"My technique is laughable at times. I have developed a style of my own, I suppose, which creeps around. I don't have to have too much technique for it. I've developed the parts of my technique that are useful to me. I'll never be a very fast guitar player. I don't really know what to say about my style. There's always a melodic intent in there." - David Gilmour
David's voice in Comfortably Numb has been the greatest influence on my songwriting. Even in the chorus of my latest single which just came out a few days ago, you can hear the influence pretty clearly. If you like to listen, click my name.
That lady's and gent's is how to play a guitar..it's not just played it's caressed...it's loved..it's almost religious...the singer's ain't bad neither...love the lad dancing in the audience is he into it or what? all in all...."BRILLIANT"..
@conflictman03 Dont have to mention him Mate, he will always be in the hearts of us all. He'll never be forgotten, you know that dont you? Take Care Mate.
@Blueeys200 I have watched a few different videos of David Gilmour singing this tune at different concerts and this is definitely one of the best performances I've heard. His voice must have been in perfect shape that night.
When I hear these solos, I always get tears in my eyes, because these solos are so freaking awesome and beautiful and makes you feel happy, this is a kind of drug for me.
David Gilmour, David Bowie, Roger Waters, ... made part of our generation, who gives us impulses when we were young. There is no god. There 're is only one life and lots of humans who can influence us.
Did we all forget Duane allman? Now that,s one bad ass axe player!! Just listen to Allman bros.Live at the Fillmore. Duane and Dicky betts kicked major ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@woodyinthevalley Dave Gilmour is THE greatest guitarist of all time bar none, and the solo on this is THE BEST he has EVER done. This is just another interpretation of possibly the best Floyd track ever made. He has'nt messed around with it, just put an amazing edge on it. Take Care Eh?
@mr1168726 so what if Jimi didnt live long enough. if david gilmour had died in 1972 and Jimi had lived on would you still say the same thing. Gilmour has had practice over the last 40 years, meanwhile Jimi has not.
@mr1168726 I wouldn't go with that. Yes Gilmour is extremely talented but outplay Clapton? NO and certainly not as good as Page. Remember what made these people famous. Page and Clapton were the motivating factors in Supergroups where as Gilmour joined a Supergroup. He is awesome but he only ranked number 82 in the top 100 guitarists. Although in that list there were several less deserving players. Hendrix was overrated imho. And all of that is just that, my opinion. Peace,
@killaoflimmus I think it's impossible when talking of Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Gilmour, etc. to be able to say who's the best. I was never a big fan of Hendrix but can see he was way beyond anyone at the time. In terms of sheer expression, I think Gilmour is just incredible. A simple technique, compared to some but who cares? Music is meant to move. Love Clapton, though he went very commercial. Jimmy Page is probably my favourite. A sloppy player live, sometimes but still amazing.
@capricious71 I think that's a good view mate. I do agree with you most of it anyway. Page was sloppy sometimes, but he wrote the songs that people tried to emulate. Clapton similarly so. These guys are the foundation stones and nothing can change that and Gilmour is by no means a second rate guitarist I just think the other poster has taken a very narrow minded view. They are all to be enjoyed. And let's face it, how often these days do we get a guitar solo in a track ? Never. So sad.
@mr1168726 Then you are very narrow minded because you only seem to mention Green/Gallagher. What about Ry Cooder? Jeff Beck? You are missing out and name dropping doesn't impress me. Mark Knopfler is an excellent guitarist and so to was Gary Moore. Snowy White is another and so is Hank Marvin. Look beyond the names that you seem to have limited your listening to. Oh, nearly forgot to mention Justin Hawkins before his drug fest, he showed real promise.
@mr1168726 Wasn't knocking him mate, but he's not the be all and end all of great guitarists. I am in my 40's so not sure how you'd know who I've seen live........!!!
@mr1168726 I'm not commenting on he skill as a guitarist, I am talking about singing the lead melody as a harmony. Its a structural thing and it sounds awefull in my opinion.
@woodyinthevalley Fair enough Mate, But Roger Waters is nothing without Dave Gilmour, Wright & Mason. They all contributed greatly to the "Floyd" sound. Nothing can/ or will ever replace that.Seen most of the Floyd concerts over the last 40 years, and individually, none of them can create that on their own. Shame, but it's all over now. Who can ever replace them? Take Care Eh?
I would like to take this time to thank the Universe for all the random and magical set of events that has led and also given me the ability to hear and experience this...........
@horseshoerhays1 - Life is not a set of random events. God is the great 'I Am", and has set everything in motion at creqation with a plan, allows and has a reason for every event in everyone's life- including yours. He loves you, and has sent His Son into time and space to die for your sins so that you might gain eternal life. "No greater love has a man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
@MrTelejohn Dying is easy. Anyone can die. It's *living* that is hard. All this talk of gods and death... a Universe of wonder all around us, and all some people can think up to do with their time is reject it.
But: "There are more things in heaven and earth... than are dreamt of in your philosophy." I'll take a random Universe that churns out Bowies and Gilmours (and me's and you's) over grim denial any day.
You want holy? Hit 'Play' again. *This* is holy. This is holy. This is...
I am not the greatest fan of Bowie but he nailed this track, his voice suited this classic Floyd track to perfection. This will be mp3'd and on my player within the next 15 mins!
I think this is a great version of a classic. Then I wouldn't like for mr Bowie to become a permanent member of Pink Floyd or so. It was different, interesting, too good to lose, though not good enough to keep. That said I mr Waters may be more legendary than a perfect match for this song too. Not sure who would do the Waters part most justice, actually...
i do not say anything about his strat sound, its amaizing, but it would be 10 times better if he would use a gibson, it has a fuller tone and sounds way better with this type of music
@dullath I feel ya man, easy there. Im just a teenage kid learnin to love this old music at last, I just feel like if say Ozzy Osborne sang light my fire or Freddie Mercury was touring with ccr it just wouldn't have felt right. No Disrespect here at all but I feel that it's just sort of completly random. Thats all I meant, no disrespect and your right man.
@Doors067 teen here as well but I agree with dullath on this. Gilmour asked Bowie to come and do this song and he even asked him to change it up. I honestly listen to this version more than the original because of the change in rogers parts, I think Bowie makes it sound very intense which I really like. We all have opinions though.
@Doors067 and usually they are. can't they just have some fun together? for one bloody song????? omgosh!!! so many people with nasty comments - and yours isn't nasty, so not you- you ought to try to not be so negative.
yeah- the second verse you can clearly hear the harmony, but i believe the recording to be accurate-the listening experience is subjective and i totally respect your view, peace
it doesnt work-i can hear what bowie tried to do but its a minor harmony -it needs the lower minor voice to work...cant believe bowie didnt suss it before...i fuckin luv gilmour, fuckin luv bowie , fuckin luv this song.but this version aint right.....fuck it should be the best ever......shoulda done it in the late 70's.....peace
@SuperKinevil Well its possible that the recording didnt do it full justice because on some headphones you can clearly hear the low harmony sung by Richard Wright. Either way I love it!
Okay, I love both Bowie and Gilmour, but NOT the two of them together on stage. Bowie shouldn't sing this. He did quite nice version of "See Emily Play" though.
omg the goosebumps! i think i would actually have died if i had seen this live, i wouldn't be able to handle such emotion and..well...pure awesomeness!!!
This is fantastic - I wish I'd seen all of Pink Floyd live. I saw The Granmarstonberries play this a few weeks ago (Steve Rothery from Marillion with original bass player Diz Minnitt) - there's a version on youtube , can't match Mr Gilmour , but top marks for trying!
LOVE BOWIE but not feeling this version.....

it doesnt work-i can hear what bowie tried to do but its a minor harmony -it needs the lower minor voice to work...cant believe bowie didnt suss it before...i fuckin luv gilmour, fuckin luv bowie , fuckin luv this song.but this version aint right.....fuck it should be the best ever......shoulda done it in the late 70's.....peace

Sorry David Bowie but you sort of ruined the vocals. It's supposed to be low not high. But I still love you Bowie

@7038675309 Lol I believe Gilmour asked Bowie to change it so he didn't ruin anything. I love this version soo much!

Bowie is otherworldly - this is a great combo. The song still gives me chills and always will. Gillmour on guitar is a gift to us all.
