First time I heard the intro, that repetitive piano motto reminded me of Steely Dan's "Rikki". But from the intro to the end its obvious -there's no doubt- that both songs doesn't match again at anytime. What's I find amazing it's that even today, having listened to the original till point of saciety, my mind anticipate and reproduce first Fagen word lines. Am I the only one who noticed that arguably "borrowing"? Nice rendition, have to say ;o)
Takes me to the beach, Hermosa Beach, CA. in 1970, those were the nights. The music was cool and the boys were hot, the skinny dippin was sublime. Like Nights in Tunisa.
i have to learn this solo for jazz band. Holy crap this is gunna take a while. Its insane just looking at the paper for it! And ontop of that i am in the middle of Bumble Boogie for Piano, so i am preety much full on music. Thats probably why im getting a c in math lol
@hovercat26 - Just relax and let it rip. My middle son learned this song for his school jazz band and after a very short amount of practices, this song was in his blood. You will do just fine.
Most people are mentioning Steely Dan, but Stevie Wonder took a lot more from this song for his own, "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", than the Dan did for "Rikki". I don't quibble, though, all three songs are tasty.
The introductory riff in "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" is a direct nod to Horace Silver. Why did Picasso say "Good artists copy but great artists steal"?
He meant that every artist is influenced by what has been done before their time. If not by direct exposure, the information the artist is exposed to through other people, media, etc influences them.We are a product of our times and have the benefit of those who have walked similar paths we are now on. Remember-don't feed the trolls.
@levinethemachine Yeah, actually Steely Dan has been known to start playing Song For My Father halfway through Rikki - they're not only not trying to hide it, they got permission and paid royalties. They did it the right way, and I respect them for it, just like they respected Silver. Just like the Beach Boys asked permission and cut in royalties on their borrowings.
One of my favorite tunes from Horace Silver!! And Joe Henderson on tenor layin it down!! This tunes got it all, bass lines, good head, swingin tempo and a nice progression which is perfect for rippin it up on!! Awesome tune, love to play this with big bands and smaller quartets!! By the way if you guys like this tune, check out my youtube channel where I cover this on sax!! Also be sure to check out my other music on there and subscribe please!!!! Thank you Horace Silver!!!
This is perfection. Sorry Steely Dan fans - yes they "borrowed" the opening bass line from this but this is 100 times better than anything Steely Dan ever did even on their best day.
For EVERYONE that says this sounds like "Riki Dont Lose That # " Yes you are CORRECT!!! Steely DAn RIPPED it off. Every artist is a magpie and a thief.
Steely Dan = great band (the majority of dumb americans wouldve never picked up on this.) Horace Silver = Genius.
Joe Henderson is on the sax btw... most you may know that, but some were just shoutin out Horace, which of course is necessary, but let's not forget Henderson rippin it!
@Berserkedy Of course, if you mean just visually, you'll get no argument from me. "Cheesy" is the only apt description for any band that features the yamaha kx-5 as Chick does! LOL Here Chick makes it cool. though:
watch?v=p4IMMaF7nPI
....nah, I can't even go with "cheesy" there. Chick actually makes it just straight cool in that performance.
Horace was known as a "teacher". A few years spent with him was equal to any music school in the netion today. the man had an ear that could pick out the one wrong note in a song and tell you which note, what it should have been, which bar, etc. Amazing. Saw him once live and was honored to shake his hand afterwards. Grip like a vise.
Love this man's work with his band. Actually, regarding Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder, in the post-modern age the correct term is appropriation or homage (which I prefer in this case considering the overall aesthetic sensibilities and true appreciation of midcentury jazz of both Mr. Wonder and the Dan), NOT THEFT. Art has many parallels to science in that, to quote Sir Issac Newton, "“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants".
and did not steely dan brazenly lift keith jarrett's "as long as your living yours" from the "Belonging" album and paste it into the theme of tune on their "Aja"?
and did not steely dan brazenly lift keith jarrett's "as long as your living yours" from the "Belonging" album and paste it into the theme of tune on dan's"Aja"?
Stely Dan didn't imitate - THEY STOLE & TWICE, later as FM. Poor George Harrison gets dragged to court by for using a riff from a song that was taken from an old 15 century public domain gosple tune. No justice
Everything works here. Nothing flashy, nothing extra, just pure musical architecture. Joe Henderson was one of the most underrated horn players, and a big part of the Blue Note sound.
In jazz, about a player's age and our age It is wonderful without the hierarchical order, and all the contents do not feel a difference with regards to an age new hardly in the limitation which the scene reflected in my eyes through a network the historical backdrop and today hears that the flowing performance which is developed at hand is.

it so sad to me that the kids of today (me being 13) are not exposed to something as good as this and if they are they call it crap or weird then go listen some crap pop music. why cant the pop music of today be as good as it used to be? like the Beatles or others
@alt358 you do realize that how good any type of music and its quality is all up to you right? because all forms of music are just expressions. no type of pop music is bad
@alt358 -Umm, I know a 14 year-old (in 2010) who has this song down like nobody's business. He, along with his father, a trumpeter, and his grandfather, a drummer come to my Sunday jam sessions. The grandfather had a band in 1951 that included Red Rodney!
@alt358 - My point is - research and learn to play this music - Learn its history, it's artists it's musical theory and then when you've put that together, make some NEW statements like some of your contemporaries are starting to do.
