A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said, " Take the kids and get out of house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The " clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand. Sorry I'm afraid to die
I'm not at all a fan of Roddick. But to be fair, Roddick is 2-1 against Sampras on the actual tour, where it counted. And not even the biggest Sampras fan would think that a retired Sampras could beat a top 10 player in a real ATP tournament.
Thing is, while I wont begin to make predictions about what Sampras might be still able to do, there is another difference between playing on tour and playing exhibitions. Often, its the stress of the tournament and maintaining consistency over many consecutive matches thats the problem. Some of the matches I have seen Edberg play in his 40s looked better than what I saw him do in his last year on tour.
Again, not making claims, just adding this one other factor.
Love the chip/slice backhands that Federer and Sampras have and the way they use that to great effect! You can clearly see how easily (seemingly), Sampras blocks Roddick's serve.
lol when at first glance i saw it like one service box was grass and the other was hard and than past the survice it was clay. now THAT would be a battle of the surfaces!
@Siphodias92 The court is horrible? Just because it has different colors doesn't make it horrible. It's made by deco turf. The same surface as the US Open for many years. And to be honest, I think the colors are kinda cool.
That's not Sampras, it's Federer! At the end, the empire begins to say game Feder then it's cut off. Also, you get one quick flash of a head band - Sampras doesn't wear them usually.
thats proably tru cuz i got a friend who watched roddick live and said the samething cuz he didnt even see the ball go pass the net cord and he was rite there
.seriously..that court gives me headaches....I can't say the idea's not original (though quite weird), but it's a good thing they don't start to put these in atp tournaments...lol
Pete is (and always will be) one of the all time greats. More aggressiveness for Andy is right but I don't know about Andy coming to net more. His net coverage is even worse than his groundstrokes I think. He needs to get back to serving huge all the time, right in the corners- no more averaging 120-something mph, and he has to take a real crack at the forehand and go for winners- he can't do long rallies with the best guys or he'll die a slow but inevitable death.
@howardoh you are absolutely right. we´re un 2011 now, and roddick is fading away with silly groundstrokes and slices in the middle of the court. He´s big serve + ferociuos forehand should have been his style of game during his career, nothing else...not trying to improve his backhand, losing weight, coming to net and all those tryings of his bad coaches.
World team tennis, its to make it more interesting.
I think if roddick had stuck with gilbert as his coach when he was coming to net more and being more aggressive, he definatley woulda been tougher to beat, but when he stays back u jst gotta get his serve back in the court and then u can take control, thats why he lost this match pretty easily
I laughed at this statement because of how funny it is.
Did you know Roddick has a 2-1 winning record over Pete Sampras on the ATP? No this isn't counting some exhibitions or any of that, they were 3 actual ATP matches. Roddick defeated Sampras @ Miami 2001 in straight sets and he defeated Sampras on clay @ Houston in straight sets. L-O-L
Sampras may have been out of his physical prime years, but mentally and tactically he was still as good very solid enough to win a Slam... Honestly I think it is a fair trade off when looking at older players compared to young players entering the circuit when neither of them are in their prime. The older players have experience and usually a good mental game while the young players possess a youthful physical game, which is why you see older players defeat young players many times.
I think tennis is undoubtedly a young person's sport. As you get older your footspeed gets slower and it becomes more difficult to recover in-between matches. Having more experience when you're older is helpful but this is mitigated significantly by coaching.
The vast majority of slams have been won by players under 30, and a significant majority of those have been won by players under 25.
Also what I forgot to say was that the physical decline that comes with age often forces you to change the way that you would ideally like to play. Both Sampras and Agassi changed their style of play as they got older (S&Ver and grinder respectively). Even if you are 'wiser' your body just won't allow you to utilise your experience to the full.
but it also depend´s on how much you have worked on your fitness throught your career and how you manage your playing schedule as well, in order to avoid injuries and physical burnout..that´s why federer is still going strong, he takes good care of himself in that sense.
