"Traveling through the Dark" is a great poem and the title of one of Stafford's books. The stanza near the end -- with "I could hear the wilderness listen" -- captures one of those pregnant pauses in life when we need to make an ethical decision. This is not only a poem about ethical decisions; it's about the collision of technology, human, and nature. Read Stafford and ponder!
@DivineGoddess3 well you gotta re-read. the poem basically describe a man who saw a dead doeat the side of the road, and he stepped out of his car to swerve the doe into the river. Then, he found out that there was an infant doe inside it. Thus, he hesitated. But in the end, he just pushed the doe into the river anyway.
I met William at college in Kansas , he influenced my life, . . and I treasure his words but his voice also is a great part of his creativity, . . . I love to play tapes of his words to ease me into sleep, . . .
How wonderful to hear his voice reading this! I am saddened that no one has commented since this was first published over a year ago, but obviously it is part of a larger documentary.
Back in the early to mid nineties I saw a video in a poetry class at Indiana Wesleyan University of him reading his poem "Ask Me." If you find that clip, please post.

Intresrting poem but as I read I didn't understand what the Main Point of the poem was nor what were the underlying messages it may have.
