For anyone trying to defend Staal here, you are wrong. First off, a dive is an embellishment of a penalty so that the refs will notice it. Dives, almost 100% of the time, are called alongside another penalty.

In this case,Allen would get a 2min penalty for hooking(even though the stick does not touch Eric Staal, putting your stick in the midsection is an automatic penalty) while Eric Staal would get a penalty for diving, because Staal knew he was hooked but fell to the ice purposly, a dive.

This is what happens Staal's right skate gets kicked and it steps into the air then he tries to keep skating but as you can see his skate doesn't hit the ice right and as Staal is trying to push the cat away with his shoulder he is off balance so falls. The penalty shouldn't have been called but it wasn't a dive.

You can call a hook on that play, but the player losing his feet is a result of diving. There was not enough torque from the one handed stick under the arm to cause Staal to fall. Ref should have taken them both. NHL refs do not call enough diving, honestly. If they over-called diving, that kind of crap would never happen.

call it whatever you want...but he did alot of acting in that...and if you notice..its not even a hooking like the call says.... if you watch closely from the top view...staal spins and get caught on the stick..allen even extends his arm all the way forward and switches the stick from his left to his right hand so he DOESNT get called...the dive AND the BS hooking was what angered EVERYONE.. i was there in the lower bowl.. HORRIBLE officiating all night...there was arena wide riot....

Oddly enough, Eric Staal has never been called for diving in his career. Olli Jokinen has been called at least once from what I remember, in a game during the 05-06 season when he dove against the Rangers (I was watching the game). And Belfour is one of the biggest embellishers in the game today. Funny that those two were crying their eyes out the next day.
