thanx for the considered words. i realize that i get carried away when i start defending lanza. i apologize for that. i just feel that the guy got a raw deal and even today, when we praise the likes of andrea bocelli for "bridging the gap between opera and pop audiences, we also need to make sure that we never admit we were wrong about lanza. thank you, again for the discussion. i will do my best to calm down! best regards...
god, it just pisses me off that after that mediocre performance, he opens his arms and puts on that phony smile which says, "ok, you little people, i gave you what you wanted. am i not the greatest?" he had a great voice and he chose to "relax" into his fame in his later years. unacceptable.
@rovingdesertfox i would offer that my comments have nothing to do with "playing god". pavarotti had a wonderful voice. personally, i do not care for the way he acted in his later years and the fact that most people "give him a pass" for it, while continuing to defend a now 60 year-old, baseless criticism of mario lanza for not having a "proper" voice. please listen to lanza's interpretation of "mattinata". pavarotti treats it as a "throw away". more...
@jgraif Mario Lanza had more than a proper voice and would be the envy of any singer. He was extremely gifted and he accomplished great things without trying. You can hear his beautiful interpretations more so in the so-called american songs.I've never heard him utter an ugly tone. His voice was clear clean and beautiful without any noticeable mannerisms,Try his Thine Alone and Student Prince. Some try to categorize him as not being an opera singer.Lanza had one of the best quality of voices ever
@jgraif Cont;Others will say that Lanza is not the(SINGER)that Peerce was, However they never attack Lanza'squality of voice. In short Lanza critics will try to diminish his great voice by categorizing their favorite tenor. My favorites are Lanza, Corelli. Del Monaco& De Stefano&I'm proud of it. If you would like to hear something dynamic,Try Del Monaco's last 5 performances of Mattinata. But i suggest u wear a seat belt. Also try Lauri Volpi which is interesting.I like Pav,but not the hanky&waving
@sugarbist i thank you very, very much for this. i listened to the 1954 studio recording of "mattinata" by del monaco. in a word, it is wonderful. it is also far better than any performance by pavarotti, who sings it like an exercise instead of a piece of music worth his time and effort.
@rovingdesertfox pavarotti regularly praised lanza and cited him as an inspiration. he, of all people, could have really paid tribute to lanza by obtaining the wonderful orchestrations used in his recordings from bmg (victor) and using them in his concerts. instead, he chose to use some really awful arrangements and perform the music like an exercise. this is my opinion. it is based, in part, on formal training in music, but certainly open to challenge and discussion.
@jgraif Fine. You are entitled to your opinion. I have no quarrel with that. Everyone has free will to do with their lives as they choose. It's easy to sit back and copy and paste this over that and compare this to oh, where did it go, that idea, but that's really not how life works, is it? Truth is that Pav got up here and sang the piece and that's that. We tie things together and make a drama out of the threads of existence and call it our life. You seemed to project a lot that's all.
@loveluciano1 first of all, you can listen to whatever you like. this is supposed to be a forum for discussion, not sarcasm. have you actually listened to lanza's performance? if so, i would appreciate hearing your criticism. i'm sorry, but pavarotti does not "win" everything hands down. he is not perfect. like you, i have my own opinions, but i wish to share them with others. don't you dare dismiss me or anyone else just because i do not agree with you.
@loveluciano1 let's discuss. pavarotti was blessed with an incredibly beautiful voice. he cited lanza as an inspiration many times. i would propose that he became complacent in his later years and performed everything like an exercise (especially the "popular" songs); almost completely devoid of any emotion. i find it difficult to accept that from any established artist. this is just my opinion. i also think he could have tried to obtain lanza's arrangements. he could have done a great job.
Bjorling had a more polished technique tho! That's what counts! Look how many successful small voices are coming around nowadays! They have successful and long lasting careers.
@Webarton it is so unfortunate that you feel compelled to credit a swedish tenor with a better performance of this ITALIAN song. i agree that pavarotti's performance is, at best, DULL. lanza performed it so much better but has never been given the proper credit. please listen. best regards...
