  • @mastablasta231. Thanks...I hate people that put others down but have nothing to offer themselves...nothing for others to challenge or comment upon - just endless negativity. It usually shows that they are empty people who have done nothing and never will Everybody...ignore bizzo142. He just isn't worth anything other than your pity.

  • @bizzo142 ...you're a very angry and judgemental person it seems. Okay...I served in Northern Ireland in 3 tours from 1986 to 1988...and couldn't be with the girl I loved later in life , a Catholic from Derry, because her father was killed by british troops when she was 10 and her family saw her as a traitor for being with me and me as a detested enemy...this song rings very true for me. Good enough for you? What do you except make nasty comments about others.Get over yourself!

  • @jonathandw3 Go 4 it buddy.well said.

  • @jonathandw3 Get the fuck out of Ireland you squaddie fucker!, you derserve nothing you murdering bastard!

  • grande Tony!!!

  • Que tema !!!!!!!!un clasico

  • I think it's only when you get older, then looking back, really appreciate just how good some of the music was in those days (70's and 80's). This is a fantastic song and light years better than anything out there today.

  • I never tire of listening to this music

  • How can people not love this song and the group!! have the original records that my now husband bought 4 me 30yrs ago

  • This single was the first present of my first love. And I still love it. Questo 45 giri fu il primo regalo della mia fidanzata, avevo 13 anni e ancora lo custodisco. Quali sono adesso i regali?

  • The melodic line of this song is absolutely stunning! Tears came to my eyes the very first instant I listened to it, still not knowing what it was about... Great music has this power!...

  • When I see this dude I don't know why, but I see Keanu Reeves! XD Great song though!

  • hermoso.........lo disfruto cada vez q lo escucho....

  • at this moment there are 72 noobs

  • Every good music talk about politcs problems try to listen Bob Marley and enjoy what the life is..

  • Why can't people just ENJOY the music and STFU about politics and crap? Jeez!

  • I'm not Spandau Ballets greatest ever fan, but I would have to admit this song is a true classic. Really beautiful.

  • Simply a great song. Saw them live two years ago. As someone once said in a sporting context 'Form is temporary. Class is permanent'.

  • @gdfsa2866 You really are full of shit. You're private message "like throwing stones unto a wall", that just says it all. You are a complete tosser. Who in this world says shit, such as "throwing stones unto a wall "....."unto ". lol lol. You spout a load of crap, and cannot explain the meaning of your drivel . A parrot acts in a similar manner. Says things it hears , but hasn't a fucking clue what it means.

  • Amazing!!

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs in the world !!

  • I remember this...

  • ℓσνє ιт ... ℓσνє ιт ... נυѕт ℓσνє ιт...

  • The Best song of Spandau Ballet

  • Awesome Ballad,this s music !

  • Those were the days.. I was 16 when this was on the jukebox and i'd regularly hear it played along with Eric Clapton's 'behind the mask' and Tears for Fears 'Everybody Wants to rule the world'... they were great times and i'm so sad that i lost contact with so many friends :(

  • This is how was music before NWO and satanism came in mtv pop of today as Lady Gaga

  • hermoso tema....!!! eterno tema de Spandau!

  • Beautiful guitar track and Tony Hadley's voice is always exquisite and pitch-perfect.

  • One of the favorite songs, i love it!!

  • Que buen temaaaaa !!!!!

  • The song finds its relevance as long as there are children orphaned and left crying beside lifeless bodies of their parents in hovels of militarized zones. When families are torn apart when husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers are called to war. When love cannot flourish because there are two opposing forces on each side and in between is a barricade.

A terrible beauty made indeed, when love is made on a wasteland and "through the barricades".

  • @gfdsa2866 It's just a song. You just made it less of a song, attaching all that garbage to it. If you want to be a poet, do it on the appropriate pages.

  • @bizzo142 songs are poetry specially songs that are sang from real experiences and from the heart and this wonderful song is one example.the composer got the inspiration from the very ugly face of war.

  • @gfdsa2866; very touching point.a song about us who were caught in the obscenities of war.

  • @tinyfeet32 I couldn't thank you enough, Tinyfeet. I somehow sense where you are coming from, which is not very different from mine as well as some those who have left 'their mark' on this page. In this day and age, it's an honor to come across a few, like you, who has depth, who responds to adversities with 'gentle courage'. And may there be more people of like minds, with tolerance and understanding.

  • @gfdsa2866 "Depth"," gentle courage." Just what are you smoking, pal. I've never heard so much crap in my life. Stop turning a simple song into a cause. You bloody poets get right up my nose. "it's an honour to come across a few like you ". What a crock of shit. Why is it an honour to communicate with a fellow blogger. Explain your pretentious clap trap, or zip up.

  • @gfdsa2866 Hello gfdsa2866,

Thank you for your uplifting message.Your message on youtube about the song

has touched a soft spot in my heart from the cause that I fought some years

back. you are a breath of fresh air yourself and glad to know there's

somebody like you in this channel where majority are a bunch of b. crap. (i

apologize for the profanity). God bless your gentle heart gfdsa2866! ^^

  • @tinyfeet32 Ha ha , just realised. You're a yank, a warmonger. You're country goes to war , just to keep the medal makers in business. You invade countries and call it a war !!! Warmongers, every one of you. Then you try and dilute the fact , by writing such poetic crap, or bull crap as you lot call it.

  • @tinyfeet32 Explain "us ". Which war were you in, then ???The last war we were in , was the second world war. Unless you call the invasion of another country, in recent times a "war". Not me. Like i said, which war were you actually involved in, should be interesting.

  • @bizzo142; if you ever did your homework buddy before deciding on attacking the likes of gfdsa2866 and me for posting our opinions about the song, somehow, you'd make at least a little sense and if you're lucky i will even explain "us" and the war i was referring to but why should i even bother explaining to a bigot like you.seems to me that you only signed up on youtube just to slam on well meaning people who happen to have deeper sense of understanding than your pathetic self.

  • @tinyfeet32 And still , you waffle on, all poetic, as if there is some deep meaning. Yes, explain what you mean by "us". Like i said, the only war you've ever seen, is one with John Wayne in it. As for calling me pathetic, you want to read the shite , you and your pal have posted. I've asked you both to explain, but you've decided i'm unworthy of an explanation. Or in other words, you have no explanation, and have been exposed as a pair of fuckin drama queens.

  • @bizzo142 like i've said, you're not worth explaining to.listen, looks like you couldn't find anything better to do but rant and rave here, well,i suggest you take your rants in your street and i hope you find somebody who will smack the shit out of you!

  • @tinyfeet32 Still back peddling , i see. Inferring that you have been to war, then failing to elaborate, as it's too embarrassing to be quizzed on an obvious lie. People like you, little armchair heroes, make me sick. Your next statement will be " well i did go to war, actually " !!! Too late man, you've been found out. Fucking drama queen !! Plain and simple.

PS, i can take a smack, i can fuckin give one too. I don't sit watching others fight and then comment as if i was in the thick of it.

  • @gfdsa2866 what an insight to a sad world ==}} but im sad to say your right ==}}

  • We may have different interpretations of the song. For me, this was an anthem that can sum up my rebel, activist years in college. The lyrics implies the ravages and horrors seen and felt in post-war zones everywhere in the world, even before this song became popular.

  • a true gem, condolenses to glennsurquin.it will get easier;i lost my dad recently it will get easier.bless you pal !

  • I am italian and I tell you that your father will be always with you. I think he must have my age. Love for you young man

  • I seem to be appreciating this band more these days, maybe it's a sign of growing older lol

  • quanti ricordi..............

  • I like the lyrics to this song and heard a more energetic version of it sung by Hadley a year or so back - also the imagery and costumes in this version is a touch too posey. Altho' it is still worth watching on occasion. I do not like Hadley general his politics are very very far from barricade - he's a Tory so I understand. All this not withstanding thank your for providing this opportunity.

  • Thumbs Up If You Like Spandau Ballet More Than Duran Duran.......

  • @GwapingssPortugaliza

i could never get into duran duran

  • @GwapingssPortugaliza THEY AREN'T RIVAL BANDS! DIFFERENT STYLES, AND YOU CAN LIKE BOTH!!! I PREFER DD BUT I ALSO LIKE SOME OF SB SONGS!!!

  • @GwapingssPortugaliza

Tony's voice is loads loads better than Simon's

  • @forestdad

Tony hadley 's got the best voice of Great Britain

  • I'm young, probably younger than all of you here, this song still touched my heart though. It reminds me of lost family and my pet...

  • I think this is probably my fave of all time, not many move mr, this evokes so many emotions

  • an absolutely beautiful song i could listen to this all day they are still a great band

  • god bless dad xxxxxx royal marine

  • This is with out a doubt the best song they ever recorded!!!

  • The beatles wrote such classics, but at the right time, spandau ballet, should be without dought be in the same class, a class act, with loverly songs, loverly singing, great song writing .

  • if ever a song deserved the word 'epic', this is most definately it..

  • Comment removed

  • when i hear the radio now if they play a Spandau song its either True or Gold its never this, this song is so overlooked and it shouldn't be, its the best song the band have ever made

  • it was made because of the troubles in ireland and the love of a catholic girl and prody body

  • Who dropped all that paper?

  • R.I.P

  • que buen tema , melodia pura

  • que buen lento!!!....

  • 70 ignorants

  • One of the very best songs from the awesome 80's.

  • His voice is breathtaking, and is even better now.

  • The 80s were a turbulent time politically, and, unlike today, it was expected that most performers, no matter how commercial or popular, would have at least one serious song that addressed politics even in the most general of terms. It's a pity that since the 80s popular music has become so dumbed down and superficial, as the times we live in today are even more turbulent and divisive - but performers today obviously feel no responsibility for waking up their young audience to this fact.

  • @meg4525 I see what your gettin at, maybe the reason why performers dont mention it now are afraid of being branded unsuitable role models by the media. but alot artist and performers from the alternative scene (rock and metal) are more ballsy when it comes to adressing these issues.

  • LOL i read Sergio Mendes as Artist... XP

  • I can feel how my parents have struggled throughout their lives nurturing their children with love. Just like the sun that shines from dawn to dusk, hopes nothing in return :)

  • hope i never have to play this song but if i live longer than my dad i know i will...not yet dad....not yet...love you...xxx

  • I have read most of your comments about N. Ireland and Belfast and still don't understand what Polish notes are doing in the wallet with a photo of a young boy (one of the first scenes in this clip) ?

I think this song has greater meaning than just "Irish barricades"

  • @stanstarzynski Neither do I...;-)

  • Brilliant song...brilliant voice...awesome band. Went to see them at their reformation tour and they were magic. Tony Hadley still has the voice.

  • THIS IS IT! ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN!!!

  • love you tony best voice from the 80's ....and when i see you live a few years ago still amazing id marry you tomorrow yummy yum yum xx

  • sheer CLASS

  • i agree this is the best spandau song , and the best ive seen tony !

  • esto es música!!!

  • THE BEST SPANDAU SONG EVER WITHOUT A DOUBT !

  • @DAVIDPOOLER100 good, but they wish they were duran duran!

  • still haunting, although a lot of Spandau is really really cheesey, this is really really classically beautiful.

  • 71 people crashed against the barricades....

  • capolavoro

  • Let's go back to the 80's......uhhhh, no I rather stay.....there are no blackberries in the 80's.

  • The Spandau's finest hour and Tony Hadley's finest vocals

  • my da asked me 2 play this at his funeral i am dreading when i hear this in the graveyard

  • GOD 1 WISH,TAKE ME BACK T 80S...

  • 71 people don't know the music

  • AGUANTE LA DECADA DEL 80 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love this song . . .

  • this is just too good

  • kidso reilly was a roadie for spandau ballet. the british army shot him dead in belfast. he was naked from the waist up and the brits said he was armed. shot in the back. spandau ballet and bananarama came to his funeral in belfast. this song was made a while after kidsos murder. the soldier who shot kidso was promoted through the ranks of the british army. sure he only shot an irishman.

  • THE GUITAR.

  • @brendasso

Don't forget the voice of Tony Hadley

  • @melendes1966 He is still stunning and even better looking with age.

  • I'm 26 years old this song was played at the funeral of my dad this really made me cry :( R.I.P. dad i miss you so much. This wonderfull music will always make me remember you and it will give me the strength to go on with life. Always in my hart!

  • @GlennSurquin Then you were only 1 0r 2 years old when you lost your father, thats very sad;-(

  • @GlennSurquin Good post sorry for your loss..

  • @GlennSurquin he will be always with you, needed to answer you because my dad left me to and really miss him

  • @GlennSurquin I understand you so much,I'm in the same condition as yours, when I heard this song and specially saw the video after many years, whith all those black&white photos I remember my dad...SB-Great artists who make us feel through the music that we are near the ones which we will always love evan they have passed in Ethernal life...

  • Tony Hadley lead singer of Spandau Ballet on US Tour in 2011; Aug 13 irving plaza new york ny; Aug 14 market days chicago il; aug 16 house of blues west hollywood ca; aug 18 ramona mainstage ramona ca; aug 20 freemont street experience las vegas nv; aug 21 red devil lounge san francisco ca

  • great!!!

  • Just don't understand how people can write that this song is about Ireland, when it clearly is about Poland. 0:50 into the video you can see a Russian clock "Slawa" which was very common in Poland as well as a couple of seconds right after that you see a wallet and there's a Polish Zloty bill that says "Bank Polski". This cleraly shows that it's referring to Poland don't you think? nd it's most probably for the Solidarity Movement in Gdansk, a popular subject in the 80's amongst bands.

  • @MrKermoth What makes the song so exceptional is that it holds true for life in general, not just to one place or time or nation.

  • @Gyrkin59 I agree with you. My comment was to people that think that this is a song that would be infuenced by N. Ireland and just pointed out that if influenced by something it clearly proves that it wouldn't be N. Ireland but Poland if you look at the little hints in the video. But I do agree that i speaks to ones heart and not a certain place or nation.

  • I read an interview once where they stated their discomfort with the video.. how it did not fit the subject matter. Said that it still bothered them.

anyway basta con la nostalgia..nothing left to lose there's everything to go :))

  • such a lovely song ive loved it since i was young!!!

  • @stigo fthedumpz - I would appreciate if you didn't use the term " proddy ".

Protestant or Church of Ireland would be more appropriate, I find the word " proddy " offensive and doesn't help build bridges between these people - Thank you.

  • this made me cry :'(

  • Me and my drama group performed the play that this is based on for our GCSE exam, and we played this at the beginning and the end, and everytime we played it, I couldn't help but cry, the play and the song together is simply beautiful.

  • Tony Hadlet, lead singer of Spandau Ballet comes to US Summer 2011; Aug 13 Irving Plaza New York City NY; Aug 14 Market Days Chicago IL; Aug 16 House Of Blues West Hollywood CA; Aug 18 Ramona Mainstage Ramona CA; Aug 20 Freemont Street Experience Las Vegas NV; Aug 21 Red Devil Lounge West Hollywood CA.

  • @rocmaven seriously THANK YOU for posting this info! Tony's voice is still mindblowingly amazing!

  • ok

  • Good song. The singer looks like Messi, just a couple decimeter taller.

  • why does the artist come up as Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go ???

  • fuck. Me and my ex had this as "our song". We broke up, but this song is always... Well, i think you can guess....

  • If you are fed up with this fucking world, sing this song and realize it can always be worse..... They don't make them like this anymore, not the songs and...not the men like Tony Hadley. Love you forever!

  • Very well said...Tony Hadley still the best!!!

  • canta messi??

  • gracias por esta muy buena musica de nuestra epoca ..

  • love it love it love it, awesome vocal

  • you dont here music like that nowadays, just brill.!!!!!!!

  • This video and song is all about the trouble in Northern Ireland...fantastic song by a fantastic band!!!

  • @meesh202

I think more then just being about Northern Ireland, couldn't this song be about any trouble and strife that affects a number of countries in the world today? At about the one minute mark is the word Polski. I believe that means Poland

  • un bon souvenir des années 80' une mélodie intemporelle sur une interprêtation sublime...

  • 40 yr old here...used to listen to this album in 1986 non-stop...now i can't stop listening to the albums playlist i created...this is not only a great song, but a great album!

  • better than "true"

  • @anditractor but not as good as "gold"

  • great

  • el hombre más elegante de todo el pop de los 80,nadie como tu ,Tony¡¡¡¡

  • one of my favorite songs ever such a shame that true is usually the only spandau song you hear now. song is actually about the conflict in northern ireland in the early 1980s

  • @abrookes1985 yeh buh buh, maw. shush. I know what I meant

  • @devslad Great comment mate. Have some thumbs love

  • great voice...!!!

  • @abrookes1985 bit harsh, and not entirely true, its about war, and they were pretty popular in their time.. which ofc... was not now, so yes they have 'dissapeared' as such.

  • Geez and somehow BOTH my comments are rated top? 'o' I feel special

  • brividi..............

  • Comment removed

  • one of spandau ballet's greatest... which i love the most ;)

  • @abrookes1985 I guess that's the reason why you're on their video......

  • Tästä on paha panna paremmaksi.

  • paradisiaco...

  • The first time I heard this, it sent shivers down my spine. This song is incredible, but I only wish I understood what it was about.

  • @alucardmurderer

its about love prevailing over the troubles in Northern Ireland and the death of a member of the crew in the troubles.

  • @alucardmurderer the song is based upon two lovers in the northern ireland conflict, great song!

  • @lukeee28 Oh, thank you

  • @alucardmurderer i think it's about sacrifice and the choices we make and how we reconcile ourselves with them, and how what hand were dealt in life reflects on what we do as people and the people we do it with.

  • @petesmatty I see! That seems very likely, and thank you

  • @petesmatty hey sorry that sounded a bit heavy.

  • @petesmatty Love knows no bounderys but unfortunatly people do......the song is about true love in northern ireland.....but the two young lovers are from different communitys IE one was catholic one was protestant.....unfortunatly for them there familys dissaproved and tryed to tear them apart.....the barracades in the song where they made love....were the walls which divide the two communitys......Mark Radcliff explained this on radio 2.....

  • @alucardmurderer I know what you mean jejeje its so haunting

  • @Kaatiieeeeeee Yeah

  • @alucardmurderer The shivers probably relate to something you will not find yourself speaking or even thinking because you mustn't even consider it. Welcome to "democratic free speech" and those awkward shivers occasionally that the song gave you.

  • @MarkMuses What doe you mean?

  • @alucardmurderer I suppose sort of like Orwell's 1984. Political 'correctness' , speech codes. Citizens "officially" happy. The News becoming a pantomime of reality. From the song "a terrible beauty we've made". Hey, ask me again in 10 years if you're still allowed to. :D

  • @MarkMuses Ah You have me confused. Im not familiar with any Political things
