I'm guessing maybe because Switchblade Sam wasn't ready to leave the town on the midnight train so he was unable to keep a hostage with him in front of millions of people while stealing thing. (Of course, if he did manage to take Dennis on the midnight train with him, he would be unable to steal in front of Dennis).
