It Sounds to me like Aresenio was trying to jam quite a few questions into one short amount of time, as a way to learn a lot about Stevie for multiple audiences. Stevie is an exceptional person and very humble, so i could imagine responding to that and still trying to get down to business and keep the various audiences of Aresenio's interested on top of that would be a task. Both of them seem genuine however so what's the point of any discrimination, this was good publicity for SRV and Blues!

@webgeek6 Dude It was f*cking great back in the early '80s when you could go to a old school blues club like Mother Blues in Dallas & sit way up close & watch them play . Hell you could go over & talk to them like they was regular folks during breaks . Or after they finished playing buy them a round or two & talk till the club closed up at 2AM !! My friend it was Spiritual Experience !! I only had a inkling of how lucky I was back then. A getting old guys memories .
@bigdubbatoo nice comment and it was the same in Sydney mate, now there pulled down or refurbished with all the modern shiny new shit so they can charge you up the ass to get in??it just drove all the blue,s minded people away to other simpler venue,s and that was a shame because the few original blue,s joints were old A class buildings with history and style and a great story to tell as well.it seems nothing is sacred these days, just tear it down, replace with new ?? not 4 me man !!
Miss Stevie and miss seeing Arsenio on TV too. He was cool. He shook up late night TV like Stevie shook up the rock/blues guitar world. Very humble guy, smoking hot guitar player. Won't be another like him.
You supposedly keep having issues with Arsenio, but you keep coming back for more. What is it? With all your posts on here, you can't help yourself by commenting more about Arsenio rather than just posting about the good performance from SRV. Or are you one of these clowns who's desperate for attention. Either enjoy the video or stop wasting comment space and get a life.
David Sanborn used to have a music oriented show called "Night Noise" and Stevie Ray and DT were frequent guests...I'd crank it loud when they were on and get creative for my landscape design classes!!
seen alot of players doin all kinds of music and never did any of them play it like srv!!!!! the ease of witch he played and the love the man put into every note was inspiring to all that had the priviledge to hear him lay it down!!!! RIP SRV
Stevie was just a very humble outstanding person...everyone learns from everyone and contributes their own uniqueness to music...just a beautiful guy and what a player, what a loss...Stevie is alive somewhere lookin down on us all.
miss SRV.. he would still be ripping all over these wannabe guitarists today if he were still alive... I was privileged to meet Chris Layton few months ago with the experience Hendrix tour
Kudos to Stevie Ray for not dissing Bowie and the 'Lets Dance' sessions that turned out to be a conflict of personalities..both artists were bigger men for not burning bridges and/or each other.
When my daughter was born the only song that meant so much to me that my love for her was pride n joy every night when she went to bed at night I would hold her in my arms in the rocking chair and put that song on to put her to sleep TY STEVIE MISS YOU RIP
jimi hendrix died then duane allman then s.r.v.....the reason why jimmy page is still alive it's because john bonham slept on jimmy page's bed on the night of his death...the curse went to the wrong guy....
It would be the greatest moment of my life if I got the chance to play and talk with Stevie. Even for as little as 5 mins. Just his story of him becoming this superstar, then getting hooked on drugs until the point of almost dying, and then he was able to get help and get over his drug problem and then right after that...died in a helicopter crash leaving a concert . We lost one of the greatest musicians ever that day. RIP SRV
Stevie kicked ass before he got clean and sober, and then he just got even better afterward. I remember the day he died; that was some damn sad news. RIP Stevie.
You are so right!!! Saw Stevie 5 times. He played great! He played very drunk and not so great. But after he cleaned up. Magical!!! Was there at Alpine Valley at his last show. Glorious weekend concert with all the greats. Woke up the next morning and heard the terrible news on the car radio. What a fucking incredible talent and humble sweet guy!!! Only 34 when he died.
I used to love the Arsenio show and him too! He always had great guest and had questions for them and Arsenio was very genuine. He should get a show again.
okay here is the thing the big difference about music and lyrics back then compared to now. we did not have to shock people with the lyrics or the way they dressed, ( ie, the lack of clothing these days) ( the horrible lyrics, sexual explicit and violent that I do not want my daughter singing) I had to break the news to her that Rhiana sings about whips and chains and what that is all about, my kid is only 11 and she was very embarrassed an not happy with me.
@croy1961 - you weren't really alive in the 80's and early 90's were you? Vanity sang filthy lyrics. Just about everything Prince touched was dirty.(but good music)
Rihana's no dirtier than Vanity or Madonna. Lyrics can't get more violent than some of the gangsta rap and metal back in the day...
either you listened to limited genres/artists or you just weren't alive.
@Obamaturd yea thats why rap is still around and blues is slowly dying. when is the last time a blues song cracked the top 20 on the billboard charts shit face?????????????
@darrylwise1 Sorry, where's your rationale for making the sweeping, unsubstantiated statement that Blues is slowly dying? Perhaps few Blues songs don't crack the Billboard Top 20 but that speaks more of radio playlist policy than anything else. Lang (30yrs old), Shepherd (34 yrs old), Guy, Mayer (33 yrs old), Bonamassa (34), Raitt, Bowskill (19yrs old), Sullivan (12yrs old), Clapton, Beck, Tedeschi, Trucks, Matthews, etc. (every one a millionaire) would beg to differ. Are you sure it's dying?
@themikeaustin Well, dont forget Stevie was a heavy drinker and a drug addict, which damaged them. And for almost all of his young adult life he was pretty much homeless, meaning he couldnt brush his teeth. . . . dont be such a smart ass next time.
i used to watch aresenio all the time. i probably saw this without realising who srv was. it's a fair interview...arsenio's not trying to trap stevie...good questions.
interesting song choice. chappelle says that white people love guitar solos...
i used to watch aresenio all the time. i probably saw this without realising who srv was. it's a fair interview...arsenio's not trying to trap stevie...good questions.
just like the dumb ass arsenio is always trying to find a racist bone in someone white. He need go no further than the mirror to find what he looks for in others. SRV . took them to school
That fuckstick Arsenio shouldn't have even been in the same room breathing the same air as Stevie Ray. Not only a genious musician, but...ALL CLASS. RIP SRV!
The Arsenio Hall Show was unwatchable, which was maddening to me because he would get so many interesting guests that I wanted to see on TV but the man was a total fuck-nut.
You know, we talk about SRV and his playing, but lets not forget THE best band ever assembled to make him great!!! Chris "Whipper" Layton, Tommy "THE Slut" Shannon and Reese Wynans. SRV lives on FOREVER!!!!
"I like all kinds of music, there's room for everything, that gives it room for me too" This guy's soul is even more beautiful than his guitar playing. Saw him in concert once and at the end of the show he said "Take care of each other". Thanks for all that great music.
Leave Arsenio alone. he was actually trying to spread his appeal to a crowd not always receptive to blues music. He did a good job. Problem was Stevie wasn't going to jost knock on the door, & ask to enter, he was going to kick the door in, & make changes. Such a loss, such a legacy.
he didnt avoid anything about rap music. he said he likes it all and that there is room for all. do you not take stevie ray, musician and music lover at his word? As fpr arsenio, what did he do wrong here? seems like he probably exposed stevie ray to lots of peoples that otherwise might not have had a chance to hear him.
Arsenio Hall... Jesus fucking Christ man... you'd be better off just shutin' the fuck up! How in the world this dumbass gets a following is beyond me.
@nocomment747 he wasnt trying to cater to white folks, ya'll have terrible taste in music(except for SRV) dont hate on him because he had his own show, if he sucks then all those white talk show host suck ass even more!!!!!!!!! Leno, Letterman, Obrien, Fergason, Jesus fucking christ i bet they all suck cock on the down low just like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@kevinkmny I agree. I don't mean to be negative but seriously there is not ONE guitarist of the 20-35 year old generation that has a clue. They all spent too much time playing video games I guess.
@MrArtist1971 John Mayer, John Petrucci, John 5, Matt Bellamy, Synester Gates, Jack White, John Frusciante, Mark Tremonti, I can keep going. You may not like their songs, genre, or style, but all of these guitarists are actually quite good.
@AaronBellDeo Thanks Aaron, it's a generational thing. I'm sure everyone criticizing Van Halen in the 70s swore that Les Paul, Johnny Guitar Watson, etc. smoked him. That's the beauty of music.
@MrArtist1971 Arg Im on my brothers account on accident. Im much older then he is :p. I come from the Van Halen generation, but I will give credit where credit is due. Most of their talent is actually covered up by their commercial sound. Matt Bellamy in particular is quite amazing. John mayer, love him or hate him, that boy can play some blues . Give him a fair shake, watch his live stuff.
I did see SRV play once in Dallas, in a way I would say he reinvented the blues. It seemed for 2 hrs god came down to visit us we all sat spellbound, I've never seen any gtrist before or after not just blues gtrist any better or even close. That cld play like him. 3 wks later I saw him at a Thai joint, I was star struck but I got up my nerve and tld him he was the grtest guitar player in the wrld he with Lenny they both laughed then I laughed and he said "thx man".
Damn Stevie was such a class act. You just don't see that anymore. You see fake. You see ignorant. You see douchebags being rewarded for being douchebags. This is why the music industry is failing. It's unfair to compare SRV to Hendrix, Hendrix IS the man but SRV did some pretty amazing things and brought back blues from the dead.
he didnt avoid anything about rap music. he said he likes it all and that there is room for all. do you not take stevie ray, musician and music lover at his word? As fpr arsenio, what did he do wrong here? seems like he probably exposed stevie ray to lots of peoples that otherwise might not have had a chance to hear him.
Ok, here's the truth. If you do enough reading you'll find it. DB told SRV that him and his band would be the opening act, SRV said, "great". When it came time to sign the contract there was a clause that said, "He was not allowed to discuss his own music during any interviews while on tour, or for the duration of the contract". SRV said, "no thanks we'll go record our own album". He finished his obligation on the record, and left the tour to do Texas Flood.
@Vogelsong1 : Supposedly while in rehearsals for the tour (before SRV bowed out), the musical director was very insulting and rude to Stevie b/c he didn't read music.I read in an interview w/ one of Double Trouble ,that SRV & DT were in a bar and the Bowie video for 'Let's Dance' came on & when it got to the part of the guitar solo & showed Bowie playing it, Stevie was pissed the hell off, lol! Who could blame him.RIP,SRV the world just aint the same w/out you
Poor Stevie with those blackened teeth, all those folks from that west Texas caprock area have teeth like that....I've been told by a Lubbock native (where he was from) that whatever's in the water table is the culprit. Never met him, but he just seems like the most personable guy. Probably a guy who could get along with just about everybody. God what a terrible day when he went down. BTW...when was that exactly? I can remember seeing it on the tube, just fuzzy on the date. Thanks Joel
One night someone yelled something form the audiance and Hall said," We don't avoid issues here man", "This aint no Johnny, this aint no Johnny Carson."
Joan Rivers showed up on her show without Carson's permission and lasted 3 days and to this day has never enjoyed the popularity she had.
If you want to laugh, part 3 of 5 Tonight Show 1969 Dean Martin Bob Hope Johnny Carson Judy Carne, geore Gobel.
@musicdude195 well i dont think he thought down on it... especially since he rapped at concerts in his later days. well at least thats what it says in his bio (book, not wiki)
@sledgeguitar No, that's not right. Bowie promised Stevie that Double Trouble could come along and the trio would be the opening act on the tour. When it became obvious that wasn't gonna happen, Stevie chose to stick with his band.
@mnhay27 I read this in the early 80's and it kind of makes sense because of what Bowie's ex-manager did to David in the 70's. Got to say both are just great at what they do or did (in SRV's case). SRV is just another sad story in music history, but those liquid guitar lines will live long after we are gone. Thanks for the response
@sledgeguitar No probs. I agree, both are/were extremely talented - although Bowie has written his share of crap IMHO. Hey, thanks for the kind words on my profile.
@sledgeguitar oh my, oh my, oh my....liquid guitar lines. exactly how i would put it. just like you could drink the music, yeah? dang, right on. my friend, you've got it right. well done.
@sledgeguitar Wow, now that....is interesting. I'm 56, and have been rockin' since I was about 10. But I never remember hearing about that feud. Would you please elaborate? Thanks...Joel in Tucson
srv OWNS that fender. he eats, sleeps and breathes that baby. beaufitul. unfortunately, arsebag douchepants 'arsenio' doesn't get it. dude, get a clue.
@12lfme12 how is Arsenio a douchebag? He was very sincere and respectful? I agree with your last comment as well ( SRV is GOD) but that's just really rude man?
Arsenio, the man who put arse ....into his own name! He went bankrupt not long ago, shame.SRV promoting his best album, tragic that he is no longer with us, no one could play blues like Stevie RIP.
I have never met Arsenio Hall but I always thought I'd like him if I did. He seems really likeable. He seems a lot more down-to-earth and gentleman-ly than Jay Leno.
I only knew of Stevie after he was already gone, but he became one of my many heroes, and my greatest respect still goes out to him and any possible family he might have left today even yet.

You know, we talk about SRV and his playing, but lets not forget THE best band ever assembled to make him great!!! Chris "Whipper" Layton, Tommy "THE Slut" Shannon and Reese Wynans. SRV lives on FOREVER!!!!

Wow...Stevie's not just the best guitarist ever, he's humble and pays respect to his idols.
RIP

"I like all kinds of music, there's room for everything, that gives it room for me too" This guy's soul is even more beautiful than his guitar playing. Saw him in concert once and at the end of the show he said "Take care of each other". Thanks for all that great music.
Bd951 11 months ago 4

@o56kid I'd rather hear SRV drop his guitar on the floor than 99.9% of the guitar playing happening these days...
kevinkmny 11 months ago 46
@kevinkmny alot of the kids nowadays are so fixed on shredding that they forget the true meaning of music that being a expression..
Nardbluzrootz 6 months ago
@kevinkmny haha agreed. Although John Mayer has his style down pat
grimmduder 6 months ago
@kevinkmny I agree. I don't mean to be negative but seriously there is not ONE guitarist of the 20-35 year old generation that has a clue. They all spent too much time playing video games I guess.
MrArtist1971 6 months ago
@MrArtist1971 John Mayer, John Petrucci, John 5, Matt Bellamy, Synester Gates, Jack White, John Frusciante, Mark Tremonti, I can keep going. You may not like their songs, genre, or style, but all of these guitarists are actually quite good.
AaronBellDeo 6 months ago
@AaronBellDeo Thanks Aaron, it's a generational thing. I'm sure everyone criticizing Van Halen in the 70s swore that Les Paul, Johnny Guitar Watson, etc. smoked him. That's the beauty of music.
MrArtist1971 6 months ago
@MrArtist1971 Arg Im on my brothers account on accident. Im much older then he is :p. I come from the Van Halen generation, but I will give credit where credit is due. Most of their talent is actually covered up by their commercial sound. Matt Bellamy in particular is quite amazing. John mayer, love him or hate him, that boy can play some blues . Give him a fair shake, watch his live stuff.

Maybe srv brought blues back from the "dead" for white folks, but its been in the hood all along.......
but I get your point.

Vogelsong1 1 year ago

Thanks Joel

Arsenio's show was short lived,
One night someone yelled something form the audiance and Hall said," We don't avoid issues here man", "This aint no Johnny, this aint no Johnny Carson."

The thing I heard about Bowie/SRV feud was that SRV thought Bowie under paid the help on tour.
sledgeguitar 1 year ago 2
@sledgeguitar No, that's not right. Bowie promised Stevie that Double Trouble could come along and the trio would be the opening act on the tour. When it became obvious that wasn't gonna happen, Stevie chose to stick with his band.
mnhay27 1 year ago
@mnhay27 I read this in the early 80's and it kind of makes sense because of what Bowie's ex-manager did to David in the 70's. Got to say both are just great at what they do or did (in SRV's case). SRV is just another sad story in music history, but those liquid guitar lines will live long after we are gone. Thanks for the response
sledgeguitar 1 year ago
@sledgeguitar No probs. I agree, both are/were extremely talented - although Bowie has written his share of crap IMHO. Hey, thanks for the kind words on my profile.
