could you help me, im trying to record left 4 dead 2 but it won't record the game, just my audio :/

Wow... I've been using voice_loopback for a year now without muting myself. I just tested your method today of muting and unmuting your own mic and it works perfectly. I can't thank you enough for posting this, even though it makes me feel like an idiot for not discovering this tutorial or figuring it out on my own earlier. And here I thought I knew everything there was to know about Source engine demos....

@mastafull Well, glad to be of some assistance; if it makes you feel any better, I also used voice_loopback for like a year without muting myself. Ironically, I got so used to hearing myself repeated that I would rather not mute myself. That, and the muting-yourself thing only works for L4D 1/2 (well, it doesn't work for TF2, I mean!), so it's just not really all that useful. It'd be nice if it worked for all Valve games.

Does voice_loopback work in all source games?

@MMM1Dy Well I know it works in TF2, it works in L4D2, and you can even mute yourself while playing and unmute yourself while recording (so it's like you're not even loopbacked!), and in Portal 2 last I checked it worked.

CSS and other games I've never tried.

@BinarySharp No you can't do all this in TF2, only L4D1 and L4D2. However, one of the commands, cl_voice_filter "playername" does work in TF2, which mutes everyone but "playername"

Yeah, you can mute different people in the demo than you muted while playing the game. Apparently it records the voices of even people you had muted.

Just remute them while watching the demo. If they're muted then, and you use the startmovie command, they're muted in the AVI recording.

For some reason, whenever I use voice_loopback i get a hummig noise in the backround, and I dont think it's cause it being on my headset

@gNatFreak it was the headset, dont know exactly what though, but i did get a new one, so that when me and my friends make vids i dont have a hiss, strange thing is, the one with a hiss cost $100 and was 4 years old, but the new one is 7 years old and cost $30 and is perfect

@LifEMembers Yeah. I.e. no one is muted while playing the game. Then you go back and watch the demo. While watching the demo, you can mute anyone you want, even though they weren't muted while playing the actual game.

Likewise, you can mute anyone while playing. Rewatch the demo, and unmute em. You'll hear them say stuff you never heard them say while playing, because they are unmuted now :P

@BombDestroyer Yeah you can mute and umute different players during demo playback than you muted or unmuted during the actual game.

So this means, beyond muting/unmuting yourself, you could leave a mic spammer unmuted during the game (if you like the music) then mute him late when recording the video. Same if someone talks over the person you want to be able to hear. Too bad I can't do this in TF2, as there's more music mic spammers there.

@gNatFreak No no no not that way, WITHOUT using console.

One of my other Subs "Kilplixism" uses this and it seems better.

@UnDeadSplicerXD Ah, it's much more complicated, and worth it a lot less. Basically, you record .dem files, and you're also recording your mic. Like, for Xfire I can choose to record whatever comes out of my speakers, or whatever goes into my microphone. Then, you have to align the billions of recordings fo you and your mic with the respective demo file. This is assuming, that you can record your mic, as sometimes I get static instead of sound (WinXP seems notorious for doing that).

@iCeCoLdKiLlaful first go in properties on l4d2, then you press "set launch options"

after that you will see a bar you can write in, there you will write "-console"

now when you start l4d2 you will see the console, BUT! your not done yet. Write in the console (this is just and example) "bind ' toggleconsole"

you can replace the key you want to open console with, then when you go in game just press the key (in my case its the ') and there you go :D
