chicks at the very end.
FANTASTIC song...Alex Chilton is MISSED :( r.i.p

Also - While Penn did do early work at FAME Studios in Alabama, Tops records were cut at American Studios in Memphis......

Actually Alex is very rude and you may want to do a little research on that voice. I also believe it's Dan Penn's.

Do a search for "Cry Like A Baby" . . . one of my Box Tops favorites. Love the "Joe South" guitar licks on it.

I think Reggie Young is playing guitar on that.
