This is news to me, but apparently "marriage" has religious connotations while "civil union" has legal connotations. I think that what Barack is doing by using the term "civil unions" is stating that he won't force all churches to perform same-sex marriages but that same-sex marriages will have all the same legal implications as heterosexual marriages. So, even though the language is stupid, I think it will still do what needs to get done; equal rights for everyone in the eyes of the law.

What needs to be done is not to make gays and lesbians able to marry, but make hetero couples enter into civil unions according to the state. Then you leave the religious marriage up to the churches.
