When the world runs out of fossil fuels that farmer with the steam engine will be loading up with wood while that guy with the V8 is pulling his trailer by hand! Steam rocks!
Every mechanical engineer can see this isn't fair. The green tractor pulls down the black one by the connecting rod and the black one lifts up the green one, because there is an angle at the connecting rod. If the green one has got some kg more it would pull the old machine so easy.
@crazytrip83 watch a few more steam traction engine vs. modern tractor and you would be surprised. You have to take in account the RPM band on the modern engine, weight of the steamer, and ground conditions. The steamer on the other hand may actually be making more power per stroke. Somewhere on YT there's a video of a steamer on a dyno and it was like 80hp and 3000 torque at 200 rpm.
@crazytrip83 Interesting point..I've always wondered if you could put an African bull Elephant against a full size vintage V8 car like an Olds 98 for example, which would win that tug-o-war. I say the car, my friends think the elephant.
@crazytrip83 not too sure...I agree with the angle on the drawbar, but adhesion is another factor, therefore weight. And you can develop a lot of power in very low speeds on steam engines as well...^^
@grizzleybearz282004 As much as I love steamers, I think a diesel-electric locomotive would win. 1) Diesels have smaller diameter wheels so they act like a higher gear ratio, 2) 100% of a diesel's weight is used for adhesion, whereas only 60%-75% (rough estimate) of a steamer's weight is on its driving wheels, so even though a steam locomotive weighs ALOT more, their adhesive weights are alot closer.
Funniest thing I've seen since a draft horse farmer in Nova Scotia took exception to Yamaha Trimoto advertising its product as being able to out work, out pull and out fun the common work horse.
If you notice the angle the tow strap is between the two tractors, it's obviously not a "fair pull". The more tension on the strap, the more the Deere has weight lifted off the rear tires and the more weight is transferred to the traction engines rear wheels. It would be more telling of the pulling power of each if the hitches were level with each other.

@farmboy460 "It's not a question of where he grips it. It's a simple question of weight ratios. A 5oz. bird could not carry a 1 lb coconut." -Monte Python
Even with your objection to the tow angle, the tractor is 4 wheel drive, so even if the rear wheels were lifted off the ground it would still have the front wheels pulling with the full weight of the tractor on them. Same type of pull was done 35 years ago with a big catapillar & a Steam engine. Let the cat pull him a little while slowly opening the throttle. Came to a standstill, then drug the cat backwards.
@oldSawyer Also as it was show it was a speed demon his gear ratios were all wrong, and he was not using his front wheel asist. Anybody in the steam hobby would also know that this is a show pull because of these things, a steam enthusiast would want to risk breaking there engine.
Tractor pulling in general is all a show, whether it's hot rods or antiques, nobody wants to break anything.
As I said before, the same tug-o-war was done many years ago with a catapillar and a steam engine, and the steam engine still won, dragging the cat around with its tracks spinning ! Catapillars aren't exactly 'Speed Demons'.
The problem with hot rods versus steam, is the hot rod needs Momentum and a gradual load, where the steam can start out with a full load
I may not own a steam engine myself, but I have been around them for 40+ years along with being around hot rod pulling tractors and antique tractor pulls, and top fuel dragsters and two wheel drive hot rod pulling trucks. They each have their own specific catagory they pull or accelerate in, but unless you know and understand Steam Power, you will never fully appreciate what it can do.

I think this is awesome. I would love to see a bigger diesel tractor against the steam tractor to see if there is any difference.
