Notice that Arlene '' we of the theatre'' Francis gives Stevens a begrudging handshake at the end. She always puts on superior airs when movie folk are on the show; in her arrogant condescending New York way. Could this attitude have anything to do with the fact that her own shot at Hollywood stardom in the early 1930s was a dismal disaster? Hmmmmm could be!
Anyone else notice that GIANT, which George Stevens was about to release, was James Dean's last movie and this episode aired on September 30, 1956, exactly 1 year to the day after James Dean died?
One of the things I like most about this video is the host is speaking intelligently and very articulately. Most game show hosts nowadays come across as illiterate buffoons.
@GoblinGirl That's because today, the majority of the listening audiance ARE illiterate buffoons, and don't understand intellgence and articulation. :)
Interestingly, this appeared on TV exactly one year after James Dean, one of the stars of Giant, was killed in an automobile accident in central California.
For once I could make out what one of the panelists was saying as the guest left, Dorothy Killgallen said "I'm looking forward to it" to which he replied "Thank you" By the way, G Stevens in being over-anxious to leave did what may of the guests on this show did, don't know why they were in such a hurry to escape.
Stevens won the Oscar for best director the year I was born. In the 1950s, he achieved as close to an American national epic style of film making -- from A Place in the Sun to Shane to Giant to The diary of ann frank
Thanks very much for this great clip, DickFaulkner. George Stevens is one of my very favourite film directors. However, I didn't expect him to be so shy. It's as if he couldn't wait to get out of there. Daly had to almost physically restrain him to hang around for just a few moments. Indeed, his whole demeanor seemed to be very retiring - a very unusual trait for a film director.
I want to see more of James Mason!

Do you have the rest that James Mason was on, either as a guest panelist or as a mystery guest? I just love to see his TV appearances.

Arlene really has it at "producer" - since this is NOT a mystery guest, identifying the line, not the game is the goal.

You're not the only one, souliereinvestments. I was born the year "Giant" came out. Mr. Stevens won the Best Director for it the following year.

@Fenhalls Yes I noticed he didn't want to stay around and chat. I'm wondering if he's hiding something???
