  • FANTASTIC song...Alex Chilton is MISSED :( r.i.p

  • I love this song, thank you for posting!

  • My second favorite Box Tops song after The Letter

  • yes this song was one of my preference thanks beyondthebeat for this memories

  • Did Alex write this or co-write..? Beautiful song.

  • His light burned bright.

  • A great track, introducing the band to a whole new audience, via that TalkTalk advert/X-Factor connection. I still haven't listened to Petula Clark's version. i've been meaning to all year lol

  • Ha ha ha ha ha hya the drummer is making fun of the playback by going crazy with his drumsticks. Very funny!

  • my fav boxtops song

  • Ring TALKTALK UK the internet and telephone service .. this is the music they use while they keep you on hold.. You just can't help singing it!

  • I didn't realize until this week that Alex was SO YOUNG when he did all of this. I mean, heck, he had peaked before he was 20. There was a certain sound back then, groups like the Standells, Swinging Medallians, Archie Bell, Sir Douglas, Los Bravos, Shadows of Knight ("Gloria") a kind of party music which was like its own genre. Not exactly R&B or British Invasion stuff, but just kick ass good time music.

  • OK - I'd never heard this before I jammed on it in a pub...but a contemporary version ca't be a bad thing...see my channel!

  • amazing song..:))

  • I've Always Loved This Song!!! Rest In Peace Alex! Thankyou Gaz for sharing...Anita..

  • Always loved this song too! Thanks for posting! Thanks Alex. RIP

  • RIP Alex Chilton. Neon Rainbow. Sigh.

  • R.I.P. Alex Chilton

  • RIP, Alex. Thanks for the music and the memories. You will be missed.

  • Alex Chilton RIP

  • RIP Alex. And thanks.

  • I don't know who sings what, but it is certainly possible for a 16 year old to sing this ! and the letter.

  • Alex still looks and sounds as great as ever -I was knocked out when I heard him singing "The Letter" around 1967 when he was only 16 and I was MUCH younger-rock on Alex !-Donna

  • Thanks for this, wonderful! I have recently bought a still sealed 8-Track with all there hits including this gem. Great to see them in the wonderful 60's time!

  • Forgot all about this one, thanks for posting! Great group.

  • it reminds me NYC

  • Also - While Penn did do early work at FAME Studios in Alabama, Tops records were cut at American Studios in Memphis......

  • I'm quite sure I've got all the same Box Tops/Penn (solo and backing)/Big Star/Chilton stuff. It is Chilton on those songs, not Penn. Penn has his own website, too. Write him.

  • Written by Wayne Carson Thompson along with "The Letter" and "She Knows How" from their 1967 LP "The Letter/Neon Rainbow" on which songwriter and Box Tops producer Dan Penn sings lead on those and most other tracks. In my opinion you only definitely hear Chilton singing lead on "Happy Times", "I Pray for Rain" and on the CD "Turn on a Dream". Listen to those and his sol stuff and you can't fail to hear the difference. Chilton simply could never sing in a very deep voice like Penn.

  • Actually Alex is very rude and you may want to do a little research on that voice. I also believe it's Dan Penn's.

  • I was thinking about going to see them last year because I had a wicked crush on Alex when I was a kid but when I heard he treats his fans like crap,I decided against it.Heard and read feedback from alot of fans saying that about him.Its a shame to treat the people that made you, your fans, buying your records, buying your posters, going to your concerts and he thanks them by his attitude.

  • Dawn, I was very dissapointed meeting him. Very rude to his fans.

  • You would have been very dissapointed. I question if it's Alex's voice on early recordings after hearing him live and there are others who think the voice on early recordings is Dan Penn out of Muscle Shoals, Al. where they recorded Cry Like A Baby. Dan Penn co-wrote Cry along with Spooner Oldham both from Muscle Shoals. Spooner also wrote I'm Your Puppet. So there's a Shoals connection for sure and if you'll check out Dan Penn on Youtube you may feel the same as some others.

  • perhaps it was a bad day, he was cool with me.

  • People expect too much from celeds anyway. They are just humans.

  • Definitely one of the best!!!

  • Chilton rules. And a real gentleman to boot.

  • Only it was producer Dan Penn who sang lead on the record. Listen to their respective solo versions of any Box Tops song to discover the truth. Chilton still can't sing in a deep voice like that. There's not one song on his solo LPs where he does.

  • i saw the box tops in 1967 and it was Chilton singing and not Dan Penn.

  • Yep he would have no choice but to sing lead on tour so he obviously did but I stand by my comment, having all the Boxtops and Dan Penn (who wrote or co-wrote many songs for them) stuff and having compared the respective versions, on most major tracks i.e. the singles it's certainly not Chilton singing but Penn. Listen to the odd cheap filler track and you'll hear Chilton let loose.

  • He was like 16 when he sang this song

  • Look at thoe's beautiful

    "VOX" Super Beatle Amps!

    They dont make them

    like that anymore..

    so beautiful.

  • Paul Westerberg copped the melody of this tune for the Replacements song "Rock and Roll Ghost" from the album "Don't Tell A Soul" I like the 2 uneasy chicks at the very end.

  • Very pretty song I first heard this song was in 1969 but never saw the video you don't hear there southern accent

  • dummer acting the shit lol 1 22-1 28

  • Do a search for "Cry Like A Baby" . . . one of my Box Tops favorites. Love the "Joe South" guitar licks on it.

  • I think Reggie Young is playing guitar on that.

  • He is.

  • Only ever heard The Letter. THANKS for this! It is very much of its time: Jim Morrisson-esque lyrics but without the World-weariness of The Doors.

  • GREAT,great,great!

  • Great song!

  • Beyondthebeat,thanks for this old,but great memory.Nuff Said

  • Long time, One of my favorites back then.
