  • MADLIB brought me here and I'm sooooo glad that i came. Expanding my musical appreciation and knowledgebase with every note...

  • First time I heard the intro, that repetitive piano motto reminded me of Steely Dan's "Rikki". But from the intro to the end its obvious -there's no doubt- that both songs doesn't match again at anytime. What's I find amazing it's that even today, having listened to the original till point of saciety, my mind anticipate and reproduce first Fagen word lines. Am I the only one who noticed that arguably "borrowing"? Nice rendition, have to say ;o)

  • only 200k views??? give me a break... this deserves so much more

  • 4:21 onwards is JIIIIIIIZZZZZZ

  • playing this song in jazz band. oh ya

  • always good..

  • I played this when I was in highschool, good times!

  • Sounds like beautiful elevator music

  • Ahh...This is some real music, I'm feeling so relaxed now.

  • good

  • My brother introduced me to Jazz thru HS Quintet.....I was hooked forever!

  • Takes me to the beach, Hermosa Beach, CA. in 1970, those were the nights. The music was cool and the boys were hot, the skinny dippin was sublime. Like Nights in Tunisa.

  • Beautiful! Takes me back to childhood!

  • us3 used this for Eleven Long Years

  • tune

  • Je joue ce morceau au saxo alto, j'aime bien.

  • i have to learn this solo for jazz band. Holy crap this is gunna take a while. Its insane just looking at the paper for it! And ontop of that i am in the middle of Bumble Boogie for Piano, so i am preety much full on music. Thats probably why im getting a c in math lol

  • @hovercat26 - Just relax and let it rip. My middle son learned this song for his school jazz band and after a very short amount of practices, this song was in his blood. You will do just fine.

  • Joe Henderson solo on this song is pure magic

  • groooove

  • very nice tune !!

  • Most people are mentioning Steely Dan, but Stevie Wonder took a lot more from this song for his own, "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", than the Dan did for "Rikki". I don't quibble, though, all three songs are tasty.

  • great song

  • I wish Horace Silver was my son...

  • what happened to the oneliners on youtube?

  • The introductory riff in "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" is a direct nod to Horace Silver. Why did Picasso say "Good artists copy but great artists steal"?

He meant that every artist is influenced by what has been done before their time. If not by direct exposure, the information the artist is exposed to through other people, media, etc influences them.We are a product of our times and have the benefit of those who have walked similar paths we are now on. Remember-don't feed the trolls.

  • @levinethemachine Yeah, actually Steely Dan has been known to start playing Song For My Father halfway through Rikki - they're not only not trying to hide it, they got permission and paid royalties. They did it the right way, and I respect them for it, just like they respected Silver. Just like the Beach Boys asked permission and cut in royalties on their borrowings.

  • One of my favorite tunes from Horace Silver!! And Joe Henderson on tenor layin it down!! This tunes got it all, bass lines, good head, swingin tempo and a nice progression which is perfect for rippin it up on!! Awesome tune, love to play this with big bands and smaller quartets!! By the way if you guys like this tune, check out my youtube channel where I cover this on sax!! Also be sure to check out my other music on there and subscribe please!!!! Thank you Horace Silver!!!

  • RIKKI don't lose that number....

  • This is perfection. Sorry Steely Dan fans - yes they "borrowed" the opening bass line from this but this is 100 times better than anything Steely Dan ever did even on their best day.

  • I saw Horace's Sextet at Yoshi's in '86. One of the most memorable concerts in my life.

  • this sounds like something that would be on a 60's television show.

  • For EVERYONE that says this sounds like "Riki Dont Lose That # " Yes you are CORRECT!!! Steely DAn RIPPED it off. Every artist is a magpie and a thief.

Steely Dan = great band (the majority of dumb americans wouldve never picked up on this.) Horace Silver = Genius.

  • @JProhask1 Of course, they obviously were aware of his work and liked it, so it is probably more homage than ripoff.

  • This sounds like Steely Dan's Rikki don't lose that number

  • @upstart555 or the other way around ;) read the description for more info

  • Saw Horace at the Blue Note in NYC in the 80's sublime!

  • Adore button required!!!!

  • Joe Henderson is on the sax btw... most you may know that, but some were just shoutin out Horace, which of course is necessary, but let's not forget Henderson rippin it!

  • I named my band after this song. We're doing a rock version of it for the closing track of our first album.

  • THIS CAT CAN REALLLLYYYYYYYY BLOW A HORN!!!! THANKS HORACE! AND PLAY A MEAAANNN PIANO!

  • THIS CAT CAN REALLLLYYYYYYYY BLOW A HORN!!!! THANKS HORACE!

  • this song brings back memories of my dad jammin his music when I was a teen. Happy growing up times.

  • <3 this awesome tune. Hearing it makes me smile every single time.

  • You can't understand where the miracle that is Chick Corea came from unless you know your Horace Silver.

  • @happystance9able oh my god chick corea is the best and most cheesiest band i love it

  • @Berserkedy I don't know, bud. When I listen to this:

    watch?v=1bWW7XRA410

The last thing that comes to mind is "cheesy", but it's all a matter of taste.

    Peace!

  • @Berserkedy Of course, if you mean just visually, you'll get no argument from me. "Cheesy" is the only apt description for any band that features the yamaha kx-5 as Chick does! LOL Here Chick makes it cool. though:

    watch?v=p4IMMaF7nPI

....nah, I can't even go with "cheesy" there. Chick actually makes it just straight cool in that performance.

  • @Berserkedy You got me browsing around and I found one I hadn't seen before:

    watch?v=oKqn6Bpv8Q4

    HOT!

  • スティーリーダンが"リキの電話番号"でパクッた、ホレス・シルバーの超当たり曲、シスター・セディー、セニョール・ブルース、ファンキーシルバー! #jazzm

  • eargasm

  • That Sax Solo Gives me Boner Everytime i listen to it.

  • Great tune.

3:55 - 5:40 epic sax solo from Joe Henderson imho, what a build up and climax!

  • I completely lose my mind when Carmell starts playing his trumpet. Words cannot describe the beauty of this song..

  • please rikki don't lose that number!

  • Horace was known as a "teacher". A few years spent with him was equal to any music school in the netion today. the man had an ear that could pick out the one wrong note in a song and tell you which note, what it should have been, which bar, etc. Amazing. Saw him once live and was honored to shake his hand afterwards. Grip like a vise.

  • Love this man's work with his band. Actually, regarding Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder, in the post-modern age the correct term is appropriation or homage (which I prefer in this case considering the overall aesthetic sensibilities and true appreciation of midcentury jazz of both Mr. Wonder and the Dan), NOT THEFT. Art has many parallels to science in that, to quote Sir Issac Newton, "“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants".

  • @therav2222 Or to quote Picasso, "Good artists borrow, great artists steal."

  • @milothefultz tht's t.s.eliot quote

  • @ivana7981 I think Eliot said--I'm not looking it up--"Bad artists imitate; good artists steal."

    O O O that Shakes-pe-herian rag...

  • Solo begins at 1:40 (Easy link to learn it)

  • what a great piece. he must of liked his dad.nice one son.fantabulous!!!!

  • and did not steely dan brazenly lift keith jarrett's "as long as your living yours" from the "Belonging" album and paste it into the theme of tune on their "Aja"?

  • and did not steely dan brazenly lift keith jarrett's "as long as your living yours" from the "Belonging" album and paste it into the theme of tune on dan's"Aja"?

  • Stely Dan didn't imitate - THEY STOLE & TWICE, later as FM. Poor George Harrison gets dragged to court by for using a riff from a song that was taken from an old 15 century public domain gosple tune. No justice

  • 2 people dont have songs for their father.

  • @ironman1357 I know what you mean, I am very curious what they "disliked".

  • anyone notice the "witch hunt" quote?

  • You have to be a real complete musician to play jazz. It is the zenith of the art of musicianship.

  • @mumbleora Right. And electronic music is the last bastion of musical weakness :D

  • the tempo is about 130

  • The original, and still the greatest version of Horace's tune.

  • BUENIISIIIMOOOO JAJAJAJA i just laugh at the saxophone solo ^^!!!

  • How can you not love and appreciate this song? A tribute to my late Father! Oh how I wish I could play the piano, damn!

  • Such a great, indelible tune -- and as further evidence, a piano solo that sounds easy and kind of ISN'T.

  • Quintessential Joe Henderson solo

  • ah man those solos were great

  • Love!

  • what can i say ? a total classic of beautiful music from the heart!

  • nice melodies thoughout. even non jazz people can stay with this. genius.

  • Thank you, rovingeye, for the deeper informations!

  • <3 <3 <3 !!!

  • Everything works here. Nothing flashy, nothing extra, just pure musical architecture. Joe Henderson was one of the most underrated horn players, and a big part of the Blue Note sound.

  • asdf this is so amazing. <3

I love this song. it's so peaceful...

  • Nice!

  • i wish someone would upload (The african queen)

  • Perhaps a perfect song. The horn chord at the end of the progression is . . .perfect.

  • Lovely!!

  • Thanks for this !!! In the middle of what we heard everywhere by force, this is real music coming from a truly artist

  • definitivamente una de las mejores piezas del jazz que he escuchado!! horace silver, excelente pianista funky.

  • simply wonderful

  • In jazz, about a player's age and our age It is wonderful without the hierarchical order, and all the contents do not feel a difference with regards to an age new hardly in the limitation which the scene reflected in my eyes through a network the historical backdrop and today hears that the flowing performance which is developed at hand is.

  • Revolutionary at the time....Sidewinder came out bout the same time too. Great stuff!

  • Joe Henderson's solo is fantastic !!!!...

  • i have liked, no loved this song all of life. since i heard it on the radio. WJZZ. i cribbed the title for an EP of mine. i miss what radio used to be.

    it is gone forever now.

  • Amen.

  • From 5.46: I think the great Stevie Wonder may have dipped into this to add to his song Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing as well as Steely Dan borrowing the start for Vicky Don't Loose That Number. Influential guy that I've never heard of till now!

  • it so sad to me that the kids of today (me being 13) are not exposed to something as good as this and if they are they call it crap or weird then go listen some crap pop music. why cant the pop music of today be as good as it used to be? like the Beatles or others

  • @alt358 you do realize that how good any type of music and its quality is all up to you right? because all forms of music are just expressions. no type of pop music is bad

  • @alt358 -Umm, I know a 14 year-old (in 2010) who has this song down like nobody's business. He, along with his father, a trumpeter, and his grandfather, a drummer come to my Sunday jam sessions. The grandfather had a band in 1951 that included Red Rodney!

  • @alt358 - My point is - research and learn to play this music - Learn its history, it's artists it's musical theory and then when you've put that together, make some NEW statements like some of your contemporaries are starting to do. Follow the road less travelled. That will make all the difference.

  • @CRBilly100...one of my fave jazz tunes of all time too...yay youtube...

  • @CR Billy100, One of my favourite jazz tunes of all time too...yay youtube :-)

  • Horace, don't lose that number.

  • @reverendflash dang, you beat me to it!

  • Great piece of music will always live forever.

Lyndon Stephen, St. Lucia, W I

  • great tune. check out the victor wooten version! its FUNKY

  • @Skaliwag66 I didn't even know there was a Wooten version! My night just got incredible.

  • @Skaliwag66 you're right Victor's version is awesome too

  • I remember I had just the worst day ever. I came home and I just didn't wanna leave my room. I then played this song from my laptop and then all of the sudden my crappy day didn't seem that crappy anymore... It goes to show you music is more than just a means of entertainment. Thanks for posting this music.

  • This is one of my favorite jazz tunes of all time. Joe Henderson's genius in improvisation was to tell a story that began slowly and softly, then subtly built energy and excitement with each additional phrase. it is hard to see how he could have done it better. I also enjoyed Silver's solo. Thanks for uploading! Bill Honer Costa Rica

  • ... now turn on your MTV... notice something?

  • Interesting to hear a piece of music know, but had forgotten. I grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, listening to jazz and blues on CKUA, a great public radio station. I'm positive I heard this as a kid on one or more of their jazz shows.

Thanks for posting this. Time to find more of Silver's music.

  • @searcherboy hey fellow albertan! greetings from calgary

ckua's a great station.. one of the few!

  • @blah148 Hey back. I think I got my music education from CKUA - was there anything, any kind of jazz, blues and classical they didn't play?

I'm in Vancouver now, but love Southern Alberta. Calgary's a great town.

    Cheers!!

  • Totally grew up with this. Amazing.

  • Thank you SO much for posting this! Horace is a dear friend and gave me permission to release my oboe instrumental version on MOLIN MUSIC, my own independent label. Been to his home in Malibu a few times and had a couple meals, attended many of the same events. He is REMARKABLE, one of my GREATEST inspirations EVER!

  • w0ah....GREAT....i can't believe it,,, after all these years i never knew the original musician...;-)...like it

says, i only knew the other 2 from it "Steely Dan for their song "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", while the opening horn riff was borrowed by Stevie Wonder for his song "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing"....SOOOOO

cool to find the old school dude who created this, p3ace, rob

  • One of my fathers favorite songs.

    Happy Fathers Day all!

    ~Tiffany~

  • @MarkedBy19 You have such a kind heart...stay you!!!

  • I love this song. It definitely reminds me of my father. Though, he has passed on, I will never forget him.

  • This is one of my favorite jazz pieces from that era. Every time I listen to it, I remember my grandfather who is the reason I LURVE jazz, and art so much. I miss him much but I always have the music and the memories.

  • one of the best songs ever!

  • One of the greatest latin jazz pieces ever. I'm in a band with my friends and we always play this whenever we have gigs.

  • @ShadowKingBeast same unfortunatly we play it a tad slower, and also the rest of my band mates dnt appreatiate what a good song it is, so we dnt play as much anymore which is a great shame.

  • gran composición.

  • How bout some Count Basie

  • The song takes 1:30 and before the tenor comes in almost four minutes have gone by. I deeply admired Silver when he played with Blakey, and with Miles and Rollins, but later the adventure went out of his playing, and IMO he gave his tunes too much attention. Why can't we hear the neglected Carmell Jones in this song?

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

I disagree... he was never a fabulous improviser compared to the legends of his era. He was much more respected as a composer, so it's most fitting that he focus on his composition skills. Don't get me wrong, his solos are ALWAYS in the pocket & harmonically/sonically impressive (block chords, rhythm & space), but his footprint is deepest as a songwriter & bandleader.

  • Thank you. This bossa says it well.

    Dad=ultimate cool forever!

  • My dad=ultimate cool forever!

  • One of my all time favorites! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as evidenced by two great acts, Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder!

  • @iluvpepi

    Yeah, u know what's up ;-)

    Cheers!!!

  • @dSOOCH Thanks! Peace!!!!

  • @iluvpepi Yeah, the Dan is absolutely amazing and Rikki pays great homage to such a hit.

  • @StephenNTrotta:

    Agreed! Take care!

  • For Fathers everywhere, "That was my dad...the man!"

  • oh yeahh!!!
